Need a new phone

My phone has been dropped too many times. It is time for a new phone. I hate to do it because I'm not eligible for a free upgrade yet but my phone is being stupid and my warranty is up. I have an LG now but I'm wanting to switch to either Samsung or iPhone. If you have one of these what are the pros and cons of your phone?

Re: Need a new phone

  • I'm an iPhone girl, I have the 4s. I find it easy to use and have no complaints. Except that you can't charge it with a standard USB cable. That's just annoying.
  • I just switched from a Samsung Galaxy something to an iPhone 5s. I LOVE IT.

  • Dang. I posted on the other thread because I'm stupid, but I have a Samsung Brightside whose only issue (aside from not being a smartphone) is that I don't know where the pictures save except that they go into a black hole.
  • Iphone lover here. I've had the 3Gs, 4s and now the 5s. They are great phones!

  • Another iPhone girl here. I think the 4s??

  • FI and I both have older Blackberries (Bold 9700) because we both have this thing about keyboards. We prefer them to touch screens - FI because he has big 'ol fingers and always screws up on the touch screens and me because I keep my nails really long most of the time and have difficulty getting my fingertips where I want them on a touch screen.

    What carrier do you have?

I used to have a Droid X when I had Verizon, and I loved it. I switched to Sprint a year and a half ago and got an HTC EVO. I think I've finally started loving my EVO more than I liked my Droid. Everyone else I know who has an HTC of some kind really likes it, too.

My partner has an iPhone 4 (no Siri), and he ... doesn't love it. But he doesn't really hate it either. He used to have a Blackberry Storm and it was teeeerrible, so I think he's just happy to have something that works.

Future father-in-law just got the new Galaxy and he looooves it, but it's huge.

  • I have verizon. It is the only carrier here that doesn't have constantly dropped calls.
  • I recommend Nexus 5. It has the best value.

I went from the iPhone 3 to the Samsung Galaxy S4 and I can't wait to go back to Apple. The Samsung phone is nice, but I HATE the keyboard (I had to install a different one because it was just so awful) and it's too big. It doesn't fit in my pocket and it just a general hassle. I also have issues with the Samsung AI - it's definitely not as good as Siri. I'll be switching back as soon as I'm eligible for an upgrade.

  • I have an iPhone 5 and a Galaxy 4. I prefer the iphone but find that it's less flexible. For instance, I have issues synching calendars and notes between my PC, Mac and iPhone that I don't have with the Galaxy. However, I prefer the interface of an iphone for everyday use.

And wow do I sound like a geek....

Another benefit to Android phones: I love Swype for text input.

  • I have had iPhones since the original and still love them.  The Apple store has the best apps; the phone is thin and light; and I've never had an iPhone crap out on me.  I always keep them for two years until it's time for a free upgrade.  Then the old phone is still good for a younger family member or to sell.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • I had an iPhone, and changed to a Samsung Galaxy S4 when DH and I got married (my contract was up, his wasn't, he added me to his plan.)

    I. FREAKING. LOVE. IT.

I have an iPhone 4S for work, and I hate it. I use it because I have to, but I love, love, LOVE my Galaxy S5 (I had to upgrade because I dropped my S4, hard, and dislocated the sim card reader.)

I'm an Android girl, all the way. After the iOS 7 upgrade, none of my google stuff worked on my iPhone.

  • I have an iPhone 4s.  H has a Samsung Galaxy something.  I love iPhones and don't like the Samsung.  He's exactly the opposite.

I find that the Samsung is much more ... clunky than the iPhone.  Like swiping motions or typing are jerkier than on an iPhone. It tends to be a bit more glitchy too. Also, I can't stand huge smartphones, and the iPhone is pretty much the smallest smartphone I've found. It's definitely smaller than H's Samsung.
  • I LOVE my galaxy s4! But Fi has an iPhone 5 whatever the hell is the newest out there, and he will never change.

I like customizing my home screen to widgets and cute colors!

I found a super cute case - it's ivory with a sparkly back - Perfect for wedding planning time!

  • Loved my original Samsung Galaxy and I've only heard good things about the newer ones, but for me it came down to size. I wanted something I could type one-handed on, and all the Galaxy phones were too wide. So I love my iPhone 5. I do really, REALLY miss the Android Swype feature though.

Don't do like my friend did and get a thousand recommendations for Galaxy and iPhone, then get a Razr. She hates it, and has had to get it replaced a few times.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 and I love it.

I think you should probably figure out what OS you like first: iOS or Android. Alot of the complaints mentioned in previous posts are about the OS, not the actual phone. I recommend going to a store and playing with an Apple phone and an Android phone to get an idea of which OS fits you better (as much as I don't like iPhones for myself, they do fit some other people better). Once you know which OS you like better, then you can decide which physical phone to get (ie, a Samsung android vs Google android vs HTC android or iPhone 5 vs 5s vs 5c).

  • I just upgraded to a Droid Maxx on VZW.  It has the best battery life of just about any phone.  I can have the screen on pretty much all day (reading at TK, other websites, or playing games) and get down to about 50% battery life.  My IT manager FI has it too, and he has to talk on it for hours and hours at a time, and he gets down to about 50% after a full work day too.  It has some of the cool features of the Galaxy, but battery life was most important to both of us.  I could charge it every other day if I wanted, even using it heavily.
  • I have the iPhone 5S and I love it. This is my second iPhone.
  • I have a Samsung S4 (work) and Samsung S5 (personal) - I love them both!  They are both very similar phones, the S5 is larger and has more features.  The battery life on both of them is pretty good.

FI has the Samsung S5 (personal) and IPhone 4S (work).  He hates switching between the two because the screen on the Apple is so much smaller.

When I played with his IPhone, to me the screens seemed somewhat cluttered, not sure how else to describe it.  I'm not a fan of how proprietary Apple has been.  With the Samsungs I can use any micro USB charging cable and it will charge my phone.  I'm not sure how friendly Apple is with Amazon, but I'm a huge Amazon fan (for MP3, apps, and just regular shopping); I know traditionally the Amazon AppStore was an Android only thing.

I will say the IPhone Air does look like it'll be a nice phone.

Go to the store, try out any phone that you are thinking about getting and decide.

  • Hmmm... Yeah I think I'm going to have to go to the store and play with the phones. Thanks for all the responses!
  • I'm on my second iPhone, it's a 5, and probably will upgrade to whatever they call the newest one they'll introduce in September or October when I merge into FI's family plan.  I like having the phone mirror my iPad, plus I'm used to the iPhone at this point and I rarely have any problems with it.

  • I have the S4 and love it. I love that I can find chargers everywhere and don't have to change chargers if I upgrade. I love that I can buy a second battery for when we go camping. I love the bigger screen because I regularly email on them. I love the Swype typing.

  • I have an HTC 8X (Windows phone) and LOVE IT! Granted, I used to be a Blackberry girl so switching to a Windows phone *completely* changed my world by bringing me out of the dark ages but still - I love having all my documents accessible and the compatibility with my laptops. :-)

However, if you love Candy Crush, it's not available for the Windows phone. Haha That's seriously one reason FI won't switch to a Windows phone - He needs his Candy Crush *smh*

My phone contract is up in July and then I'm joining FI's plan, and also adding my mom and dad to his plan (it will be much less expensive for them this way).  I am looking at either iPhone or Galaxy S5, though I secretly always miss having a Blackberry because I loved my fuscia curve.

I currently use the Galaxy Nexus and I love it, and FI has a Moto X and it's very similar in size/ features to my phone.  I think I'm going with the Galaxy S5 because of the heart rate monitor on the back and the water resistance.  FI is a total tech nerd and researches every purchase and he said to go with the Galaxy S5 for sure.

  • I just got back from the phone store a few minutes ago. I ended up with the Galaxy s5. After playing with both phones I liked them both and found them easy to figure out. What made up my mind was the Galaxy was on sale. Lol.
