UPDATE: BF and I made it to our apartment after leaving work early. However, by the time we got home, there was a really bad fire that started only a few miles away from our place. We can see the smoke in the sky from our living room, and the news has been on since we got home. We aren't immediately threatened, but definitely keeping an eye on everything. All of the local schools are closed for the rest of the week, and there are 7 other active fires in San Diego County. We are in the middle of all of them. I have also heard that there are fires down in Mexico and up in Orange County, so things are very crazy right now in the area. I am watching the sky and looking to see where this fire is headed. We were able to gather a few more things if we have to evacuate, and are ready to do so on a moment's notice.

We have Santa Anas currently here in SoCal, and there was a brush fire yesterday that burned 1600 acres. No damage was done, and only one person had to be treated for injuries. This fire was located about 30 miles from where BF and I live, and about 10 from where we work. Today, things are much worse. That same fire started up again, and new fires have now erupted within 5 miles of where we live (one to the north and one to the south). There are already evacuations taking place for those fires, but I can't find any other information on them as of yet. I really hope we can go home tonight after work, and that we don't lose everything today. Fortunately I packed up really important documents, some heirlooms, and emergency supplies in the car yesterday and today, but I am still very scared. I know BF and I will be alright since we are both at work, and that's the most important thing in this situation, but I want our expensive table, living room set, and our brand new cookware to be okay. I also rushed out the door because we were late for work and wasn't able to grab a few pieces of my late grandmother's jewelry. I know it's mostly material items, but I have never been in a situation where everything could just be gone in a matter of minutes, and make BF and I homeless.

I can't focus on work today. I am watching the news updates by the minute. I don't even know what will make me feel better about all of this, but thank you for reading and letting me vent.

I'm so sorry that this is happening. I wonder if your work could let people out early to deal with fire preparedness. It's impossible to focus on work in this kind of situation, and your time is better spent doing things that will make you feel safer instead of worrying away at your job :(

  • Sending up lots of prayers for your safety. That must be so scary and unsettling. :( I hope you guys will get to return home and won't be affected.
  • It's all definitely very scary, especially when you can't predict what will happen :(

I live in an area that gets tornadoes (and wild fires on occasion), and all the kudos to you for packing up those important documents, those are the only things you really need. All you can do now is what you're already doing - wait, watch the news, and breathe. And no one at work should be irked with you for being distracted.

  • @phira there were emails sent out that if you need to pick up your kids at the affected schools that are being evacuated, then you can leave. However, BF and I don't have kids, and as much as I would love to be able to go back to grab more things, the fires are in between work and our apartment, with road closures and traffic issues. Unfortunately work is the safest place for us to be right now. However, they will evacuate if the fire closer to our office that started yesterday comes close to us (which is very likely right now too).

Thank you so much for the kind words, from both you and @lalalaurita.

  • @CLoGreenEyes and @Moiramab, thank you. All of the kind words really mean a lot to me.

  • Stay safe!  That sounds pretty terrifying and I think it's definitely okay to be anxious about it (sometimes admitting that is a big deal!)  I hope for your safety and the protection of your material things, but I know you are a strong lady and can and will persevere regardless of the situation.  Keep us posted on any updates as long as you're being safe and have a roof over your head!  Do you have any semi-nearby family you could evacuate to if need be?

    @caseface5 thank you!

@Blue&White thanks, and I will. Unfortunately BF and I only have each other, apart from a few friends whose apartments are also in danger currently from the fires. All of our family members live in Upstate NY. Fortunately we both were paid today, and I think if this fire is still bad around 5-6 pm today we will just get a hotel room downtown, away from the fires. I will keep everyone updated, and I just heard that the one that is nearby our apartment is burning structures already. So there are people who have already lost their homes today, and it only looks like it is getting worse.

  • Sending prayers and good thoughts for both of you! Stay safe

  • Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. The latest update is more bad news. My family in NY heard about it on the news, and the fire destroyed 30+ homes already at least. In addition, there are 2 fires north of the apartment now too, and one seems to be coming closer and closer. BF and I were planning on leaving work within the next 45 minutes to beat the traffic, and I did let my manager know that it was near where I lived. But I am concerned that the new fire moving south might destroy everything before we get there. I promise to keep you all updated, and I am so appreciative of this community right now.

  • @Hummingbird125, BF and I were not evacuated, and the wind should be dying down today. However, if there are any gusts, then things are going to get bad again. We have suitcases that we are putting in the car today. The fire nearby is 0% contained and has already burned 700 acres, but it is moving away from our apartment still. Last night we could see the smoke plume from our living room, but this morning it is all blue sky. At the moment things look better for us, but there are many people in the area who have lost their homes. It was unreal for me seeing another apartment complex that I almost lived in burning on the news last night.

However, there are many people who are calling it arson, since even the fire chief had never seen 9 fires start so close to each other on one day in his 25 year service. If there is someone or a group of people setting these, then it could also get bad again today. I will keep everyone updated.

  • Any news?  Hopefully you're safe and your apartment is still standing.  Keeping you in my thoughts.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that they can contain the fire and that there aren't any gusts. I'm glad you were able to go home; I know you were anxious about packing up some more belongings.

If this is arson, whoa boy :(

  • @AuroraRose41 The arson idea is scary, but I'm one of those "don't call it a zebra until you know it's not a horse" people.  The weather has been absolutely chaotic this year all over the country.  I am a little worried that arson rumors could cause arson because I'm paranoid and watch too much Criminal Minds...I hope with the wind dying down, the firefighters are able to do the best they can to contain the fires today.  I know lots of prayers are headed out that way for sure.  I live in FL and only know one person that lives in California (LA, I believe) and it seems like every other facebook status is about the fires - so tons of thoughts and prayers are definitely headed that way from the east coast! (and likely the other areas of the country)

This. This was actually my first thought. Really hoping it's mother nature not some crazy person and that there is minimal damage done from this point further.

  • @Blue&White and @caseface5, I didn't even think that it was arson until the fire chief came on the news saying he thought it was suspicious. There was a confirmed case overnight of an intentional brush fire that was set very close to the 700 acre one, so I think that's why everyone is exploring the idea. That brush fire was put out pretty quickly though.

I hope it's only weather related too, but a few of them started near high schools and colleges, and students are currently taking finals. I hope it wasn't the case that someone wanted to get out of finals, but it's possible.

There was a terrible fire here in Boston recently where two firefighters died, and initially, the department suspected arson because of how quickly the fire became uncontrollable. It turned out that the cause of the fire was a welding spark from construction next door, and the severity of the fire was actually pretty much entirely due to the weather that day. So suspecting arson doesn't necessarily mean anything.
