Isn't there a time limit for filing marriage licenses too? They may end up having to have a separate ceremony in order to make it legal now. And I hope they didn't files taxes as "married...".
What. The. Fuck.

Doesn't sound like the asshat husband/not husband really wants to be married. Pretty fucked up.
This is similar to the plot of a book I read. A pastor didn't file the marriage license, so three couples weren't even married, technically. The act of having to actually get married again made them all rethink their decisions.
I'm sorry this is real and not a fiction novel though. Trust sure is gone. Horrifying.
A fear of being married should've been addressed BEFORE THE WEDDING. Not just ignoring filing the apporiate paperwork and hoping your wife never figures it out.
Also, in our state, I'm pretty sure the officiant has to file it on our behalf. Wonder where she lives.
ETA: I also don't understand that the scary part wouldn't be to start being emotionally committed to someone for life and everyone knowing you were married/committed for life, but I guess that's me.
wow. Our officiant send our in. The certificate was waiting for us in mail when we got back from the HM. I'm not sure I would stay married to DH if he did that. What about taxes? God forbid he die, she would be out social security and such. What an ass.
What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests. Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I've heard of that book! I've been wanting to read it for a while. This one is so much worse because it wasn't an innocent mistake. That would be one thing - even if the husband had legitimately forgotten to file it, it would be just something to work through. This is just...I don't even know...
Holy cow. I would be changing the locks and taking his damn name off my insurance asap. I read some of the comments, and she had commented back that he had been on her insurance for a while as a domestic partner, and then she came back and changed it to married. I would have been furious and he would have felt my wrath for that one.
I say she changes the locks and starts burning his shit on the front lawn.
I can actually get how she's worried about the insurance more then anything. I think it's like going into shock and just only being able to focus on one thing and not see the walls falling around you. It's also the easiest problem to fix. So I can see just focusing in on it, not intentionally but just not being able to see the big picture.
Isn't this what happened on the finale of Mad About You?
They had been married by someone who was ordained but the later found out he was not in fact ordained. They'd done that the night before and then the next day did their wedding they'd planned but didn't do the real marriage license.

My mom loved that show.
Aha. I remembered about the night before/construction site wedding/subsequent PPD.
Wow! If my FI did that, I don't think I'd want to be married to him.
My officiant told us a story about a groom that didn't tell his bride that he forgot the marriage license.
Usually the officiant goes to the ceremony site and talk to the groom (because the bride is usually getting ready or whatnot) and takes the marriage license from him. Well the groom forgot the marriage license or never got it, and asked officiant not to tell the bride. So they had a fake wedding, and the bride didn't even know. Until after the wedding.
I guess they went to the officiant's house 2 days later and redid their vows with the marriage license and legally got married then. It was a cautionary tale about making sure to remember the license.
I'm confused about this... I've never been married so bear with me. I have a friend who got married in Mexico and had the marriage certificate translated but he said that the courts won't file a foreign document so their certificate has never been filed. However, he says they're still legally married. Is that true?
I also had a former coworker come back from her honeymoon and threaten her husband that she wasn't going to file the marriage certificate, that maybe it was a big mistake. They ended up getting divorced a few years later.

you have to file in the jurisdiction where they wedding took place. Meaning if you got married in Mexico or New York for that matter you can not file in CA. If you get married in Mexico you file in mexico (or whatever you need to do to make it legal there). If you get married in NY, you file in NY, even if you live say, in NJ.

I know what I would do! I'd go straight to the nastiest mother-fucking, son-of-a-bitch lawyer I could find and cut him off at the balls. I would get a restraining court order, too. The OP on that thread was so naive and stupid. Very sad for her and her child. I think that Daddy will be paying child support for a lot of years! All the brides who think that a marriage license is "only a piece of paper" need to read that story!
Fuck with me - maybe. Fuck with my kids - NO WAY!!!!

I think my head just exploded...

Holy.Effing.Shitballs. I can't even imagine.
He's been living and acting like a husband, but the actual act of making it legal freaks him out?
What a douchenozzle. I feel terrible for her and the child involved.
Aha.
I hope she's able to get everything straightened out
