  • Sometimes, parents of special needs children choose to pick their battles. There is no way for us to guess the extent of his disability over the Internet, or to assess this family's parenting skills, but it's possible that the things you find so bothersome are comparatively minor issues, considering what the entire family has gone through so far. It's also not unusual for kids with certain conditions to be engrossed by video games in a way that schoolwork or social interaction fail to match.
I just want to encourage you to take a closer look and try to better understand where your FI's family is coming from. For better or worse, this young man is about to be your brother.

You mentioned he kept the volume up. Down syndrome patients have a high risk of hearing disorders and hearing loss. Maybe he had the game level so loud because he couldn't hear it properly at a normal volume.
  • FI has an uncle that suffered a TBI about 15 years ago or so. He's confined to a wheelchair, and cannot verbally communicate. When he is out at a public event, such as a family party, at least 2 male family members have to take him to the bathroom. When he gets irritable he makes a loud grunting sound, and wriggles in his chair. He can be very loud when this happens.

He will be at our wedding and engagement party, and I'm not worried. I'm glad to have him there because not only do I love him as if he were my uncle, but I know it's important to FI. He became irritable at FI's cousins engagement party last year, and it did not ruin the party, trust me. Even if your FI's brother"misbehaves" at any point, it's not a big deal. As a guest, I would not be bothered at all. If this doesn't bother your FI, it definitely should not bother you.

  • You might be a nice person otherwise but your question is gross

  • My husband attended his aunt's wedding as a kid (about 10 yo). He was taking medication for his disabilities and they made him completely loopy. He doesn't even remember doing it but he was wandering around, staring off into space, and when somebody who was videotaping the event called his name, he turned around and yelled "BAH!" right into the camera. We just laugh at it if it weren't for the video the aunt probably wouldn't have noticed.

Excuse the lack of some punctuation. My iPhone doesn't like me today.
