Help me buy a car!

Re: Help me buy a car!

  • @theexactlee - Do some research to show DH that pretty much any financial advisor will tell you buying new is a terrible idea. It's better, fiscally speaking, to look at one a year or two old. Maybe that will help your cause?

  • @JaxInBlue I have a ford fiesta too. Its a 2013 one, it has great gas mileage, decent storage, and its reallllyyy cute. http://images.thecarconnection.com/sml/2013-ford-fiesta-4-door-sedan-se-angular-front-exterior-view_100401514_s.jpg and they are around 13,00 too!

  • I bought my new Honda Civic for $21K. You can get a it under $20K if you needed to, brand new. They come standard with so much more than what mine did now with the redesign. Check them out. Only reason why I want to get rid of it is because I bought a coupe and its just too small now.

  • I work in an industry that requires me to drive multiple cars daily ( like I seriously have driven almost every car there is that isn't some crazy sports car)  I also just bought vehicle , and guess what it was a Hyundai elantra!!

So I will put some things in perspective for you, the elantra is great on gas, I t looks stylish, and it has a good warranty. The bad news is that the seats stain like crazy, as in you spill water it is stained. I decided personally that I would just invest in some good seat covers ( I knew about the staining going in)

Also just an FYI I Got a 2013 model gls limited ( the middle package) it was a loaner car and only had 1600 miles when I got it less than two months ago. I won't go into the specifics but I will say that I was able to get it tax title everything out the door for under 20k
  • @theexactlee just read about the car accident hope you are okay. Btw I think you may have stolen my life the car I got rid of before I bought my elantra was a Mazda tribute.
  • Certified used is great. I would still have a trusted mechanic check it out. ( you pick the mechanic)

I drive a 2007 Handa Accord. I love it. Hope to have it till the wheals fall off.
  • I had a 2011 Honda Fit, and now I have a 2012 Fit (someone hit me and totaled my car on the freeway).

They're the greatest cars.  Definitely less than $20k, great mpg, and like a previous poster said, ridiculously large storage for such a small car.  I loved the Ford Fiesta too, but the Fit is way more spacious.  I love my car!

  • I also have a subaru imprezza (2011) as well, and it was brand new when I bought it (in 2010) and it was just under 20K. They are really great cars. They run great, are safe, are excellent in the snow, and the maintenance is minimal. The only thing is the gas mileage is on the lower side (mid to high 20s city) low 30s highway. But it has the boxer engine, so it's on the heavier side.

  • I have a Toyota Highlander, I have taken this car all over hell's half acre.  It is a 2006 with 120,000 miles. I have never (knock on wood) had a problem with it.  My sister had a camry and it was awesome.  SHe got a certified used one and never had any problems with it, either. My SILs have Hyundai Elantras and they LOVE them. But stay away from the Vera Cruz.  I know a few people who have had these for only a few years and they have never ending computer problems, heating problems, and problems that just can't be figured out as to what is causing them.  My friends that own a Vera Cruz their car is under warranty.  I worry what will happen when that warranty expires.
  • VW diesel SUV here, nothing close to your budget. But Oliver is this quiet, reserved looking truck who is wicked full up on power. I love my truck. It hauls everything I've tried, holds everything, comfortable for 4 adults on a 24hour drive.

It was between Oliver and a Toyota Highlander. The Toyota was a sluggish bear next to Oliver and the Toyota isn't a horrid truck.
  • I have a 2013 Camry. I love it. This is my 2nd Camry and 4th overall Toyota (I lease). I've never been unhappy with any Toyota I had.

If you do not go certified pre-owned, another great way to get a well-kept used car is by looking at estate sales.  You will find older cars with less than 10,000 miles on it.  The cars are beautifully kept and very well maintained. I once saw a car that was 10 years old with only 12,000 miles on it.  It looked brand new, and all of the routine maintenance was handled on time.
I know it is a little morbid, but elderly people, in good health, take wonderful care of their cares, and they do not drive a lot.  So they will have a car that spends most of the time in the garage and only takes them to the grocery store and church or a weekly visit to see the grandkids. When they pass on, sometimes, their children want a car that is a little more stylish, or they all ready own or lease a car, so they sell their parents car at an estate sale.
  • I love my 2010 Ford Fusion. We bought it last summer. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it runs better than any car I have ever had. FH has a 2011 Honda Accord than we bought brand new. I recommend those cars.

I wanted a Dodge Journey when we were looking for my car. My sister has one and it is roomy and drives smooth. I found one for $17,900 recently but FH shot down trading my car in for it.

BF has a 2013 Hyundai Elantra and its a great car  :)  The tech package is nice, I love the sunroof, and the back is roomy enough for adults to sit comfortably.

I have a 2007 Hyundai Accent hatchback and was just test driving the 2014 models - and they're great little cars but don't have the same tech options.

Edited to add: my 2007 Accent has 160,000 miles on it and is still going strong!
