ever happen upon a proposal?

This evening FI and I were strolling along the harbor and saw a guy propose! When we approached and passed them the girl wanted to leave because she was afraid the ring would fall off her hand into the water. I was so full of warm fuzzies for them: a sunset proposal at the harbor....

Another time I left work early and a guy was proposing in the building lobby. Interesting choice; maybe they met there?

Anyone accidentally witness a proposal?

I've never, but saw something on FB about a girl who witnessed a proposal in NYC and thought to grab her phone and snap some pics for the couple - was able to text them to the couple afterwards.

I'd definitely appreciate the pics if it was my proposal, but I'd be nervous to start snapping pics of some random person!

All the time. I live in NYC. Every year I see at least 5 proposals a year at Rockefeller center (I like going to see the tree every year). Sometimes I see the after effects of a proposal. I work by a park on Madison Avenue, so last summer I saw the remnants of a proposal. I guess the guy got a bunch of balloons that said "will you marry me?" I also saw a plane write it in the sky by this park but I didn't see the actual couple.

I saw a flash mob proposal at a decent distance once. FI (then boyfriend) had told me he wasn't sure he ever wanted to get married, and when he scoffed at them for their AWishness, I took it to heart a bit. But I learned later that he'd already decided he wanted to marry me by then. So he was really just not into the way the guy proposed, not the actual proposal part. You will not be surprised when I tell you that FI proposed in our living room, in private, on a Tuesday.

I've seen a few proposals around Baltimore... 2 at the harbor and 1 in the aquarium

They weren't AW or anything - just quiet moments I happened to notice that made me smile.

I saw one at the airport once!!! I was waiting at the baggage claim and a few people came out holding a huge sign that said Name Will You Marry Me? Then the guy walked out dressed in his military uniform. The girl went crazy! It was cute.

Never witnessed a proposal but I think it would be sweet to see.... on another more disturbing note, I did once walk by a couple having sex outside at night on a very popular walkway in the city. They didn't even flinch as they noticed my puppy and I walking by, just kept goin' at it. Awkward and kinda funny. lol

I saw one recently! Fi and I were walking through the japanese gardens. There was this dude kind of hiding off the path and I thought it was really weird. About 10 minutes later we went buy him again and he was still there, but as we were walking up I saw a couple and I put it together that the guy hiding was a friend. So I waited a minute and caught it from a distance- I had tons of the warm fuzzies. I could tell she cried and their body language was so cute.

When H and I were at Disneyland, we happened upon a proposal. In front of the castle, this guy got on one knee and proposed, but it was like the laziest proposal. He didn't seem very excited, and she said yes, but didn't seem very excited, lol.

Then she just took the ring and put it on her own finger, and they didn't embrace or kiss or anything. It was kind of awkward.

H also told me that one time he was at Dennys and saw a proposal. Some young guy was there with his friends and girlfriend and proposed to his girl. I'm not saying proposals have to be big fancy productions, but I might be a little disappointed if H had proposed at a Dennys...

For me, I don't think the location would have mattered but a proposal should have some feeling and emotion to it. When my ex-FI proposed, he did it at home with a bowl of fruit after being at the exhibition (like a fair or carnival). It really seemed like a half-assed "might as well do it now" kinda thing with zero thought put into it. I actually didn't take him serious at the time until he clarified that he was serious and then I was like "oh, ok". No emotion whatsoever. That should have been the first clue for me to get out.... in the end it was a very verbally/emotionally abusive relationship and he ended up sleeping with one of his students. Thank go it ended before we hit the aisle!

When my current FI, R, proposed there was boatloads of emotion. It was so well thought out and carefully planned. I bawled the minute I saw the ring and was so excited that night that I could barely sleep. Even now, being 2 months away from our wedding, I get the excited butterflies and think about how I can't wait to marry this wonderful man. I get that some people are more laid back but I still feel like you have to have some sort of emotion when a proposal is happening.

When my H proposed we were on vacation and had just gotten some ice cream on the beach. He "tripped" and pulled out the ring. There were a few people still having an evening swim in the ocean and started clapping and cheering for us. It was really cute!

FI and I were leaving Red Robin after a late lunch one day and saw a man in street clothes down on one knee in the kitchen proposing his server girlfriend. We left before we could see if she said yes, but she sure did look happy.

FI and I were walking around "santa's village" a week before Christmas. While passing this giant light up tree, we spotted a guy on his knee, and a girl saying omg omg yes. I was admiring the moment, but the guy spotted us, and asked if we could take some pictures. We took about ten photos on both of their phones. They seemed really happy. It was touching, and I am glad that we were able to help snap some photos for them.

On an unrelated note, the knot had a "best proposal" (I'm not sure if that was the actual name) contest about a year back. I actually witnessed one of the top ten proposals mentioned, and the majority of their story was made up. It took a lot to not comment on it.

I saw a proposal at a Claim Jumper once. She kept shaking her head because she was stunned that he was proposing. But she said yes, and they hugged. I was a kid at the time, my dad went over, shook the guy's hand and congratulated him. She was glowing as they ate dessert.

There were no witnesses for our proposal. It would have been nice to have someone to take the photo, but it was also great to share the experience just with him.

When my ex-FI proposed, he did it at home with a bowl of fruit after being at the exhibition (like a fair or carnival). I actually didn't take him serious at the time until he clarified that he was serious and then I was like "oh, ok". No emotion whatsoever. That should have been the first clue for me to get out.... in the end it was a very verbally/emotionally abusive relationship and he ended up sleeping with one of his students. Thank go it ended before we hit the aisle!

Even now, being 2 months away from our wedding, I get the excited butterflies and think about how I can't wait to marry this wonderful man. I get that some people are more laid back but I still feel like you have to have some sort of emotion when a proposal is happening.

CamiSelene I am going to disagree because you seem to imply that other people should be able to see the emotion. I didn't ball, didn't cry, and didn't seem emotional. In fact FI asked me twice if I was okay. I was thrilled and overwhelmed. When that happens I shutdown and don't cry or show emotion. Yes I hugged and kissed him and exclaimed "yes! omg I'm so happy" but I wasn't emotional at all. I never show emotion when surprised. It is just this weird thing. Those closest to me know this, but had he done it in public, I think people would have though I was a bitch. Now 20 min later when I went to tell my dad and it had time to sink in, I started to cry. I guarantee I will cry on my wedding day, because I had build up. I've been thinking about it. It isn't a surpise.

Those closest to me know this, but had he done it in public, I think people would have though I was a bitch. Now 20 min later when I went to tell my dad and it had time to sink in, I started to cry. I guarantee I will cry on my wedding day, because I had build up. I've been thinking about it. It isn't a surpise.

I'm sorry about the confusion, but I understood what you were saying, I guess I just thought the pp was saying something slightly different. Maybe I was jumping to conclusions, but I get frustrated when people ask if I cried and such. I don't know, I guess I feel like people judge because I didn't cry and I can't help that. I cry on build-ups not surprises.

I understand where you're coming from. I can be a crier, but most certainly did not cry during or after my proposal, I think I was just so excited. To each their own, but like monkeysip said, it is strange the girl didn't show any emotion at all.

@thisismynickname...yeah. The proposal story was something along the lines of a dramatic grand gesture in which the guy cleared out the ice rink by having her sister "pretend to get injured", and then he proposed in front of hundreds of people in the center ice area...the truth? This all happened during a zamboni break (which are scheduled for the same time every day) in a small corner, and unless we wanted to skate again, we all had to bear witness to their "awesome proposal" (you aren't allowed to re-enter if you leave). I really hate the fact that there was even a competition that compared proposals (because they are unique to the couple, and preferences are different), but people shouldn't lie to feel better about a proposal or tweak your story to get a favorable outcome. Best proposal for them? Yes. Best proposal for me? No, but it was a hell of a zamboni break!

I was working as a cocktail waitress at so-so bar when some guy dropped to his knee & proposed to his girlfriend on a random weekday night that was not busy at all. He wanted us to announce it over the microphone to all 15 other people in the bar...hawkward.

I also saw someone propose at a college bar during St. Paddy's Day last year. I personally would not appreciate a crowded drunk proposal, but hey, that's just me.

@ElcaB that reminds me of another proposal I accidentally witnessed. It was at an upscale (and crowded) bar during happy hour. While the proposal at an elegant restaurant is fairly traditional, doing it at a bar is.... not. I just figured that's where they met. It appeared they were surrounded by family and friends, which is very sweet.

I went into Starbucks one evening and when I went to order saw that one of the boards behind the registers had been redesigned to "pop the question". My friend and I were commenting on how cute it was when the barista (male) said in a very dejected tone..."She said NO". We very quickly placed our orders and moved along - I felt terrible for him but at the same time I'm thinking if she had turned him down I'd have had a co-worker change the board so that he wasn't reminded of it every time a customer read it.... :-/
