So most of you know I wanted to have a beach wedding and a stupid tropical storm showed up on my squashing my plans.  I'm not going to say it was ruined, because the weddings was still awesome.   It's just that it was disappointed.

OK, since THANKSGIVING  I along with my mom and siblings have been planning a 70th surprise birthday party for my dad.   It's to be a backyard BBQ at my parent's house.  Dad has tee time that morning with a bunch of friends.  As soon as he leaves we swoop in and set the place up for the party.  None of us living near my parents.  Brother, his family and myself are flying in on Thursday for this and staying at my sister's which is 2 hours away.  Other brother lives 5 hours away.  So we are leaving the respected houses early the morning of the party driving down to set this up and then staying at their place that night.

So the point of the this post?  Yep you got it, the 10 day has 70% chance of showers.   The national map is one big blog of med-to-dark green the entire east of the Mississippi.

GRRRRRRR

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Oh goodness, what terrible luck! I hope it hold off that day
  • Gaaaahhhhh! Is the party next weekend? I usually find that it's good luck when it calls for rain 10 days out, because by the time the day rolls around the storm shifts or speeds up or slows down and it doesn't actually rain. Good luck!!!

If it makes you feel any better, I was supposed to get engagement pictures taken this weekend on a nearby island with the cityscape in the background... but just learned they scheduled a damn Nascar race there. FUCK! My pics have been scheduled for 4 months, the weather's going to be gorgeous, and I don't know if I can reschedule.

Oh boo. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that the forecast changes and the rain steers clear of your dad's birthday bash!

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.

That sucks, but the NASCAR schedule has been out for more than 4 months...

  • Booooooo!!! Really hope it holds out!!

I will admit that is the SINGLE thing that I miss about living in Phoenix. People there have no idea what it's like to even consider the weather. They just plan everything as if the sun is shining- because it freakin is. It's so not fair that that is not even a factor or concern in anything they plan!

I live back in MA now and am pretty convinced that my luck will bring storm on my wedding day-I've learned to already accept it lol

  • Sending you vibes that the rain will hold off until the end of the party/next day.  But at 10 days out a lot can change so hopefully the storm will shift and not hit where they currently say it will.

Well this isn't a major race or a venue that normally hosts races...it's the Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle. It's only been around since 2012, and as you may have heard, Detroit really isn't on top of things when it comes to attracting and maintaining events. Plus Belle Isle was recently taken over by the state as a state park. The race wasn't posted on the Belle Isle schedule at the time I planned my pictures.

  • My parents have a big house, so having it inside is not a problem.  They have a pretty open floor plan we can just move out the living room furniture and setup the tables there.  They have a pool table and such.  So that part is not really a problem.

The big issue if it rains they will not play golf.  There are not really many ways to get him out of the house for 2-3 hours.   It's a small beach town.  Rain =/= no beach (dad hates the beach anyway).

Plus it's a lunch BBQ.   So taking him out to lunch to get him out of the house then serving lunch is weird.  But that might be our only option.

I have a call into my NWS friend to ask for advice.    I would not be worried if it was a small blob of rain. That can easily change.   It's just the map is almost completely green east of the Mississippi from Maine down to  FL.   A little harder to hide from that.

    Really need positive knottie vibes.

***Stuck in Box*** Oh, well that isn't NASCAR... I was trying to figure out what island you were going to be on in Dover, DE this weekend. lol No wonder I was confused.

I'm so happy NASCAR in in Dover this weekend.   We have to drive past the track on our way to my parents.  So do most of our guests.  Next weekend would have really sucked.

Heh, sorry, they're all the same to me. IndyCar, FormulaOne, whatever. Loud cars and stinky drunk people. Not the ideal setting for engagement portraits. :)

  • Oh noooo! I hope it changes! We had sunny weather on the forecast for our wedding day up until the day before, when it changed from 75 and sunny to 95 and stormy. So that's the opposite of what I'm hoping for you - I hope it does a 180 and turns into sunshine.
  • Tightly crossed fingers and lots of happy thoughts!

  • Lynda, you were so nice and encouraging to me when Hurricane Sandy hit on my DD's wedding weekend. You told me about your outdoor tropical storm themed wedding : ) You were right the bad weather didn't ruin the happy occasion. Your dad is going to be so happy to see all of you that the weather won't matter a bit. But, I hope it turns around for you. have a great time with your family.

    Aww.  Thank you.

I know it will be awesome.  His cousins are coming in from OH and FL.  His nieces are flying in from FL and MA.  I'm coming in from CO, brother from AZ.  He is going to be so surprised.

My parents get together with some old neighbors every few years.  This year its where my parents live.  So he thinks he is having the neighbors over to his house after golfing.  SURPRISE.

It's funny because I know he will be cleaning and setting up the house for those 16 people.  Little does he know it will actually be 80.

  • Oh that's funny. Your dad's a lucky guy.

The meteorologist says that the ten day forecast is basically meaningless. You won't get much in the way of accuracy until three days out. Five would give you an idea.
LOL - by last night it was down to 10%.  This morning back up to 30%.  I'm just going to step away from weather.com until next week or this weather roller coaster ride will give me a heart attack.

Part of the issue is my dad flying back today (he works overseas)  which means he is attached to my mom until the party.  So we had to make up plans now because she will not be able to talk privately to us in the days leading up to the party.

A co-worker of mine is getting married tomorrow, and last week when we got lunch she was saying she was so nervous because the 10-day forecast projected rain.  Low and behold, a week later and tomorrow is supposed to be a beautiful sunny day!  Hold out hope, your luck might change :)
