Ring Stolen from Jeweler

If I were you reading the stuff I post on here, i would call MUD on myself.  But I shit you not, this is what went down this weekend.

I took my ring to get cleaned over the weekend because we were going to the cabin and I didn't want to take them there, plus they needed to be cleaned.

I get a call from my jeweler, SOMEONE STOLE MY RING. STOLE. IT.

I was like. "What do you mean someone STOLE IT."

Apparently the cleaner guy set it down when he went to the bathroom or something, and someone came into the room and took it. But they have zero idea who it is or how they got in the back because they don't work there.

They're going to replace my ring, which is nice. But they stopped making it and have nothing remotely similar,  so I have to pick an entirely different one, which also sucks because we bought the matching band so now I have this random band and nothing to fit with it.  They're also upgrading my ring, which is nice I guess but I'm still upset. Oh, and the new rings won't come in for 8 weeks because I'm "oversize" at a 9.5.

I'll post pictures once I get it in, if ya'll want to see it. But like, ROAR. Be bitchy with me, please.

  • I'm feeling upset for you. I'm wondering if it wasn't another employee who decided that they needed it. Good luck with the jeweler going forward. I don't think it's possible for them to grovel enough
  • That is terrible!!! You have every right to be upset!

  • OP that sucks! Do they not have any security camera footage? I know I would be really upset in that situation. And did you buy the wedding ring from the same shop? If so, I would be asking this to swap my band in for one that matches the new ring too.

I'm really sorry you're going through this! I'm posting from mobile but picture a wine gif here!

  • I'm so so upset. Mostly because like, when I took my Grandma's family ring in to be resized (at a different store) they THEW IT OUT. The thought the envelope was empty, thew it out, and that was it.  I have terrible luck with rings apparently.

  • OMG!! That is terrible.
  • Excuse me that is their fault for not being responsible for the ring. I would throw the biggest fit and demand they remake a custom ring exactly like it for free. What jeweler doesn't have security cameras? The fuck?

Girl this makes me so mad I wish I could fight this battle for you.

  • I would throw a fit until they made your exact ring! I can't believe they would be so irresponsible!

  • Oh holy hell. I am so sorry. There are no words for how completely fucking terrible that is.

They had better be giving you a matching wedding band for free, too.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • Holy shit. Fists would be flying. I'm so, so sorry. They better replace it with a huge rock, matching band, and an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner so you never have to go back there again.

  • Oh my god, I am so sorry. How do they not have security cameras??What kind of incompetent jeweler is this?? I am so upset for you. You should definitely file a police report.

  • @phira It was Michael Hill Jeweler. They told me and I started crying like a 7 year old, and called my mom. It wasn't my finest moment but like... to explain to my father that this jeweler lost the ring my fathers brother (who died in a car accident in 1969 3 weeks after he gave her this ring) gave to my grandma... Like, that was the hardest thing I had to do, like ever.
  • @simky906 We bought it as a set from the store, yeah.
  • Then I definitely think you should ask them to trade in for a matching wedding band! Be as calm and rational as you can when you ask (as someone who works in retail I can tell you that I will bend over backwards to help the nice customers) but don't drop the issue. Your ring was stolen on their premises, so they should do everything in their wet to make it right!

Oh no, if this happened to me they'd be custom making me a ring to exactly match the one they lost, with better metal and a bigger stone. Was anything else stolen? If not, they could be lying about the theft because they damaged it in some way, or someone at the store accidentally sold it to another customer?

Have you spoken to the police yet? If not, I'd be suspicious because it is your property so the police will need your information in case it is recovered.
This!! I would not just accept any old ring, they should make you the one you want. I would be beyond distraught if someone stole my ring. And I would certainly never go back to that place again! Their security is more than lacking. When you get your new ring- get it inspected by another shop to make sure they really gave you what they told you they would. I've heard horror stories of places swapping out diamonds for lesser stones.

  • Wow. Nothing to add, but I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry that happened to you! That is terrible!

I agree.  Honestly, I would make them replicate my ring.  And I would call the police.

  • Oh no, that's awful. I'm so sorry. I second the recommendation of contacting the police with a detailed description of your ring - in case it turns up somewhere, or in case this is part of a pattern.

  • Do they not have cameras in the employee work areas? We have cameras in our small tattoo shop that doesn't handle peoples' expensive and sentimental pieces. I would think a jewler would have cameras all over the place.

Yes a thousand times yes! That's just ridiculous.

And all h*ll would break loos if a family ring was tossed away!

  • I am so sorry you're going through this! I really have no good advice, but think PPs have given you a lot of different options in how you can approach this with the jeweler.

  • Oh my gosh, Cookie.  I didn't read your post and just read the picture and was like OMG AM I BEING OVER DRAMATIC! But then I read the post.  Jeeze.  I gotta calm down lol
  • While I am not doubting the story, I am trying to figure out why you had to leave the ring at the store for an extended period of time.  When I go to the jeweler, he takes my jewerly, soaks it and steam cleans it all while I'm there and watching.

I'm actually questioning the jeweler and if he is lying.
This is what I meant before. If the police haven't contacted you, that means he likely didn't file a police report. Why? Something was stolen.  I'd be suspicious that he damaged it and was hoping to get off with a lesser ring that he is hoping to pass off as a better ring, someone in his shop accidentally sold it to another customer not realizing it was in for a cleaning and not inventory (and not wanting to contact the other customer to admit said mistake and have to return money), or something else.

If he hasn't contacted the police, you need to ASAP.  You also need to demand he make you a replica, along with improving the metal quality and stone quality.  If he refuses, you need to PLASTER Yelp, Wedding Boards, etc with negative reviews. And contact the BBB

  • @dragonblood13 Are you serious? He said it usually takes 24 hours to "make it sparkle"  Oh god. I'm just going to make him give my money back and high tail it out of there and buy it somewhere else.  It won't be the same, but I'll feel safer.

You need to call the police before you do anything.  And what money back? You mean reimbursement for the ring he let get stolen? Had you had it previously appraised? If not, you need to take a picture of it to a different jeweler, ask them how much it would be to recreate it, and have him reimburse you THAT amount.
