Chit Chat

So I found a knife today.

My company volunteered with BlightBusters this afternoon. 900 people in 3 areas of Detroit, cleaning graffiti at the senior center and boarding up windows of nearby abandoned homes, pulling weeds and tilling a future urban garden, and - my group - cleaning up and raking knee-deep leaves at a city park so it can be mowed. Hadn't been there for 5 minutes and found a hunting knife with an 8" blade. Someone else found a shotgun shell. Way to keep it klassy, D. Break those stereotypes!

FI was bummed I didn't keep the knife, but I thought it might have been evidence.

How was everyone else's day?! Did I miss anything more exciting than a potential murder weapon?

Re: So I found a knife today.

  • Haha, no murder weapons on my end. My day was nothing spectacular (except I did wear my really cute retro dress that I bought a few months ago.) I'm probably going to head to a kickboxing class once I'm out of work.

  • I currently have a 60 year old customer sitting in my kids baseball mitt chair. It has a 75 lb weight limit. This is the least of my problems today.

    This week blows.

    Well that won't end well.

  • I got pulled for some unexpected task today and didn't get lunch until 2:00. I had breakfast at 5:30, so I was HANGRY.

  • This reminds me of a knife set FI bought at a con, neither over the legal size to carry around.  They're supposedly fighting knives, but really people just buy them because they look really cool.  We use them as utility knives, they should probably be hung on the wall or something but we open letters and scrape gunk off stuff with them, open packaging etc.  When he was in college, instead of explaining that to his roommate, he just started talking about how the knife is useful in a fight.  Freaked the kid out so much.

Of course they messed with each other all semester.  One time I made a few no face masks (Like the one in my profile pic) and we would put them on stuff, either take photos of ourselves like my pic, or put the mask over characters on TV such as Big Bird or Kevin Smith or the MST3K cast, and send them to his phone from my number, which he didn't know.  Also FI put clothes on a life sized cut out of David Tennant and put it in his bed.  Of course, for the record, this roommate takes a joke really well and doesn't get upset with us.  He just gets startled then laughs it off.  If he seriously approached us and asked us to knock it off we would.

  • I've been so busy at work.  I leave on vacation on Thursday and my boss gave me a project yesterday that needs to be done by tomorrow.  The project itself should not have taken me that long, but his incompetent son has made it 4 times as hard as it needs to be.

Good news is son is being phased out.  Woohoo.!!

I want to say the knottie vibes have been working.  The weather for party is looking really good.  Thanks !

  • My client threw me under the bus and our fridge died. I'm on the train heading to FMIL's for dinner and ordered a replacement from my phone.

But I'm wearing a dress that makes me look great and am about to be overfed homemade chicken in mole while FI installs her AC.

I just want to crash with a pint of Ben & Jerry's.

  • Aww, my good ol' hometown representing!

Your day sounds way exciting than mine--which included a hour hour meeting to discuss "team flow" and "synergy" and every other business-speak buzz word you can think of.  Uggh.

We had a 3-hour "rah rah" all company meeting before we left for the volunteer work... all sorts of garbage like that, including a bunch of horribly off-key people singing "So Happy Together" on selfie video.

chibiyui can I just say seconded?   And what do you do again? I'm trying to figure out what has a baseball mitt chair.

    I sell furniture.

Also now I'm super pissy because it takes 20 to 25 business days to order a certified copy of a birth certificate. H just submitted to add me onto his insurance with his last name. So I'm not sure how this will play out

  • I had three hours of faculty meetings again this morning (yesterday was 3 hours of meetings in the AM and CPR training in the afternoon). I totally wheeled my comfy chair down the hall, though. I spent all weekend in my classroom purging and organizing, including getting rid of a ton of books. My back was NOT going to be happy with me if I spent 6 hours in a hard plastic chair!

Lunch was on the school at a nice Mexican restaurant--good food, and nice to have time to do something like that (even with our whole staff there, we only have like 15 people), but sad because we were saying farewell to two teachers...including one who has been my neighbor for 6 years. :(
  • Well I didn't find a murder weapon... I had an ok day. I just worked, came home and put on pjs. Now I'm watching Modern Family and wishing I had a milkshake.
  • I had day two of a work conference. People were shouty. It was unpleasant.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • I had my first day with a new charting system at work. Which basically means I had no idea how to do my job. Plus, I live in Omaha and we are having MAJOR storms right now. So we had a tornado warning this afternoon and had to move all the patients into their bathrooms to keep them safe. Everything is flooded and some areas got baseball sized hail. One local car dealership had $152 million in damage to over 45,000 vehicles. Ready for this week to be over.

That would freak me out to find a knife like that. What did you do with it?

I'm trying to fight the depression from this divorce stuff. My car is in the shop, too and it's getting a little out of hand. So I ditched work and went surfing for the first time in my life. I was actually able to do it! I stood up and rode and everything. Couldn't get out of the damn wetsuit by myself to save my life, but being outdoors and in the ocean made me happy.
  • I'm focusing on my side research project right now, so today was all about the herpes. My PI went to a meeting about my new research facility and the facility manager tried to argue that I need to be trained by the facility staff to be able to continue working. I trained the facility staff in the first place, so the facility manager wants the staff that I trained to train me.

  • @ic07 ((((hugs))))
  • way to go @lc07 on surfing.  I'm no so coordinated.

Have you tried skydiving?  That is pretty cool too.

  • Oh jeez, finding a murder weapon can't feel good.  The moms at my elementary school used to have to do sweeps of the playground for dangerous stuff, but it was mostly needles there.  Crazy the shit you find in parks.

I just did a shit ton of bar exam study (some of it at the pool), got a massage (yay!) and then totally crashed for a wicked long nap.  I have been sick for a week-ish and that, plus the constant studying and memorization, is just wearing me down.  Tomorrow I get to have a catch-up day at least.

I went skydiving once. That's enough for me. I have two friends with serious injuries d/t skydiving. But I'm glad I had the experience. I also did the second highest bungee jump in the world. Which was actually scarier than sky diving.

I've battled anxiety for about 10 years on and off. Doing "extreme" things and exercise seem to be a good release of the adrenaline that I build up from anxiety. I'm not a risk taker generally speaking, though. So hiking and yoga (and now surfing) are good outlets for me.

I feel more depressed than anxious now, though. So being in the sun and the salt water feels healing. Thanks for the congratulations. I thought I'd just inhale a lot of salt water. Which I did. But I was actually able to surf, too, which was really cool.
  • Pretty chill on my end.

Except I came home for my dinner break to a package of Hersheys Kisses and a package of Hugs on my bed with notes in between.  So basically, with the notes, it read "Hugs and Kisses to you!" from H.  So SWEET! I love little romantic gestures.

Then when I got home from work, I went for a bike ride, which was really nice.

Put it in my ankle sheath with the other one, duh. Gotta stay safe. ;-)

I turned it in to the Blight Busters head honcho guy. I figured they must have a protocol for dealing with stuff like that cuz it certainly couldn't be the first time someone found something like that. But he probably just kept it.

It was pretty freaky though... it was close to the street, so I'm sure someone threw it out of their car window. It's not the type of thing you mistakenly drop on a leisurely stroll through a park. Thankfully there wasn't any blood on it. I would have lost my mind if it had. Hopefully it was just used in a robbery or something and never actually harmed anyone.

  • It's so upsetting when Detroit keeps proving it's stereotypes. I always feel the need to tell anyone who will listen that it's not that bad here, and please come visit the rest of michigan as well! Don't forget the UP!!!

Yeah I will say we were in an EXTREMELY rough part of town, where no tourist in their right mind would be going anyway. Downtown, Midtown, Corktown, Greektown, all perfectly safe and lovely and please come visit!

  • I lost my knife, but I highly doubt this one was mine - first of all, I lost it about 15 years ago, and it was only two inches and it was being used for wood carving, and was definitely not lost in your area . . .
My day is boring - cleaning, looking for jobs, picking MIL up from the hospital.  Maybe I'll get some excitement!
