Toothpaste recommendation? + Snark

Kind of a random question.

So H and I have a love-hate relationship with toothpaste. Every time we run out, I buy a different type and every time, the flavor is so unbelievably strong. it about burns our mouths off!

This last time, I read every. single. package in the stupid store and I bought the one that said Cool MILD!!!!!! Mint. (Emphasis added.). Well, I don't know what the product namers were smoking when they named it, but that was the absolute furthest thing from mild. It was possibly the worst- and strongest-tasting toothpaste I've ever had in my entire life. I am very careful brushing my teeth and only use a tiny amount because I feel like it's burning my lips off if it touches them for very long.

Thank goodness, we're almost out. (I'm a skinflint, what can I say?) Does anyone have any recommendations for a mild-tasting toothpaste? Anyone have a similar issue with toothpaste?

  • Tom's is really mild and it doesn't have nasty chemicals in it. It's expensive, though.

I just bought the crest 3rd whitening stuff. The mint flavor is mild but it has this bubblegum aftertaste that I'm not too fond of.

  • I generally dislike both mint and cinnamon, which is what toothpaste tends to come in, so I feel your pain. Crest makes a citrus flavor that I really like. Or, have you tried any sensitive varieties like Sensodyne? If you really can't handle any of them, I'd just go to kid's toothpaste, honestly.

Yeah the citrus is pretty ok, although I've had a hard time finding it. There's a vanilla version too. I use sensodyne because my teeth got sensitive, but I think the taste is pretty gross.

ETA: I used this brand of mouthwash when my breath got inexplicably bad. It worked, and it's way more mild than regular mouthwash. I haven't tried the toothpaste but maybe give that a shot. I used to order it from amazon but I saw Target started to carry it the other day. It looks like this:

  • If you haven't tried it already, I'd go with Sensodyne. I don't think it really even has a taste. Or just stick with kids toothpaste like @artbyallie suggested.
  • FI and I use Ultrabrite Whitening toothpaste. It is a brand under Colgate and just has one flavor (some type of mint). It doesn't seem strong to us and it foams up nicely. It also only costs $0.98.

  • If there's a Trader Joe's near you, their toothpaste is really mild.  It's minty but it mostly just tastes like baking soda.

  • Regular old Aquafresh, the cheapest one, has a pretty mild flavor, as does Tom's.
  • I only use the cheapest Colgate. I HATE gross toothpaste.
  • Ugh FI is all about the strongest of the strong mint flavor. Blech.

Do other foods taste that strong to you, or is it only the toothpaste that gives you troubles? Are your teeth sensitive anyway so the act of brushing is hurting them rather than the flavor of the paste? I really like Sensodyne Pronamel, especially after using whitening toothpaste for a while. I'd go with Aquafresh if you really just hate the mint though.

  • I like cinnamon-flavored toothpastes for similar reasons. I'm also cheap. I've been using Colgate Optic White lately because I got a ton of it for free (again with my couponing...). I'm not in love with it but the it isn't a terribly strong mint flavor.

  • I hate strong-flavored toothpastes, especially minty ones. We've been using Crest Pro-Health in Clean Cinnamon. The flavor is really mild, and there's not much of an after-taste.

This is what I use. Pretty much no taste.

  • Sensodyne is my favorite because I have terrible sensitivity in my upper teeth and when I use it, they feel much better, It is expensive, but worth it to me. However, my mom coupons and gave me this Crest toothpaste, cinnamon flavor..which I love. So that's my fave atm. :)

  • I'm useless because I love strong-flavored toothpastes. So I guess avoid Crest Whitening + Scope in Mint?
  • Seconding Sensodyne and Tom's. I HATE mint and I can at least handle these.

I used kiddie toothpaste until I went to college because I just couldn't handle how minty so many regular toothpastes are. I bought and used regular toothpaste in college to avoid looking silly, and it took me about 6 months to get used to it. No advice here--I managed to get used to it, but I don't think that means you necessarily will.

Tom's and TJ's and similar, or kiddie toothpaste, might work well for you.

Nope. Toothpaste is the only thing. And my teeth aren't sensitive at all.

I have tried Aquafresh, and I didn't like it at all. I thought it was pretty strong tasting. I've also used whatever 3D whitening flavor was minty, and it was too strong.

I might have to try Toms (I've heard it's pretty mild) or kids toothpaste.

  • Biotene is very mild, but it also won't clean your teeth very well....
  • I like the Crest 3D white and don't personally find it overly minty - but I also LOVE the listerine taste so . . . . I might not be a good one to gauge by . . .

But I will say that while you may be able to tolerate the taste of the more organic toothpastes (Toms and TJ's brands) I have noticed that my patients that use those brands tend to have a lot more build up and some level of gum disease - even if they brush 3-4x/day. Just an FYI from what I've personally noticed.

  • I don't get why the good cleaning ones are so strong.  Why can't they make the toothpaste exactly the same and just leave out the flavoring or cut the flavoring in half or so?  Do the ingredients taste so bad they have to cover it up?

    So annoying!
  • There's a new line that I keep seeing at Target called Crest Be. The flavors are funky- mint chocolate, lime spearmint, etc. We got free samples at home and I found them completely disgusting but FSS loved the chocolate. It might be worth a shot.

Those do sound disgusting!  We don't have a Target near by, and I'd be scared of trying any of those flavors!  Thanks though.

There is actually a type of chocolate toothpaste that has been recalled due to intense allergic reactions. I don't know for sure if its this brand - and of course I can't find the article - but just an FYI.

Also - those flavors do sound pretty gross.
