"FI's" fancy knives get done by hand.  "My" knives (if we had a dishwasher) would be blade down.  Blade up is just asking for cuts.

  • My crappy Harris Teeter knives go in the dishwasher, point down. The Henckels get hand-washed.

I think you might also be the only one who lives in NYC!

Randomly at work last summer, we were talking about housekeeping/appliances.  My conversation with a colleague basically went like this:

Me: [something about Fi loading the dishwasher]
    ...conversation shifts to laundry...
Coworker: I hate folding my sheets.  I'm just about to put them on the bed anyway!
Me: So why do you fold them?  Just take them straight out of the dryer and put them on the bed.
Coworker: You have a washer/dryer in your apartment?
    Me: Yeah.
Coworker: AND you have a dishwasher?
    Me: Yeah...
Coworker: Wait.  Do you live in NJ?
    Me: Um, yep.
Coworker: You don't know my struggle.

Love it.  Living in the islands  I often didn't have either.   Which was fine.  When I bought my condo the first thing I did was put in a washer and dryer.  That is a must have before a dishwasher any day.

@pinkcow13 - Even though I have one now I rarely run it.  I tend to just hand wash.  It's saves on power and water also.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I used to have one in college, at the campus apartments. Now that I am a working adult I don't. Sigh. That's a good point, though, I would think it would save on power and water.

@JCBride2015 - The laundry in the apt thing is awesome. Again, also had that in college. We at least have one in the building. I've never used a public laundromat, that's the one thing I would never budge on!

Yeah I agree.  It would not have been a deal breaker to have no W/D in the apartment, but I wouldn't look at apartments that didn't at least have one in the building.

I was spoiled when I lived in VA: we had a full-size W/D and an actual laundry room with a back door.  Then again, my roommate and I had a huge 2-bedroom townhouse for $1000 less per month than our current 1-bedroom apartment here in NJ.  It's all relative!

    BOx!!!!

I was spoiled my Senior year of college. I got into the on campus apartments, so it was a 4 bedroom apartment (my own room!!!!). My roomate and I share only the bathroom area, and our rooms were next to each other. We had a living area, kitchen, laundry in the apartment, fully furnished. Sigh. Those were the days.

  • We put some of our steak knives in the dishwasher. We lay them horizontally on the upper rack for the cups. We don't put them in the silverware holder because we will cut ourselves lol.

H and I didn't have one for a year and a half. We just moved, and our new house has a dishwasher. I also grew up without one, and didn't have one for two years living in a college apartment.

Don't people have more than one set of sheets?

I've never lived anywhere without a dishwasher and clothes washer/dryer except one year in the dorms, when I brought everything home. Spoiled suburbia life.

If your lucky like me, you'll get one when you get married. He doubles as a trash compactor, lawn mower and bug killer. Also might replace some bedroom appliances ;-p

We have three sets.  But honestly I tend to just wash the one set and put it right back on the bed.  I have this favorite set that looks really good with our duvet cover.  And that means no folding.

I have no idea what's up with this coworker.  He's a single guy.  He said sometimes after he folds the sheets, he is too lazy to put them on the bed so he just sleeps on top of the blanket.  Ew.

See, the dishwasher was my deal-breaker the last time I moved. As I have mentioned before, FI and I are both such damn slobs that life without one was making us miserable. At least this way it's just clutter, not actual slovenliness.

But oh, to have in-house laundry! I'm all about the wash-and-fold, but someday I will have my very own washer-dryer in my place, and the days of being "behind" on laundry will be over. OVER, I say!
