@buddysmom80 - I don't know if this is true in her area, but where I live, places with horses are required to post signs saying any interaction with a horse is at your own risk and the owners of the horse/property are not at fault. With them being a barn, they should have the insurance to cover anyone who is hurt.

Now that I think about it though, I'm not sure how this would work with a private event like a wedding.

ETA: And by post signs, I mean that it is law in the state that if they have the sign posted, they are not liable. Just thought I'd make that clearer.

  • @FoxandBunny and @buddysmom80, My barn has a policy where any visitors that come into the barn have to sign a form understanding that they are around horses and that they are animals. I would have to double check with the owners how it would be with a wedding.

I would double check because most adults know not to mess around with a horse, but if you have kids at your wedding, that's a whole different story. Like I said earlier it might just be best for the owners and you guys to have a blanket liability insurance policy so that everyone is covered.

Another issue is liability insurance. If someone got injured at the event who is responsible? The hosts or the people who own the property and their homeowner's insurance?

I think you would be able to address this concern with personal liability insurance? Or private event insurance? I know stuff like that exists, I just don't know anything about it.

  • We had trouble getting private event insurance for our wedding after we moved out of state (we did manage to get it done because it was important to us, but we had to try a few different insurance companies first).

I'm also allergic to hay so I would need a lot of Benadryl...which means I wouldn't be able to drink.  Which is fine, cause I mean at least someone would have a DD (on Benadryl, but details).
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton

As far as the inherit risk legislation goes, it only applies to getting hurt by the horses. So, say there is uneven footing (at barns that pretty much a given) and a lady attending this wedding breaks her ankle walking across said footing. The inherit risk leg. isn't going to cover the owner in that case, because it wasn't an injury sustained while participating in a equestrian activity.

I would still drink on benadryl, but I probably wouldn't have the chance because I'd be passed out on my dinner plate :)
