I went to the dentist. And I survived.

Re: I went to the dentist. And I survived.

  • Oh! I forgot to mention this. My FI had two cavities. And he was drilled with NO NOVOCAINE. He said he does that all the time. I'm pretty sure he's an alien.
Yeah, that's not human. My ex had all four wisdom teeth pulled with just a local anesthetic because he didn't want to pay for the anesthetia. There's no way I'd let someone come at my mouth like that without being put out.
Right!?!? When I had my wisdom teeth out, I had the gas and then anesthesia. But, I'm a giant baby.

I had IV sedation.  They say I fought them the entire time I was out.

The last time I had work done I was breastfeeding. I had to wait three hours from the time I was injected to be able to feed my son again, which meant he was going to go about 3.5 to 4 hours between feedings which was a long time at his age (he absolutely would not take a bottle).  I didn't get all the way numb.  I basically said "screw it" and clenched my fists because I didn't want him to wait longer to eat and it wasn't as bad as having hyper stimulation of the uterus during labor.

I had all four of mine pulled (plus a molar) with just the local. None were impacted and I was out of there in about 20 minutes. The last root canal I had was waaaaaay worse!

  • They had to break my wisdom teeth while they were still embedded in my jaw to get them out. They told me they WOULD NOT knock me out, but I am sensitive to pain meds, so I stayed up all night before my appointment and as soon as that painkiller hit me I was out like a light.

I looked like Shrek for a week from all of the bruising on the lower half of my face, and the oral surgeon did some weird shit with his stitching. Stitched the inside of my cheek to my gums on one side. Weird ass.

  • I'm definitely with those who learned their lessons from not going to the dentist for too long. Cost me two root canals, one of which was quite painful. Now I'm all for regular teeth-cleaning, just for the money alone...

I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed with local anaesthesia, wasn't that bad. But I guess I was lucky they weren't in any complicated positions.

You are a brave, brave soul. I was knocked out for my wisdom teeth removal but the root canal I had was easy as pie. Very little pain, no complications. I feel bad when people say they've had painful root canals because mine was so easy! Now when I had to have surgery to pull down a couple of teeth, that's another story..
  • I went through a similar thing, didn't go for even LONGER and was completely terrified but finally ended up in such horrible pain I was forced to go with no insurance. Turned out I had 4 wisdom teeth I didn't even know about that were too crowded so I have to get them out. Started with one side (one was infected, causing the pain) and still need to get the other side done, and a cleaning and a couple fillings. Like someone else said they were amazed that my teeth weren't in worse condition but yes I do brush them like crazy thank goodness. I just got insurance too, so I need to get another appt set up.

To anyone who hasn't gone, overcome the fear, you will not regret it!

So I'm going through the scaling and root planing (SRP) right now with my dentist and the hygienist spends about an hour doing everything, she is doing it in four sessions. Ugh. Plus they have to put antibiotics under my gums. It's very expensive. And I still have to look forward to them redoing a cavity fill. I still and always will hate the dentist, but will never let it go like that again.

@ClimbingBrideNY, don't feel bad about your initial reaction, when I went for my consult, I was crying, full out crying, because I was so embarrassed over how long I had gone without going to the dentist. I'm still embarrassed about that, I was in an especially PMS-cry centric mood, so there's that...
  • @kasmith1 I totally get it, I have patients who haven't been in 5, 10 or 20 years. When I was in high school, I saw a dentist who was so bad, the assistant was congratulating me on being one of the few patients who didn't cry because of the pain. (Yes, on reflection, that should have been a bad sign...) If I could get away with it, I would never sit in a dentist's chair again. Unfortunately (fortunately?), I can't get away with it.

I totally get you! I wanted to cry too. And then I wanted to cry again when I saw how nice my teeth looked afterwards.
  • oh and speaking of crying, I actually started crying in the dentists office because I didn't even qualify for the financial assistance I needed to get my infected wisdom tooth out. It was so humiliating, I had to call my fi (then bf) and have him put it on his credit card and pay him back!

So if you go to a dentist that does payment plans, whatever you do, do not assume you can get one. LOL.

  • hmm... you guys may be convincing me to just bite the bullet and go... I never used to be afraid of the dentist when I was younger, because I had great teeth and they would just do a cleaning and tell me how great my teeth were.  Then sometime during college I stopped getting dental insurance and now it's been at least six years and I'm so afraid I'm gonna have a thousand cavities or something >_<

Oh yeah, my teeth look so much better but that initial visit, was AWFUL. Awful but WORTH IT! @manillabar, you should go. We'll be your cheerleaders!
  • I haven't been in about 2.5 years. H hasn't been in I don't know how long.  We just haven't had the money since we got married a year and a half ago. Now, I'm kind of scared to go because I'm afraid of finding out what kind of cavities I have.

Hopefully, in the next few months we'll save up enough money to both go.
  • See if they can work out a payment plan. The longer you wait, the worse it will be!
  • V wasn't knocked out at all when he got his wisdom teeth removed. He had them removed while he was in boot camp. They just numbed his teeth, put a towel over his eyes, and went to work. I would have run away so fast
