GoFundMe strikes again!

A friend just posted a GFM link for another friend who is trying to raise money to buy a bigger house because now they have a (planned, expensively conceived through IVF) new baby. They claim their apartment is too small, cluttered, and dangerous for the wee one. Why did you have a baby then? It's not my job to fund your planned adult expenses! The entitlement. Ugh. This same friend who posted the link recently had to have a GFM of her own because she quit her job to travel the country for 3 months and her car broke down on the return leg and she didn't have the funds to repair it. Some people...

Re: GoFundMe strikes again!

  • Do people not understand saving and (OMG!) emergency funds?
  • Did Daddy finally say NO?
  • People suck.  I really wish basic budgeting/finance was a required high school course.
Don't worry guys, I have the Wedding Police AND the Whambulance on speed dial!
  • That is just completely ridiculous and outrageous. I never really paid too much attention to fundraising sites like GFM, but since I have gotten sick and have some hefty bills coming my way, I now truly detest ignorant and selfish requests such as the above. I save my money and pay my own bills.

  • Ugh, I've recently seen requests on facebook for IVF funding and paying for someone's nursing board exams. Oh, and obtaining a Google Glass! I said sure, when you donate to my hot tub fund :-P It's out of control!! My SO had a funny response to the IVF one - does the largest contributor get to name the kid??

It was when I was in school.    We all had to take a basic business class.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Actually, in many states, it is. I took a class my senior year because back in 05 they made it mandatory that everyone take a family and consumer sciences course. I was pissed because most of it was (in my opinion) fucking stupid, and it was a gen ed course, so there were some real assholes in there. They did have a how to budget component.

As far as the GFM in question is concerned. Fuck that bitch. I have no problems with people going through IVF. But it's fucking expensive. Don't go through IVF and claim you're broke or you need financial assistance. If you wanted to be a parent soo bad, you could have adopted or fostered a child in need which would be less expensive, but instead you decided you had to create your own little designer baby. You made a choice to go through IVF, it's not like you had a surprise baby, this has been planned. If that apartment was fine when you started IVF, it's fine now. I also realize that GFM was started by a friend, but still, thats messed up.

    Edited because, paragraphs. They're important.

  • It was started by the parents actually, the friend was just boosting the signal. Gag.
  • How much are they up to?

The egregious GFM I saw was a mom made one for her daughter who was graduating from college. Mom sent around an email to family, requesting they donate because the daughter was going to London to celebrate and she wanted to make sure she had fun money to spend. When no one donated she started berating people on FB to donate.

Dude, I give money as a graduation gift, I don't need a site to take 5% for me. I can stuff cash in a card.

On the other hand, this was a nice gesture, as was the followup by the groom-to-be.  http://www.gofundme.com/9zzc58

All of this.  People can conceive babies any way they wish... it's none of my business.  But to spend all that money to conceive a child only to decide that you need to ask your friends for help to get a new home to raise the child in?  I'm not saying it's ok to have a gofundme for an unplanned pregnancy, but I'd understand that A LITTLE bit more (although still super tacky).

Pay for things yourself! I have a guy on my FaceBook that was pimping his GoFundMe for his vacation to NYC. Uh, no. Save up for one yourself, like a real grown up.

  • Those annoying me, I have someone on my fb who made one for her son for his hockey camp, I'd check every now and then to see if anyone helped them. All the while she's putting up pics of trucks they are considering buying.
  • Soooo this is on the front page of GFM.

I'm not trying to be an asshole because I'm all about saving children, but there can't possibly be a surgery that exists that costs 2 million dollars.

I can't even handle this kind of crap anymore!!  I just want to echo the statements made by people, if you can't afford to house the baby you're making, don't have one!!

I had a friend on FB talking constantly about her and her new husband trying to have a baby, and then one day she posted that she hated how long the wait was in the WIC office.. uh...?? You're purposely having another baby when you know you'll need to be on assistance for it?? Wth?

It drives me nuts because I would LOVE to have another baby but it's not in my financial plan right now so it pisses me off watching people have no regard for it and just expecting others to help foot the bill.

I'm in medical research. My lab does pre-clinical research. We've been looking into doing a clinical trial and the costs for doing this is in the 10s-100s of million dollars. I've never heard of the patients paying some of the costs to be able to participate in the trial, so I'm not really sure about that GFM, but the costs of research are insanely expensive.

I know an engaged couple promoting their HoneyFund.

About a week ago, they created a GFM because apparently the groom-to-be has a disorder and, according to them, his workplace doesn't believe him and everyone thinks he's faking it to get pain meds. Okay, that may be true, it may not be. But let's review the happy couple's history, shall we?
    • You are on government assistance.
    • You are getting married and created a HF.
    • A week later, you created a GFM to help with your medical bills (see below for kicker).
    • You just bought yourself ANOTHER tattoo yesterday.

^^ This. I read about this on CNN the other day. The cost is to fund the trial for multiple patients I believe, not just this one little girl. I don't know if that makes it any better.
  • Some people who have babies don't even have a small cluttered apartment. Many families have the street. So....

  • Since getting married of course we keep getting ask when do we plan to have kids? My response; "house first!" I hate our apartment and cannot imagine raising a child there, so we are in the process of purchasing a home before we can even consider starting a family.

That makes sense. Rare diseases don't tend to get a lot of research funding from government, have dedicated charities (like cancer or Alzheimer's) and not much pharmaceutical investment since so few people are affected, which makes it extremely difficult to develop and test treatments. This GFM doesn't bother me AS LONG AS the money is all going to research costs.

  • Where did we get so lost, socially? Can people really not see the difference between raising funds for a cause and blatantly asking for cash so you can have All The Things?

I am not morally opposed to GoFundMe or KickStarter, but I feel like they're one of those things that you wait for someone else to make on your behalf. Or that you use to try to fund your start-up charity for at-risk youth--something that doesn't merely benefit YOU. How is that not OBVIOUSLY tacky, and offensive to people everywhere who struggle and save and go without without expecting other people to pick them up?

  • I'm going to start a GFM page every day around lunch time bc I'm hungry and packing my lunch is lame. I don't have any cash and people should feel bad and buy me sammiches!! Seriously, that's how life works right???

Who wants to buy me lunch? I only need $8 to get a burrito :-9

I mean, you could go to Taco Bell and get a $3 burrito, but you're special so you deserve a better quality burrito.
