  • Told my mom, she asked why it was rude.

  • FI got me a ring with garnets, which is EXACTLY what I wanted - nothing irreplaceable and something small because I've never worn jewelry daily.  It still feels weird on my hand because I went almost 28+ years without any bling anywhere.  His parents kept insisting that I "couldn't want something like that" and tried to steer him toward the $5-7k diamond rings his brother got bullied into buying.

There are just some people out there that equate love = $$ and clearly, if he didn't get you something cut from the Hope Diamond, he doesn't love you that much.  Or, if he did, he's clearly overcompensating for something, like he doesn't love you that much, for example.  You can't please these asshats.

My boss also said nothing under 2 carets is love. Ugh.

  • That bird gif is giving me MAJOR ISSUES. I recognize if from the saddest most awful animal special I've ever seen and that bird is a MONSTER AND I HATE HIM.

Why do you hate the bird? I'm so intrigued now.
  • I have a tiny diamond and I love it. We discussed if a ring was necessary and how important it was. We concluded that we wanted a ring- but not enough to spend a ton on it.

My boss has a 2.5 ct rock and I'm surrounded by huge diamonds every day. However, we decided that updating the kirchen and saving for a wedding was more important.

I wouldn't mind a big rock someday though!

  • Those people are so rude!!
The worst part is it doesn't end once you are married! Everyone kept telling me what kind of wedding band I should get and all this stuff. It was super annoying.

I had people look disappointed when I showed my wedding band [that I picked out] and it's basically one of those really small bands meant for stacking, with tiny tiny diamonds on it. They expected me to get some gigantic creation because my now husband happened to pick out larger diamonds for my engagement ring I guess?
It's just really weird to me that anyone even cares about what they're made out of/how big the stones are/what the stones are chemically comprised of/whatever color stones they are.
  • I only care from a scientific standpoint and if anyone ever asked me a question, I'll be glad to answer it! But I still have a lot to learn and I know I should only talk about someones ring if they asked me. I just like being a dork and talking about the process of how the stones are made ha.

Me too! I don't understand why they care.

  • Any ring that you and your FI love is the one for you! Ignore the haters.
    Happiness is an inside job
  • I don't understand why people think it's right for them to give an opinion on your engagement ring....I have never heard any opinions on other pieces of jewelry I've worn. Like, if someone saw my necklace I've never heard "wow that's so big, or wow that's so small....or wow how did you afford that?" But people think it's just fair game to openly discuss your engagement and wedding rings which are the most personal jewelry choices you will ever make.

I wish I could say it ends, but even now that I'm married I still hear "wow that's so big, or are you upgrading for like a 10 year anniversary?" - fuck off! I love my rings! I have a pretty normal 1 carat solitaire that I love and will wear for the rest of my life. No I will not be upgrading...k thanks.

Anytime someone asks how I can afford something I respond one of two ways. Turning tricks on the corner, $10 for a hand job, $20 for a blow job, totally straight faced or "Shot a man in Reno and robbed him blind". Some people can't figure out if I'm joking or not.

Hey don't ask questions you don't want answered.
My response usually involves embezzling from my employer, bank robbery/identity theft, or waiting to cash in on a life insurance policy - with a wink.

  • sophhabobophamagicink @jdluvr06 @blacklace2015I forget where I saw this- I think it was a planet earth/ BBC special. I just literally googled the weirdest combination of words to figure out what it was called - a shoebill stork. (Warning the following story I found really sad and is why I like gasped when I saw the gif. )

So we are watching the special and they are like oh this is a shoebill stork. It just had two babies. Great right? so they are kind of weird looking babies but they are fluffy so I'm just like oh cool, I don't know anything about this bird - time to learn! And the BBC guy starts saying that the parents will only raise one baby bird. And I'm thinking.. but there is two, I see two baby birds. And then the mom starts only feeding the bigger the one. And then the bigger one starts to attack the smaller one and the mom just saunters off like la de da nothing to see here just letting my offspring murder the tiny one. And it was truly aweful. The tinier one seemed really sad and it like tried to appeal to its parents and tried to run away and it was terrible and I was screaming at the camera man to do something. there is more on this bird here http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/20938650 but honestly I'd advise not even knowing more about this stupid bird. I hate him.

That is the saddest thing ever!!!! Stupid fucking bird.

Just cause you're little doesn't mean you aren't useful! And that your bigger sibling can attack and kill you! My little brother is bigger then me, our dad would not allow him to beat me up. I can promise you that!
  • wow nature is harsh as frick!
  • I'm just curious, did it become okay to ask people in a social setting about their age, weight or income also? I was raised to never broach these topics and to always have a firm handle on what is and is not my business. In my lifetime it has never been okay to comment on how much something cost (a home, a vehicle, a wedding) or how someone chooses to spend their income.

OP, so long as some rude person wants to question if your stones are real I'd respond with something like, "Yes, and so are my tits. Who's uncomfortable now?" Of course, you probably can't say that to your boss, which is a damn shame.

Of all the things that will never effect other people someone's bridal jewelry rates really high. Didn't everyone learn in kindergarten if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all? And what ever happened to "it's lovely. wear it in good health and happiness" even when it's the ugliest thing you've ever laid your eyes on just to say something complimentary if you're caught in a position of a newly engaged woman showing off her ring unsolicited? That's a white lie even the ladies of TK could probably get behind. Why do people thinks it's okay to just be mean spirited over such a non-issue as someone else's jewelry? I don't get it.

It's kind of amazing how free people feel to judge what makes you happy.  My cup of tea won't necessarily be yours.  I spent months looking at diamond engagement rings with my FI and when I finally decided to go with what I've always loved (a lovely emerald), holy shitstorm Batman!  The smirks and snide comments made me want to slap some people.  Even my grandma had something to say, "Well sweetheart, if that's truly what you want, then fine.  But I wouldn't want to advertise to the world that my marriage will end up like my ring--breaking abruptly.  Diamonds are for those who want something permanent.  I'm sorry that you don't see marriage that way."  Yes, I know the inclusions in emeralds make them a little more delicate, but FOR REAL???  WTF?

Holy shit balls. Maybe it's too early to let the snaky me out, because I would have totally responded, "Yes, grandma dear, my stone IS representative of my relationship: something out of the ordinary in our time, to be cherished and maintained with the utmost care. Pity you feel that you can abuse your relationship and still have it retain it's sparkle. How is grandpa, btw?"

I have a coworker with a sapphire Ering and it's lovely. I wouldn't want one, but it's right for her, and I would NEVER say anything rude about their engagement ring to anyone! Were all these people raised in barns?

Yeah, this coming from someone who divorced her husband.  Permanent my ass.  Although to be fair, my grandpa was a mean, raging alcoholic (he later died from it), so it was truly the best thing for her to leave him.  But still, you'd think that she, of all people, would understand that a diamond doesn't truly mean anything.  It's the people in the union who make the marriage.
