Wedding Guest Issues Concerning Children

Re: Wedding Guest Issues Concerning Children

  • Do you have a younger cousin or such who you can enlist for babysitting help? I am a former nanny, so when this issue came about for our own wedding, I got in touch with the girl who I handed over a former family to see if she was available. She is going to take care of all the kids (there are 15) at the hotel. Maybe something like this could be a possibility.
Um, one sitter for 15 kids?  As a parent I would absolutely not be okay with that arrangement. As a sitter I would not be okay with that arrangement either.  I hope you are paying her a whole lot of money.

Wouldn't it depend on the sitter whether or not he or she can handle 15 kids?  Look at teachers - they have to handle classrooms of 20 children or more.  15 kids might be a breeze.  It also depends on the kids - what if a number of them are older, and can therefore help with younger ones?  If I were a parent I would ask about this, but I wouldn't automatically not be okay with the arrangement without asking further questions.

And what if those older kids don't want to help with the younger ones?

Also, have you ever heard teachers bitch and complain about having classes with so many kids? Fifteen children is a lot to handle for just one person, especially if they vary in ages so that multiple activities are needed for various ages just to keep everyone happy and sane.  And for kids to be stuck in a hotel room for 5+ hours is just asking for craziness to happen.

Unlike day cares and classrooms that have toys and activities and such to keep kids occupied and happy, hotel rooms do not.  So the amount of shit that you would need to bring so that kids can be kept happy would be ridiculous.  My 4 year old niece plays with a ton of toys at once, there is no way she would be happy sitting for 5 hours watching a few movies or just having one toy to play with and share with 15 other kids.

Finally, think about those guests in adjacent rooms to the hotel room where these children will be watched.  I don't think they will appreciate the loud noises that will most likely occur when you get that many kids together.

Day cares have ratio limits and it sure as hell ain't 15 to 1.
Also, they don't allow just one person to be working.  Even if it is the end of the night and only one kid is left there will still be 2 staff members available.

  • Yeah there's a big difference between one trained professional having 30 5th graders in a classroom, seated at desks and expected to be quiet. 15 kids of various ages on a weekend night crammed into a hotel room with one amateur babysitter sounds like a nightmare. My 3 cousins in one room is a noise violation waiting to happen even when their parents ARE there.

Are they going to get paid, then, too?
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Why would a younger cousin, presumably invited as a guest, want to "work" the wedding for free?  They were invited to have fun with the other guests-not to look after someone else's children.

I've had to do this quite often. HATED IT.
