NWR: Just...ugh.

So FI and I went to a store on Friday night to exchange an item.  The store asked for my ID for the return (which they did not need since I had my receipt) and did not give it back to me.  I realized this on the way home (they were closed), so I called and told them to hold it until the morning.  I go back the next morning and am told it was cut up the night before by the manager who was told I would be back to get it.

I used to work for the company and I know their store policy is to hold the ID in the safe for 30 days, not cut it up that night.  I've been calling everyone in the chain from the company that I know to get an exact copy of the policy that they broke so that they will reimburse me for my new ID that I now have to go get, because ya know, DMVs are hella fun.  Everyone I've spoken to from the company, as well as the police, have all agreed that the store was not allowed to do that, by store policy or legally.

I had to file a police report about it, which doesn't file for 5-7 days and I think I need it to get a new ID number.  You can get a replacement without it but it would have the same number...I don't trust that the store actually destroyed it well enough so I want a new number and you need a police report to do that.  I called our DMV, which is not open Mondays but they have a general line, and he said I can use my case number as my report, so hopefully that's true!

I've had one hell of a fun morning calling 50 different people, so someone please pass me some wine.

Yikes!  What a mess. I'd be so stressed out.

ETA: I'm having to jump through some major hoops trying to get a replaced car title that just make me want to junk punch the TX DMV.

The worst part is, I'm travelling this weekend out of state to a bachelorette party and I need my ID.  I get carded almost everywhere, despite being well over 21. :/

And ugggggh with car titles, too!  I had a whole mess with mine when we moved b/c my title was in my old state and under my parents' names b/c I bought it at 16, but the lien release was in my name since I paid for it.  They legitimately thought I had stolen my own vehicle.

  • I am just stuck on the part that they cut your ID up! That is beyond ridiculous. Are they a corporate chain? I would be calling corporate on that shit.

  • I hate dealing with new driver's licenses.  Especially, the hoops you have to jump through to get one when you move to a new state. I really think you should just be able to present your license from the old state and something with your new address on it.

I am sorry you are dealing with this. I don't know why it would take that long fo the police report though. They should be available within a few day maximum.

Oh I have been calling corporate all morning.  They're just as shocked as I was!

And I hated getting a license in this state the first time.  You have to do it within 30 days of moving, yet you're supposed to bring in two of your not-yet-existing utility bills?  And also your birth cert, SS card, passport, insurance policy...

I think with getting my replacement, I just need like 3 things instead of the original 10.

  • That is ridiculous they would cut it up after one day.  I can't even wrap my mind around that.

I'm not sure either, but I'm guessing it's because I filed it in the city perimeter and they have like thousands of crimes every day.

I filled out paperwork and put my last name on it and then my maiden name in parenthesis behind that b/c I knew the title was in my maiden name. I gave them ID, lien release from the bank. You know, official legal type stuff. They sent it all back saying they need a statement from me saying that Addie NewName and AddieOldName are the same person. Just a statement. Doesn't need to be notarized or in any way have proof that it's legit. Just a statement from me saying, "Yo! This is me!" How is that different from the maiden name in parenthesis on the paperwork, you stupid assholes?!

  • ...That's incredibly stupid that they cut up your ID. I'd be ripping some people's heads off, for sure.
  • I hate to say it, but you should tweet them or post on their FB wall. Often that is the only way one can have the corporate office get back in touch. That is so ridiculous!

I don't know the person who closed that night, but I had the police officer watch the security tapes in the office of them cutting it.  I've been trying to call him since just to see how much it was actually cut.

I tweeted at the corporate support, but they didn't answer.  I've so far had my issue escalated up the chain 6 times.  For now I'm waiting on the call for the what they're going to do.  The store claims that policy changed from 30 days of holding IDs to just til the end of day, but I know they're lying.  The police officer told me that if they refuse to reimburse me, I should take it to small claims court.

In the state I used to live in they could pull up your old license on the computer and see it was you so getting a new one was pretty easy.  Except, they couldn't give it to you there.  It had to be made off site and mailed to you so you got a piece of paper that gave you the authority to drive for X number of days.

I hope getting a new one is easy.  He said my number is still in the system in case I were to get pulled over or what have you.  Only thing is, I'm requesting a new DL # b/c I don't trust that the store cut it up small enough or didn't copy it first.  They lied to me about everything else, so I wouldn't be surprised!

It was a fucking shitshow getting my license in GA because of that. I moved in with my grandparents, so I had nothing. I had to wait until I opened a bank account and had to bring a copy of my health insurance declaration. Then I had to wait SIX HOURS to get my license. Fucking nightmare.

Getting my car tags was a MESS too. My mom was listed first on the title, so the lady started giving me all manner of bullshit because my mother wasn't present (even though my name is on the title too), so I had to get a copy of my mom's license to them... and then she flipped shit because my mother's license didn't show our old GA address that we hadn't lived at in 11 years. Dipshit. The next lady was much better about all that shit but it still took ALL DAY.

NH was less problematic about the license, but the nasty bitch who works at the town office was well... a nasty bitch about getting my tag shit together. I had all of the relevant stuff filled out, two checks, etc and she still was a douche about sending my stuff in.

    Blech.

So do I.  For one more month.  You have my sympathies for what you are about to deal with.  My husband is military and not a GA resident. He had to yell at like 3 different offices before he could get a driver's license and register a vehicle without becoming a GA resident.

  • Ugh. My husband had a hell of a time with his license, too, before we got a house here. While we looked, we were living with a friend of his. He bought a new vehicle and had it registered in VA, and he wanted to go ahead and get a VA license, but they wouldn't let him have his license b/c he had no "official" mail (like bills) with his VA address on it. So his boss sent him a pay stub to the address we were staying at to try and help out. They rejected it b/c the address was on a label and not printed directly on the envelope.

Two years ago I moved to CA. I just had to re-take the written test and bring in my old license and passport. They mailed me my license so I didn't need proof of address. I just moved to AZ. Took me about 1.5 hours. Stood in line to get pic taken and pay 25 bucks. Walked out with a paper license, real one comes in the mail. Needed passport and old license. Not too bad. My worry is the change of name has to be done within 10 days of changing my name, but I won't be back in AZ until 15 days, so I guess I better call the DMV to get that figured out at some point.

ETA: OP that is ridiculous. I worked at MCDs, things stayed in the safe if we couldn't find a contact number. Nothing cut up the day of.

She tried to say it's "just like cutting up someone's credit card-it's for their safety!" and the cop said, "No, it's not at all like a credit card.  That's just...that's just stupid."

A credit card you can call and tell your bank it was stolen and they'll cancel it.  This is my fucking identifying document.

And the company still hasn't gotten back to me, saying it can take several days.  And the cop also has yet to return my calls about exactly how it was cut up and what happened with that trash.  So essentially I'm still pissed as hell.
    image

  • What the... I just... I can't even. That is ri-god-damn-diculous.

    image
    image
  • Wow, I can't believe she would cut up an ID. I mean, they use to cut up credit cards when they were denied but they dont even do that anymore (or did they only do that on tv?). I would be beyond pissed too.

  • What gets me about the whole thing is you called them and told them you were coming back.  They hadn't held it for several days without finding out contact info from you or anything and could have possibly been worried about protecting your information.  You contacted them.  So they had no good reason to cut it up.

The DMV is the crappiest place I can think of spending any period of time...including a dumpster full of broken glass.
