NWR: YES! I got a second (and final) interview...

... for a position that I DESPERATELY want in another department! It's infinitely more interesting and challenging than my current position, and also $$$$$$.

Now, for the hard part. Should I tell my boss that I am interviewing for another department? She is known to be really vindictive and i'm worried that she will hold it against me in the event that I don't get it, and continue reporting to her.

  • Congrats!!!!

In my work, you are required to let your current supervisor know if you are considering a different position in the same company. I would check what the rules are. If there aren't any, I wouldn't say anything.

Oh, I didn't even think about that! I don't think we have a rule like that here, but I will definitely check.

    ETA: Also, thank you!

Ditto Sara. I've been required to tell my supervisor if I was interested in/applying for any other positions within our company or sister companies, at every place I've worked (which is 4).

ETA and congrats and good luck!

I am also interviewing for a different position at work, and it didn't even occur to me to tell my current boss about it. When HR scheduled the interview with me, they suggested I tell my boss so that he didn't find out on accident.

If I knew my boss were vindictive I'd be tempted to not tell her anything. BUT that could also make it worse if she somehow found out about it -- because then she'd be mad that you might leave AND that you didn't tell her. Tough situation!
This is true. I feel like i'm screwed either way, so MUST GET THIS JOB.

Huh. I've never been required to do this. I'll have to look into the HR policies here.

    Thank you!
