Chit Chat

I just went $200,000 into debt...

We bought a house!!! Woo! I'm so excited... we get posession August 15th (after we get back from the Honeymoon). There is the cutest little kids room with pink stripes and chocolate brown bubbles on the wall. I told FI that room must not be touched. We will save it for any (hopefully) potential daughters that may come down the road. Lol. Just had to share my excitement.

And.... this is the last week of school! I've been moving for the last two weeks. It will be nice to be finally settled (at least till we move down the block and into the new house) in FI's hometown with him. Right now I'm sleeping on the floor of my apartment. :P

  • Congrats!
  • congrats.  It's always exciting buying your first home.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Congratulations!!!

  • @inkdancer, the family moving out is a family with 5 small children. They would be able to move out in the next couple weeks but our wedding is in a month and I will be super busy setting up my new classroom then heading to my hometown to see my brother a week before the wedding because he is having surgery. It would be too much for us to try to move into and set up a new house all on top of that so we figured we would give the family time to get organized and then we could move in as things for us start to settle down a bit too.

  • So fun! I am also insanely jealous. We just lost a house we bid on and now we have to go back to the drawing board.

I would rather take a fork to the eye.

How does that work if you've closed on the house and they still live there?  In Minnesota that's a huge no-no for insurance reasons, because technically once the ink is on the paper you're legally responsible for the house.

I know every state is different so I'm just curious!

I live in Canada. We fill out the paperwork, choose a posession date and then it is closed. The posession date is the day you start paying your mortgage. The people living there are then responsible for the house until the posession date agreed upon and have until then to move out.

Yeah, we bid on another house but he rejected it and so we went to view this other house the next day. In the meantime, the guy reconsidered our offer and decided to accept our conditions but he had already passed the deadline and we liked this other house better! So really, we had 2 choices.

  • Congrats!! The debt gets even funner when you need a new roof or heating system! lol

That's pretty cool how that possession thing works though, that would be kinda nice if we had that in the states and didn't have to move out your shit before you even close. If you're trying to sell your house and need the money to buy another house you always get screwed with not being able to move your shit from the old house to the new house yet. Because you don't own it yet until you sell yours and you can't sell yours without taking your stuff out lol.

I keep crossing my fingers that this other offer falls through. Our market (NYC suburbs) is super competitive.

Yeah, our market isn't overly competitive, just over priced. Years ago you could buy houses there for like 40,000 and it would be a gorgeous house! Now, it's so hard to find housing because the town is in the middle of oil country so you have all the riggers and construction workers trying to find housing that they jacked the prices up like crazy. Our house was a steal compared to some of the others in the area and those houses are asking waaaay more and aren't half as nice! Sad thing is that we're in a small town of about 2,000 (if that), not very close to big city centres, and close to the US Border.

  • Congratulations!  How exciting!

We're looking for a house too, and just withdrew a bid on a house because the a**hole seller is basically gaming the system and won't let us know if he accepts our offer for 6 days... he says he has "multiple offers" coming in and wants to see if he can get a better deal.

We've looked at 18 homes and are going to see 2 more today.  We're in a hurry to find something because I'm due in 2 days with our first child.  I was soooo hoping not to have to house hunt with a newborn!

That really sucks! See, here when a person puts in an offer they are given 24 hours to accept or counter and then the offer is off the table. That's how we got out of our offer on the other house so quickly.

here, too- it is insane. They accepted best and final offers at 5pm on Monday. The top bid had till Wednesday to execute the inspection or they lost it. We were hoping they would (since we are 2nd). There are a million ways these people could lose this house. Also, LOL to $200,000 being overpriced.....I WISH. Seriously, the NYC suburbs are a whole new brand of crazy when it comes to this. I don't even want to say out loud how much we bid on a house that still needed a decent amt of work.

And yeah, monkeysip- we wanted to nail this down now because we want to start trying to get PG in the spring. This shopping nonsense is for the birds- I want to be settled and happy by the time babies get here. I never want to look for a house again.

  • Woohoo! That's awesome. We're in the process too. We signed a contract on June 5th. We close on Monday! I think we're finally close enough to closing that I'm no longer worried about it falling apart. I am so in love with the house and can't wait to start moving our stuff in next week.

Our poor cats won't know what to do with themselves. The new house is so much bigger than our current apartment that we're giving the cats their own room. And we'll have a yard! Eek!
