    Congratulations!  How exciting!

We're looking for a house too, and just withdrew a bid on a house because the a**hole seller is basically gaming the system and won't let us know if he accepts our offer for 6 days... he says he has "multiple offers" coming in and wants to see if he can get a better deal.

We've looked at 18 homes and are going to see 2 more today.  We're in a hurry to find something because I'm due in 2 days with our first child.  I was soooo hoping not to have to house hunt with a newborn!
That really sucks! See, here when a person puts in an offer they are given 24 hours to accept or counter and then the offer is off the table. That's how we got out of our offer on the other house so quickly.
here, too- it is insane. They accepted best and final offers at 5pm on Monday. The top bid had till Wednesday to execute the inspection or they lost it. We were hoping they would (since we are 2nd). There are a million ways these people could lose this house. Also, LOL to $200,000 being overpriced.....I WISH. Seriously, the NYC suburbs are a whole new brand of crazy when it comes to this. I don't even want to say out loud how much we bid on a house that still needed a decent amt of work.

And yeah, monkeysip- we wanted to nail this down now because we want to start trying to get PG in the spring. This shopping nonsense is for the birds- I want to be settled and happy by the time babies get here. I never want to look for a house again.
Haha, yeah it all depends on location our town is definitely no NYC suburb so I can only imagine what you have to deal with! Houses in the 2 major cities in this province can run anywhere from 500,000 to almost 1 mil. Considering the province is flat and seemingly middle of nowhere that is overpriced but it is certainly no Toronto or Vancouver, that's for sure! 200,000 for a house in an extremely small redneck town nowhere near any large cities is considered pretty crazy here though especially considering the fact that years ago these houses costed like 20,000-40,000. I'm pretty sure FI's parent's acreage could probably go for close to 1 mil easy now. They could probably make some decent money if they rented out their land rights for drilling purposes too.

  • Congratulations!!!
  • We closed on June 11th and take possession August 5th.

We did a leaseback, so essentially the day of closing we became landlords. They're paying us $54 per day to live there. Now, if anything went wrong with the house, we'd be responsible, but they also paid for a home warranty for us. Plus, their rent covers our mortgage payment, so that's nice.

I'm sure more sellers would be open to a leaseback if you mentioned them. For us, our apartment lease doesn't end until August 31st and the sellers wanted to be able to have time to move and look for their new home without having to buy/sell simultaneously. They have kids and it would have been a difficult way to start the summer for sure. It helped us both out by renting it back to them for 55 days. Most lenders won't allow leasebacks for longer than 60 days.

But, in spite of that... Why am I so driven to find it? A voice calls to me... It says, 'Search for Paradise.' " - Kiba, Wolf's Rain

So fun! I am also insanely jealous. We just lost a house we bid on and now we have to go back to the drawing board.

I would rather take a fork to the eye.
Yeah, we bid on another house but he rejected it and so we went to view this other house the next day. In the meantime, the guy reconsidered our offer and decided to accept our conditions but he had already passed the deadline and we liked this other house better! So really, we had 2 choices.
I keep crossing my fingers that this other offer falls through. Our market (NYC suburbs) is super competitive.
Yeah, our market isn't overly competitive, just over priced. Years ago you could buy houses there for like 40,000 and it would be a gorgeous house! Now, it's so hard to find housing because the town is in the middle of oil country so you have all the riggers and construction workers trying to find housing that they jacked the prices up like crazy. Our house was a steal compared to some of the others in the area and those houses are asking waaaay more and aren't half as nice! Sad thing is that we're in a small town of about 2,000 (if that), not very close to big city centres, and close to the US Border.
    Congrats!

If you want to talk about over priced, come to Vancouver. $200,000 MIGHT buy you a 600 square foot condo in a sketchy area. To actually get a stand alone house you're looking at $600,000+, 50km outside the city. It's fracking ridiculous trying to buy here.

Oh, don't I know! My family used to live in Vancouver. Hence why I said it's certainly no Vancouver. Lol

Yeesh! And I thought Toronto was bad! In my parents' area, 80yr old semi-detached homes that haven't been updated since ww2 are going for almost $700,000. It's ridiculous.

Our area, 2hr east of Toronto, homes are around what you're seeing, @CamiSelene. But coming from Toronto, everything seems like such a bargain!!

    Congrats on the house!!

Just to let you know I didn't "love" that for the a**hole seller thing.
    This:
Due in two days! Hooray! So excited for you. Be sure and let us know who arrives, and how much you're crazy in love with them.

Homes in my hometown are similar to what you're seeing. It was such a PITA when DH and I were in my hometown for our wedding and people were asking us if we were saving up to buy a house. When we said no, they told us to start watching our pennies. I got so fed up that I just wanted to yell "the average price for a house with a yard in our neighbourhood is one million dollars. Saving our pennies isn't going to help us afford that." Welcome to Vancouver where the middle class can't afford to own a house.

That is us, too. FI grew up around here and never wants to leave the NYC area. I keep telling him that, in my hometown, you can't BUY a house for a million bucks- they don't exist. Here, you can't one for less than that!

You can buy a house for a million in my hometown - but it comes with at least 100 acres of farmable land.
