I'm pretty simple. Dry, dry skin and very fine, greasy hair. I shower at night, put my hair in a towel for a few minutes, gently comb, and let it dry overnight. Saves a lot of heat damage from blow drying and a lot of time in the morning! Unfortunately my hair is SO greasy that I much shampoo my roots daily or I look (and feel) like a greasy mess. So most nights I just wash the roots and let the shampoo at least freshen up the rest of my hair as it rinses out. Condition the bottom few inches of my hair daily (conditioning your scalp daily can cause more oil). I really only shampoo my whole head a couple times a week.
It's not the conditioner that's causing more oil, it's the shampoo. Frequent washing overdries your scalp, so it overcompensates by creating even more oil. If you can ease into washing your hair less frequently, or even washing it with a cleansing conditioner rather than shampoo, I bet over time you'll see less oil start to build up.
I have tried and my hair does not cooperate. It sill gets super greasy and then I look like I don't shower. What in the world is a cleansing conditioner? Like a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner?
Sort of but not really... shampoo+conditioner is mostly shampoo with a little conditioner added, and this is mostly conditioner with gentle cleansing ingredients added. I like this one:

Wen and Hair One are two of the "fancier" brands, but I couldn't bear to spend the money on them.

When I first tried weaning myself off of washing my hair every day, it was definitely greasy the day after. I just used a little dry shampoo, threw it in a ponytail and hoped nobody noticed. It's great now though, and I can go 5 or 6 days without washing it if I need/want to.
I wish I could do that. I've tried several times to do the "training" and to use the baking soda/vinegar shampoo, but I have seborrheic dermatitis and if I go more than two days without washing my scalp breaks out into oily, crusy, itchy, gross patches.

I also have waist length hair now so I wash my scalp every other day with either head and shoulders original, and neutrogena T Gel shampoo...and once a week with my medicine. I use Aussie conditioner on everything from the nape of my neck down every time I shower and once a week use their "3 Minute Miracle" deep conditioner.

I use Origins VitaZing with SPF on my face everyday for concealer and then use their Night-A-Mins moisturizer at night. Yay for Origins! I love it.

  • I use Witch Hazel, a salicylic acid moisturizer and SPF 60 on my face every morning.  I think my acne is calming quite a bit, and at 31, I get carded at the liquor store every single time.  Occasionally I use a tea tree oil clay mask I have and I exfoliate a few times a week

I got crazy compliments on my hair when I was getting a trim on Saturday.  It's long and fine.  I wash it at night (not every night, every 3rd night or so), make sure it's about 60% dry when I lay down and it becomes so volumized when I wake up in the morning.  I spray coconut oil or argan oil on the ends to keep them healthy looking.  I only use a wide tooth comb on it as well.

I wash my pillow cases often too (long dirty hair + not washing pillows = icky acne).

I wash my makeup brushes with baby shampoo and cetaphil every other day, or even daily if I have a breakout.

Yeah I still get split ends and a few zits but I think these things are keeping disaster relatively at bay.

Oh my gosh, awesome! I can do $7! As for dry shampoo...HAHAHA!!! I am a brunette and I borrowed my mom's dry shampoo once. It made my roots look gray! My mom and I tried rubbing it in, spreading it out with a brush, blotting it with a damp cloth...nothing worked. I tried a pony tail but it didn't quite cover it all. I wound up having to take a shower and wash my hair (which I didn't have time for in the first place) and well...we were very late going wherever we were going that day. To this day my mom teases me and offers me that bottle of dry shampoo when I visit. I will definitely try that product though!
I had the same problem with dry shampoo! All it did was make me look grey.
  • I wash my face with washcloth and estee lauder face cleaner, tone with witch hazel and spot treat with tea tree oil.  My biggest recommendations are, if you use a washcloth, wash it regularly, I change mine every day (as in I wash with it in the morning then at night then I wash it).

Same goes for pillow cases, your hair and skin deposit oils on them while you sleep, then your face sits in those oils and it can cause break outs.  I own extra (extra extra) pillow cases so I can was them all the time.  I also recommend silky pillow cases because they are supposed to be less snaggy on your hair.

I don't blow dry unless there is an event and I need my hair dried quickly and I dye my hair with henna.  I am usually pretty minimalist with my makeup. Usually I just use sunscreen and something to make my face look a little more matte, darken my eyebrows and wear lip stain.

I wash my hair every day or every other day because I run a lot and it makes my hair gross.  Any other workout doesn't necessarily require that I wash my hair but running does for some reason.  But I only wash my scalp and condition my tips. My hair is long so its easy to differentiate between the two parts- I put a little shampoo on my scalp and put conditioner from shoulders down.  I use a gentle all natural shampoo but I can't remember what it is called right now.

And I drink a ton of water and a cup of Pukka detox tea every night before bed (yogi also makes a detox tea, I just like Pukka better).  I don't know if it makes a difference but I feeeeel like it does.
  • @kimches @climbingbrideny I've had good luck with Batiste 'blush' dry shampoo.

I have super fine dark brown hair that gets extremely greasy if I get even moderately warm, so I have to wash my hair every day. During the summer, I shower when I get home because I hate being all manky after getting into a hot car. So in the morning before work, I part my hair into sections, and do a couple good sprays of dry shampoo at the root. The key is holding the can a good ways away from your head so you get good distribution of the powder instead of looking like this guy:

I also swear by 100% pure products (their acne cream and face wash are the best things ever)

I wash my face every other day with this face wash (click) and rarely ever break out. When I do, I hit it with the spot treatment. I use the neutrogena alcohol-free toner after I get out of the shower, and once that's dried, I go over my face with rose water. Smells nice, cools you off, and is $8 for a bottle.

Then, I use this stuff at night:

I don't wear makeup very often, and when I do, my goal is almost always to go about 3/4 Bianca Del Rio/Sexy Barbie Clown. My makeup collection is fucking nuts, but I haven't added to it since buying my DiorShow mascara.

I have eczema that makes my forearms/hands look like I have poison ivy during the winter. I use the cetaphil restoraderm body wash every other day and it keeps the ick down to a minimum. I also have fucking keratosis pilaris and I HATE IT. HATE. I stick with Clinique Sparkle Skin for exfoliation, but I am going to get some of that DermaDoctor KP Duty scrub soon. UGH.

  • @beethery I'll have to get the cetaphil body wash you recommended for FI. He has eczema and it gets worse in the winter time as well and he has a hard time finding much to keept it at bay. He goes through tubes and tubes of cortisone cream but I don't think it does much.

Cortisone also doesn't help my eczema.  It stings.  And cortisone will actually give you its own kind of rash, sort of red and bumpy, if you overuse it.

I put my fancy night cream for my face wherever I have an eczema patch.  Keeping it really hydrated helps.  Also argan oil.

  • Coconut Oil and Tree Tea Oil are my must haves.  I also use Evian face spray as a toner. I have no idea why the spray water works, but it's helped my skin.
  • I'm a clinque fan girl. I use their exfoliate mask in the shower and their cleansing pump everyday. My face gets super oily so I have to make sure I wash my face. I hardly ever get breakouts and they mostly happen when I'm on my period. I put on some sunscreen since I'm pale and my family is prone to cancer.

For makeup I use makeup brushes and no foundation. I use powder instead. It feels super light and looks very natural on me. I put on blush, eye shadow, and a lipstain. I try to not wear that much eye makeup since my eyes are sensitive.

I have to wash my hair everyday. It gets very oily and greasy quickly. I use color safe/sulfate free shampoos and conditioners. I add a little bit of product in my hair and rarely use my blow dryer. I only blow dry my bangs and let the rest of my hair air dry.

I don't have much secrets ha.

@beethery, I love Diorshow mascara.... I swear by that shit 100%!!!

I, too, have tried "training" my hair to go without washes... a year in I am still trying. Every other day I'm in ponytails and even my ponytails look like a hot greasy mess because my hair is so fine and light blonde so the grease is even more noticeable. :( *sigh*

ETA: I use olive oil to remove eye-makeup. It's a miracle worker and you don't need much. I also use an olive oil/dishsoap mixture to clean my make-up brushes which work like a charm.

  • I'll have to read everything in greater detail tomorrow, and add my 2centts, but as far as dry shampoos, I think the Bed Head is the best.  Yes, it's $$$$$ but it has the most volume and leaves less of a powdery residue- I'm also a brunette.

Also, the trick with dry shampoo is to use a bunch overnight to help absorb oil and give you some body, then a bit more again in the morning and let that sit on your hair for a few minutes before you work it into your hair with your fingers or a brush.  That's wht helps to relaly get rid of any powdery residue you might see.

  • Oil cleansing method here also! I do have random bumps, but I started this 7 years ago because oil was the onlything that didn't hurt my extremely painful cystic acne. I was about to try Accutane, that's how bad it was.

Conditioner washing here also. But, you do not need special conditioner! Good old cheap Suave works perfectly. I dilute it, scrub my scalp with it, detangle my hair, apply my heavier conditioner to my ends and shower away. Rinse at end and I've got super shiny, soft hair.

Argan oil straight is my hair oil. The gunk in the store is just silicone with a little oil.

    Always apply SPF 50 daily.

I use a cucumber based eye cream. Paula's Choice can jump off a cliff, this eye cream is amazing and I have no wrinkles or problems.

Castor oil on your lashes works as well as the prescription stuff without the side effects.

My feet are a scary mess because I live in composite toed work boots. I use the Baby Foot Peel once a month, then the vinegar Listerine soak weekly. Otherwise, my feet are so built up, I click if I walk barefoot.

What brand of Argan oil do you use, then?  I use it every time I wash my hair, but if my stuff is crap, I need a new supplier!!!

I use Watts Organics.  It's only $9 and lasts forever: http://smile.amazon.com/Watts-Beauty-ArganGoldTM-Certified-Organic/dp/B005GXVVH2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404404217&sr=8-1&keywords=watts+argan

The pure argan oil is too much for my hair, personally.  I use it on my skin.

  • Make sure to use suncreen on your face, chest and arms, EVERY DAY.  The most sun damage we have is always on our left side.  When You visit countries where they drive on the right, they are more prone to wrinkles on their right side.  We see the  most daily sun damage in our work commutes.
Drink lots of water. It maintains a healthy weight and also removes toxins from your body. I have been drinking cucumber water to get rid of water weight, as well. Drink less coffee, and eat more greens.
Exfoliate your lips every few days, as well, to slough off dead skin so you don't have chapped lips on your wedding day.  And apply intense moisturizing lip balm after every exfoliation.
Use a good moisturizer on your face.  I am using Lancome lift cream. I swear you can feel it working on the first day.  Apply to your face and neck.  Don't forget to moisturize the rest of your body.
  • So FI kind of makes fun of my face wash routine because she calls it "excessive" but whateves it works for me.

When I get home the first thing I do (after taking off my shoes and usually clothes) is take off my eye make-up, I love the Almay eye make up removing pads, so easy. Then I take face cleansing cloth (I've got the Kirkland brand now, works well) and wipe off my face and neck. Gets off most of my make up but it also just makes me feel fresher and like the grime of the day is gone. When its time for bed, I do a scrub (it's the pink grapefruit Neutrogena one), then tea tree oil face wash, then tea tree oil toner, then tea tree oil moisturizer and finally the tea tree oil spot treatment if I have any pimples or pimples coming up.

I freaking love my tea tree oil stuff. It's the only think I've used that actually works for me in limiting breakouts.

I also wear sunscreen everyday. My morning moisturizer is a Neutrogena one because it has SPF in it. I love Jergens natural glow stuff, so I'll use that but I still put on regular sunscreen too. I'm Irish. I have gotten a sun burn in a car with tinted windows. I'm that Irish. Even with sunscreen on, I still get a nice little tan. I'm that fucking white. So yeah, sunscreen, everyday on any part of my skin that is visible.

I love rice paper blotters for oil/sweat during the day. Keeps the shiny look down.

Now my super weird what the fuck is wrong with you one. I have a lavender scented silicone based lube/massage oil I use in my hair to make it shiny and on my tattoos to make them look good too. Yeah, lube, in your hair. The good lube, not that KY shit. I also love Bed Head products for my hair. I've learned a little goes a very long way on me.

I do wash my hair daily, I've never noticed it be oily or dry. Mostly it's because of the products I put in, I can't imagine leaving those in for several more days.
