NWR- Is this somehow socially acceptable. If so WHY?!

I lust got back from lunch.  The place where we ate is small.  Basic layout- when you walk in there is a long counter to your right and display cases then a short wall on the left.  The space between is about the width of a regular hallway, maybe 4 feet at most.  That area opens into the booths in the back of the room, close together and again, a pretty small space.  We were eating at the counter.  Midway through my meal I felt the waitress behind me struggling to carry the drinks between me and the stroller with 2 adults directly behind me, maybe 2 feet from my back who were changing their baby in the middle of the restaurant!!!!!!!

Is this ok and I somehow didn't know it?  I was so grossed out by what was happening.  There has to be a better place to change your child than the middle of a busy restaurant, right?  Not to mention, how would the health department feel about this?

    With the responses so far. . . . would you have said something?  Luckily, they did it quickly, and there was no offensive odor attached to the situation so I just let it go, but it certainly made my lunch less enjoyable!

    Yes, I would have contacted the manager. I would have made sure they heard my conversation.






    What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

    I probably wouldn't have said anything but I would have given kind of a nasty look at them.  

    I was at a baby shower once and this one guest was sitting on the floor with her baby and proceeded to change him right in the middle of the floor during the gift opening portion and while we were all eating.  My MIL and I just looked at each other with a "is she seriously doing that there?" look.

    I completely forgot about this winner. . . . we were at a wedding where a friend decided to change her daughter at the table while we were finishing up eating, then put the diaper on her finished plate. . . . . I nearly died. 

    I presume I must have blocked that out until just now.

    I had to kick someone out of a coffee shop I worked at for doing this shit.

    Mom placed the baby on the small table and started to get all the changing stuff together, so I went over and very kindly said "We have changing stations in both our restrooms for your convince, if the woman's is occupied I can let you into the men's, they're exactly the same, single use bathrooms", big smile the whole time, being helpful. And she goes "Oh, we're good here, I'm not one of those moms whose all worried about germs" and starts to take off the diaper. So nice me goes and away and I say "Ma'ma I'll have to insist you use one of the changing stations in our bathrooms. We can't have you change a baby on a table in the middle of the restaurant. It's unsanitary", come on I'm spelling it out for you! She responds...well you can imagine it wasn't calm "I'm doing this here and now you will not shut me away in a bathroom, she's just a baby!!!", I was so done. "Poop is poop, doesn't matter if it comes out of you, me, or the baby, it needs to be taken care of in the restroom" she called me a cunt and I told her she needed to leave. She left in a huff and changed the kid on one of the patio tables, which we then bleached the living shit out of.

    Wow.  That's gross and unsanitary.

    I'd report it to the management of that place and if necessary to the health department.  If you can make an anonymous call to them, that's what I'd do.

    I take my son to the bathroom to change him.  If there's no changing table I improvise or take him out to the car.  I will say you get pretty good about changing them without getting anything anywhere but I'm not going to do that in the dining room of a restaurant.  I have changed him on the floors of family and friend's (with their permission) homes.

    The venue we had our wedding at actually didn't have changing tables in the bathrooms. No idea why. My final meeting with the florist was at the venue and my sister and my nephew were with me and he needed to be changed. So my sister improvised and used a bench outside of the bathroom (off in a corner and away from the actual dining area and where any food would be or people eating) and she was still mortified that it wasn't in the bathroom.

    The only time I didn't use the restroom to change a diaper was when son and I were on a plane. I had no clue what to do. It was a poopy diaper and he needed to be changed, and plane restrooms (17 years ago) were not set up to change diapers. I put his blanket on my seat, put him on the blanket, then maneuvered as best as I could so people didn't see. Luckily the flight was very light on people and my entire row was empty. I hope I didn't get any ugly stares. But I couldn't let him sit in that for 2 hour flight.

    I've been to a few places that didn't have changing tables. Or only had them in the women's room which gets DH out of diaper duty.

    I used to wait tables. One time, there was a family who changed the poopiest, smelliest diaper IN THE BOOTH. You could smell it across the place.

    What was worse is that they LEFT IT THERE WHEN THEY LEFT. I was horrified- bad enough to change a diaper in a restaurant, but at least have the decency to take it with you!

    That is disgusting. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if you have your baby in a public place whether they serve food or not, then you should change diapers in the bathrooms. I took my nephews to the zoo this one time and this woman sat down with her toddler on one of the benches for an indoor exhibit and changed her kids diaper. After she got up my nephews tried to sit there and I had to tell them to sit somewhere else. The lady gave me a dirty look. Oh well.

    Back before bf and I were together we worked together and one time his ex changed their daughter, not only her diaper but also her outfit, on one of the tables in the food court.  So she actually put her naked baby on the table in public.  I was so weirded out, and the only reason she changed her clothes is because she wanted her to be wearing a new outfit.  

    Also was going through pictures from when A was a baby and came across pictures of A's grandmother changing her in an aisle at Target on the floor.  And A's mom was taking pictures of her mother doing it.  I was just like really?  If I walked by that at Target I really don't even know what I'd think but I sure as hell wouldn't be changing my baby on the floor in a store.

    If clorox basically makes fun of you for putting poop-covered things on a table, then you better not do poop-related things at any table, least of all a restaurant.

    Dude puts a nasty-ass PLUNGER on the table. YOU KNOW THERE IS POOP RESIDUE ON THAT THING AND HE PUTS IT ON THE TABLE. ON THE DAMN TABLE. ON PURPOSE.

    I'm all about disinfecting wipes but I'd burn that fuckin' table if anyone put a plunger on it, and I would've SERIOUSLY considered borrowing some disposable gloves from that restaurant and chasing that family down with that nasty diaper.

    I can not, for the life of me, understand why any parent would ever think changing a diaper would be an okay thing to do in a restaurant. At what point does any mother or father decide that this is okay? I understand they are tired and stressed out... but have some common decency and respect. Not just for others, not just for yourself, but for your child whose shit is now of full display for everyone to smell.

    When we were kids I know mom and dad had to take us out to the car to change one or the other of my siblings a lot. I think it was mostly when it was dad's turn because restaurants and places just assume mom takes care of all the changing I guess.

    Fairly sure they never thought to just unload a dirty diaper in the middle of a restaurant. Ick. BFing is feeding your child, I understand why you would want to do that in public where you also eat. But nobody should be doing their bathroom business in public. As I work in retail, I've seen things. All I can say is be glad there was a diaper. *shudders*
