NWR - Book Suggestion

So I'm leaving tomorrow for a business trip and I seem to have the bad luck that my flights always get delayed.  The last one (I travel for business every 2-3 weeks) was delayed by 2 hours.  So, I'm trying to find a good book to download for my Nook.  Any suggestions?  I am not one for the fantasy / sci-fi books, and I recently read and loved Mindy Kaling's book (http://www.amazon.com/Everyone-Hanging-Without-Other-Concerns/dp/0307886271), which I LOVED.

Any suggestions?

Re: NWR - Book Suggestion

  • Damn, my first recommendation was going to be The Passage by Justin Cronin, but it's a post-apocalyptic vampire/zombie book.  Sounds like that isn't your cup of tea.

You might like Wild by Cheryl Strayed if you like memoirs.

Oh, and The Art of Disappearing by Ivy Pochoda is one of the best books I've read recently.  Especially if you like a bit of mystery and/or love Brooklyn.

  • I just finished "Before We Met" (I got it on sale, not sure it's worth the full price).  It was a fairly quick and enjoyable read.  It made me feel validated in side-eyeing people who get married without having known each other for very long beforehand, haha.
  • Oh how could I forget my favorite series?  Maisie Dobbs, awesome female hero, mysteries set in between the wars England.  So good.

  • Did you read Bossypants by Tina Fey?  I liked Mindy Kaling's book better, but they were similar.

Recently, I've read The Girl You Left Behind (LOVED it), and Margot (also loved it).  I read If I Stay, but didn't enjoy it too much (it's YA fiction and although it was a quick read, it wasn't really that captivating).

Ironically, I am traveling to NYC and have several client meetings in Brooklyn!

Oh, then definitely read The Art of Disappearing.

  • You might like "Let's Pretend This Never Happened" by Jenny Lawson (another memoir)--it had me in TEARS from laughing so hard and scared the person next to me on the plane with my snorts of laughter (but it was totally worth it).

It was pretty popular a couple years ago, but I enjoyed "Gone Girl"; a good mystery story with some twists and turns.

Most of my library is true crime stories, so if you enjoy non-fiction mysteries, I can give recommendations for DAYS on those  :)

I second @Slothiegal reccomendation for Let's Pretend This Never Happened I was in tears over how funny it was was.

Gone Girl was also good, I read Dark Places on our HM and thought that was even better.

  • Definitely read Gone Girl if you haven't- I'm still in a funk almost two years later with nothing else I like as much.  Dark Places is my least favorite of Gillian Flynn's 3 books, and I loved Sharp Objects, it was SO twisted (crap, what the heck does that say about me?)

Have you read the Glass Castle (a memoir)?  Good read!

  • Anything by Christopher Moore. Two particularly: A Dirty Job, and Lamb. Both are fantastic and hilarious.

  • This is the most generic suggestion ever but when I'm traveling I want to read something where if someone interrupts me while reading I won't get super irritated. So I'm going to say anything by Nora Roberts. She is easy to read and if you lose your spot because of some distraction it is easy to pick the story back up.

Cannot endorse this enough. I laughed so hard at both that I cried. And I named my boobs after two of his characters.

  • "Dad is Fat" by Jim Gaffigan.  I read that one before Kaling's book and kept laughing aloud as I read it.
