XP from Gifts: They don't expect me to wait, do they?

TL/DR: What's the etiquette on shower gifts shipped to my house? Open and send TY right away, or wait until the shower?

I have two showers coming up, this Sunday and next Saturday. I've been getting gifts in the mail for about two weeks from people who can't make it to the shower. I've opened them all, made sure nothing was broken, stored them away in the basement until after the wedding and dutifully sent Thank You cards within a day or two. But it just occurred to me... people don't expect me to wait until the shower(s) to open these, do they? Like, bring them to the shower and open them there? Maybe not the ones just sent in a packing box, but the ones sent gift-wrapped by the store? I've seen people open gifts at showers from people who weren't in attendance, but I never thought about how those gifts got there; whether another family member delivered them to the shower on behalf of Great Aunt Gertrude, or if they were shipped to the bride who then brought them along with her. I know those people won't know whether or not I haul their gifts along to the shower, but if they get a Thank You card before the shower even takes place will I look super rude?

  • They were shipped to you, so you're good. If they were shipped to the hostess, then you'd open them at the shower.

This. Mail out those cards asap!

ETA- oops, skimming fail. Yay thank you cards!

OK good. They've all been mailed already, was only wondering in hindsight!

  • I have a cousin who just had her shower last weekend.  She lives several states away so I shipped a gift (a set of dishes) to her several weeks back.  I'm actually incredibly pissed that I haven't seen a TY card yet.  I'm sure she waited to open it at her shower and I'm concerned that it arrived at all or arrived in one piece.  I shipped to her house so that she wouldn't have lug an extra item to the shower location and back.  That just seems silly.
  • Yeah, I had received 2 gifts from people who couldn't attend my shower, but I didn't know there was a shower to begin with (surprise!) so I assumed they were late engagement gifts, opened them the day I got them, and sent out thank you notes right away.
  • Yup if someone wants it opened at the shower they will ship to the hostess- that's what I did for two surprise showers.
