I just bought mason jars

so I can make some pickles.

I tried out a CSA box for the first time and wound up with a bunch of tiny little pickling cukes.  Fi and I love pickles and I found a recipe for making fridge pickles.  But I need jars.

The cheapest ones have this cutesy packaging as "vintage jars" and they are tinted light green.  Ugh.  I might be the first person to buy these to actually use to jar something.

  • I've never done canning either, but fridge pickles apparently are pretty easy because you don't need to disinfect them-- they just live in the fridge for a few weeks.

  • I have them to can tomatoes. Lowes carries canning supplies in canning season.

  • I love canning! I tend to make refrigerator pickles more than canned but I love pickling carrots and green beans in jars. I also make my gramma's "Texas sweet sauce"- basically chili sauce. Yum!

  • I do a bunch of canning through the summer/early fall so I can have beautiful Jersey produce even in the dead of winter. I still have some corn and tomatoes in the pantry that I should break out soon to make room.

I think I might want a tutorial sometime, no kidding.  I'd love to be able to do that.  Jersey tomatoes all year?  Yes please.

  • Ordering the jars online seems to be cheaper. My MIL cans like no other. Seriously it's like going to the grocery every time we visit haha. She thinks it's funny that something she has been using for the last 20 years is so trendy now lol
  • I love homemade pickles.
(This may be the most revolutionary mason jar idea of the year! You can put FOOD in them! Quick- put it on pinterest!)
OMG we will be internet famous!  What a great idea!

It's actually pretty easy, as long as you sterilize everything and boil the jars for long enough. Having the right equipment is also a big plus. Up until a couple years ago, I only knew how to do refrigerator pickles, but I found great instructions for canning online. This is one of my favorite sources: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/packages/canning-pickling-and-preserves-101.html

  • I just saw those green jars, btw. The Ball company used to make (pre WWII) a couple of really beautiful shades of green glass. A nice emerald, and a very pretty moss color my Grandma called "pickle green." The modern "limited edition" reproductions look nothing at all like either.

Irrelevant. I smelled fresh dill growing today, and am really excited about pickles. I may actually try this.
  • I saw those when I was looking for something close to ones my great grandmother gave me. Hers are antique and a very pretty light blue.
  • Mmmm pickles!
  • Very, very easy. The website FoodinJars.com is a great resource, as is the Ball Blue Book.

FWIW, we can pretty regularly, and we used Mason jars as vases at our wedding. It was great because we got to keep them after the wedding. We washed them well and now some of them are storing pickled celery and rhubarb syprup.
  • I can every year. We can green beans, butter beans, corn, black-eyed peas, tomatoes, and onions. I've recently started making preserves with my aunt.

  • Once I recreate the family apple butter recipe, you bet your buns I'm canning that stuff.
