First Dance Songs?

2

Re: First Dance Songs?

  • I Only Have Eyes for You by the Flamingos (covered by tons of other artists too) Wonder of You by Elvis is also a great choice and probably would have been our back up song.
  • sarahufl, what's your preferred style of music? This was a major issue for FI and I. I like a broad spectrum, but he is more of a rock guy (I like rock, but wanted something a little softer for a first dance). He wanted to do "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith, which I wasn't all too thrilled about (even though I do like the song). I offered up so many songs that he didn't like that I hated music in general for awhile lol. In the end we settled on Frank Sinatra since he likes the classiness of that style and I know every Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin song there is to sing. The particular song by Sinatra is "More," I have NO idea why this isn't a more popular first dance song...

Now that we picked it, I told my parents and my dad insists on it being "From This Moment" by Shania Twain...To each his own lol.

That song is the only one that FI seems to be excited about. I'm not a big fan. I might suck it up and give in, though I'm still searching for alternatives.
Wandajune, my BFF and her H danced to that song.  They NEVER realized how long it was until they were dancing to it with 200 people staring at them and it just kept going!  They never thought to ask the DJ to edit the song down, so if you do go with that - remember how long it is!  We have a good laugh about it now!

  • Tangled up in you by Aaron Lewis.

  • Pretty sure our first dance will be "God Gave Me You" by Blake Shelton.

But I also really love "To Make You Feel My Love" by Garth Brooks, so I may convince FI to switch to that one.

Also, both of our parents' first dance was "You're the Inspiration" by Chicago, so we plan on playing that one at some point!
  • I rallied hard for R. Kelly's "Bump and Grind." Tacky? Maybe, but hilarious? Absolutely. And one of the things me and FI love about each other are our senses of humor. But unfortunately, he would not agree to this song lol

So now I'm contemplating either Elvis - Can't Help Falling in Love, Van Morrison - Crazy Love, or George Strait - Carried Away

  • We just decided on "Never Stop" (the wedding version) by Safety Suit. Me and FI never had an opportunity to dance together ever before, so we don't have a song thats "our song".  We have very different tastes in music, and he basically hated everything I showed him.  I randomly stumbled across this one and sent him the link via text, he liked the lyrics so much, that he called and said "that's it that's what I want, we're done looking."

Good call! That might be enough for me to talk him out of it. We're awful dancers so we want something short. Thank you!

  • I think we've settled on "It Had to Be You" by Sinatra. I think we will use The Piano Guys version of "A Thousand Years" for our cake cutting

  • FI LOVES that Lucky song - it spoke to him while he was deployed.

I think we're going to use Me and You by Kenny Chesney for our first dance song.

  • We're using The Piano Guy's A Thousand Years for our ceremony processional. I love it! So beautiful.
  • We went with First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes... Super emotional and I think a lot of ppl reared up over it.. Very us.. Love that song!
  • Ellie Goulding's cover of "Your Song". It makes me cry.

  • Lucky, by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat.

Other good options: Stay Young, Go Dancing by Death Cab for Cutie; Love Someone by Jason Mraz; Make You Feel my Love by Dylan, also covered by Adele; You & Me, DMB.

    1. Love that song!

    2. That was my sister's first dance song. Then Lea Michele sang it on Glee's tribute to Cory Monteith. :( It was unfortunate for her.

  • Wow, I didn't realize Lucky was so popular!  It has been one of my favorites for years.  I think for the past few years, even before we were engaged, we always knew it would be our first dance song.

Jason Mraz has a lot of good ones.  I also love "I Won't Give Up," but the lyrics about relationship struggles don't seem quite right for a first dance, at least for us.

Love that song! We already have a first dance song picked out, so I'm think I might use it during the processional at the ceremony.
  • FI and I wanted a more upbeat song. We were stuck between "you're my best friend" by queen and "Smile" by Uncle Kracker. We decided to walk in to the reception to Queen and have our first dance as "Smile" by Uncle Kracker

  • We did Time of Our Lives by Bonnie Raitt (but edited). We've always really liked that song and thought it set the right tone. We also wanted something a little more upbeat and this fit that. This was actually one of the first decisions we made after getting engaged, but we kept it a secret until the wedding.

We are stuck too! This is what I'm thinking:

    1. Mirrors by Justin Timberlake. He is one of my favorite artists and one time when the song was playing , FI told me I was his Mirror (aww lol). This was right before we got engaged, and we both love the song so I felt like it would be good for us, and fits us perfectly. Not sure how we would dance to it though lol.
    2. I'm Yours by Jason Mraz
    3. Love 1000 years but I'm leaning towards incorporating it during another aspect.
    4. I love "Somewhere over the Rainbow" by Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole.
    5. We both love "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing"
    6. 100 years by Five for Fighting
    7. Falling in Love with you - Elvis Presley
    10. Fly me to the Moon - Frank Sinatra (Love Frank Sinatra music)
    11. The way you look Tonight - Frank Sinatra
    12. Let's Stay Together - Al Green (I really adore this song)
    13. Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darin

I'm afraid some of these songs would require too much dancing, though. Like with Frank, maybe some swing lessons or something. I like dancing, but not when ALL eyes are on me. I can do a romantic slow dance fine, anything beyond that I might be too nervous. I was also thinking of maybe picking a Spanish song, such as a Salsa song, but that is even worse!

As you can see I'm all over the place! Did I mention how indecisive I am?

ETA: This isn't even the full list. And it doesn't help that FI and I were 18 when we met and in a different phase of life. While we didn't have an actual "song", back then it would have been something along the lines of Method Man "You're All I Need" or Jay Z and Beyonce " Bonnie and Clyde." His ring tone for me in college at one point was "Oh Girl" by Paul Wall...Okay and now as I type that. I love the original song by the Chi-Lite's. Although... would it be inappropriate to choose the Paul Wall version??

  • Ours was "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" by Louis Armstrong. Short, sweet, and Louis was one of my grandpa's favorite singers

DH is Irish so we knew we wanted something from an Irish band, but we were also looking for something we'd never heard used at a wedding before (which pretty much eliminated U2 for that purpose, sadly). We also found a local band that did a rocking Irish version of our school's alma mater that we had played at our reception too. We also had a piper to lead me down the aisle and to lead us to the reception.

  • @JCBride2015 part of our cake cutting song was Lucky.  It's such a good song.

We chose our first dance song to be All I Ask of You from Phantom of the Opera, two days before the wedding we tried dancing to it and realized it didn't work.  We changed it to Storybook Love the theme song from the Princess Bride, it worked much better it's one of our favorite movies and it worked with the loose "theme" we had for the wedding.

@Peaseblossom55 we must be musical soul mates because I love all of those songs, too.  I should remember to add All I Ask of You to my love songs playlist.
Storybook Love is my processional song!  :) It's a classical guitar instrumental version. FI and I watched The Princess Bride on our second date. <3

  • "Taken" by Rhonda Vincent. We live in SW VA, and bluegrass is extremely popular. We saw her play this song live at Dollywood about a month before he proposed and I fell in love with it (he already knew about it and has been a bluegrass fan forever). We decided on it the day we got engaged.
  • @lolo883 how perfect! It's such a great song.

  • We're dancing to Always in my Head by Coldplay. Friends are performing A Thousand Years for the signing of the register. I Choose You by Sara Bareilles is a good one, too - it's our processional :)

  • I'm seriously in love with how many people chose the Piano Guys cover of A Thousand Years.

Did/Will you guys play the CD track or was it performed live?
