Last weekend my wallet was stolen.
We were on the motorcycle and were going on a train ride. At the depot, FI used bungee cords to strap down the tank bag so deter someone from just walking off with it. I had left my wallet in the bag (incredibly stupid on my part but we'd never, ever had trouble before) but had my drivers license and main debit card in my pocket. We took our train ride, toured a brewery and were returned back to the depot. As we were walking up to the bike, I noticed our boots were on the ground next to the bike and I remember that FI had put them into the tank bag. My heart stopped. The tank bag was a couple of parking spaces away in front of a car and it was open and some stuff was on the ground. Nothing was missing except my wallet. We called to file a police report and while waiting for the police, I started calling credit card companies and my banks. I got ahead of any charges as everything that was on the cards were my own purchases. So now all accounts have been closed. I've signed up for LifeLock and reported to social security, IRS and the FTC.
Last night my phone rings and it was Capital One. They had a lady on the other line who was calling because SHE FOUND MY WALLET!!! I couldn't believe it! It obviously still had my CO card in there and she said my checkbook was still there also. I didn't ask her to go through and inventory it for me but she said that while she was looking for contact information, she saw my boys' pictures so they are still in there too! I'm thinking that the thief was just looking for cash, which I didn't have in there, and ditched the wallet when they found it came up empty. I'm grateful that no one else picked it up and emptied it after that.
I've been pretty bummed since that happened and I know not everyone is bad out there but I'm pretty stoked to have the wallet coming back to me.
What do you fine ladies think about giving the lady who found it money/gift card or something for calling? Part of me always used to think that honest behavior shouldn't necessarily be rewarded but now I wonder if I shouldn't send something to her? She not only went out of her way to call my credit card company but when I told her that I had filed a police report, she also called them to tell them she had found it and was going to send it back to me. They told her to give it to them and they would get it back to me so I feel as though I should do something.
What says you?
