'Wild'

I read the book this summer and loved it. It has been a dream of mine to hike the Pacific Crest Trail for probably 10 years now, which is exactly why I picked the book up. I haven't done it yet because of all my pain issues- but I will gosh darn it I will! The book is a fantastic story of a woman who leaves her broken life to walk the entire length of California on the Pacific Coast Trail. It's a great book. But is it OK that I'm upset that they are making it into a movie? It's not because it doesn't deserve to be a movie- but because now a bunch of people will start backpacking. And I don't want to be looped in with all of those people who are backpacking because of the movie. When I hike the PCT I want it to be just as empty as when Chyrl Strayed did her walk.

  • I haven't read the book, but I have seen it the last couple of times I went to Barnes and Noble. I'll have to check it out!

  • I read the book a couple years ago and really enjoyed it!  I also love Reese Witherspoon though, so I'm not too sad they're making a movie.

I wouldn't worry about a bunch of people deciding they want to backpack because they saw a movie. It's a fairly pricey hobby and not so easy to just pick up because you saw a cool movie. SO and I love camping and would love to get into backpacking we just can't really swing it financially for some of the equipment - like you know the backpack - right now.

I think I'll check the book out though. I'm always looking for book recommendations and this one sounds right up my alley!

  • Totally get what you're feeling. I've been wanting to climb Kilimanjaro for years but couldn't afford it (then DH came along and life took over, but we're looking into it). Anyway, we had a motivational speaker at our school who climbed it on his hands (he has no legs). My AP now assumes I only want to do it cos he did it. Frustrates me that people make these assumptions. Go have fun and don't worry about what everyone else is thinking.

  • I read the book this summer, too, and loved it! FI and I already camp and backpack regularly, but I haven't done anything like the PCT. My friend is on the AT right now, and I'm so jealous. That's definitely on my bucket list.

I hate to say it, but I don't think a movie starring Reese Witherspoon is really going to start a movement. She's the bubblegum princess of fluffy movies.
