NWR: What do you think?

So I am bored in the waiting room at the dentists watching the lunch hour news. They are discussing this new dating website that requires its members to send in a DNA sample so that the company can process it and have their computer aoftware genetically match them to their perfect mate.

Personally, I'm not to keen on just handing out my DNA to some random company, much less being given a partner match solely based on the genetics. Anyone else have any issues with this new dating idea? Or opinions on the matter?

Re: NWR: What do you think?

  • Yeah, it sounds like the start of some kind of thriller.

  • What's wrong with Match.com and Eharmony?  Why can't we do that stuff anymore and...you know...date people and get to know them?  This sounds creepy to me....

  • They actually are probably after your DNA though, no joke.  That's how 23andMe makes all their money.  They provide a nominal service to the customer, and charge for it, but really they are turning around and selling your DNA out the back door for research.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • Oh hell no.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • They actually charge pretty hefty fees for their services compared to other dating services. It was close to $300+ for a one year subscription. I just can't believe people would want to do that.
  • Science says we choose partners who are incredibly similar in DNA structure to ours. In theory, it's an interesting and probably successful idea. But I am also not a scientist.
I thought we were actually more attracted to people with different DNA-- you know, get as wide a mix as possible to thwart genetic problems.  Same reason I've heard men smell better if they share less of your DNA in common.

The more similar the DNA, the more likely a person is to feel attached or loyal to someone. (ie family ties)

As far as breeding purposes, the more variation between DNA Iis supposed to attract to promote the chance of healthy offspring.

  • I wonder if they also use it to make sure their clients aren't related prior to matching them.  With people using donor eggs and/or sperm it's entirely possible that genetic siblings could meet and never figure out they are related. Various crimes shows have done different versions of that storyline.

  • Yeah no. I'm pretty sure if I wanted to do this I wouldn't be allowed too. Due to my dad's profession (colonel in cyber warfare) I can't even go to some countries. I'm too paraniod of a person too try this website.
