The cutest puppy - Mini Walrus - w/ pic update!

edited July 2014 in Chit Chat
H and I have always known we'll have a dog as part of our family. We bought a house a year and a half ago, then I changed jobs, then we got married, then we were remodeling said house...... timing sucked.

H has always wanted a sporting, or "good lookin'" dog. I like unique and even goofy looking animals - they make me smile. As long as it has a good personality and is a good fit for our lifestyle, I'm happy. We both work full time, but like to be active in the off hours.

Fast forward to now. I found a dog I am IN LOVE with. It's a beagle and shar pei mix - they called it a Mini Walrus (a "Walrus" is apparently a shar pei and a basset hound). So...

You can imagine how adorable.... squeeeeeee!!! Has anyone ever heard of this mix? If so, good/bad reviews? If not, does anyone have a beagle or a shar pei? What are your thoughts on those breeds? Getting a dog is no joke and I want to make the right (i.e. unemotional) decision.

  • Oh my god. Oh my god. Both of those babies are THE CUTEST.

I have no experience with that particular mix. I will say that beagles have a very distinctive, braying bark that can be...a bit grating. This is not to say that all beagles have barking "problems," though! But they do bark at their "prey," so a certain amount of barking is inevitable and actually part of their breed. I am not sure what introducing the shar-pei into the mix will do here.

Okay, now I'm going back to dying of cuteness.

  • I love beagles but have not had any experience with a shar pei. Here are a few things I do know:
-Beagles love to run around and be outside.
    -Beagles can be very hyper.
    -Beagles are super loyal.
-Beagles will crash and be lazy after getting their energy out.
-Beagles can pick up a scent and be off in a split second so you will have to make sure you keep an eye on them.
-Beagles calm down and get super lazy with age.

A girl I know has a shar pei and he is precious. He is always cuddling with her and lounging around. They keep him inside.

It sounds like the two personalities could mix well.

  • I don't know anything about the mix, but I do know a little about beagles. They need a lot of exercise. I've also been told that they need to be able to smell often, or they can become destructive.

I think that mix sound adorable. But please rescue a dog and do not buy one!!
  • That would be the cutest dog ever! I have never owned a shar pei, but my fur baby is a beagle.

    Pros:

Ridiculously cuddly. Like she will come up and just plop into your lap. Seriously the most affectionate dog I have ever known.

She is very loyal like @emmaaa mentioned. She will always find me in a crowd.

Bailey is super playful and even though she will be turning 5 next month, she still acts like a puppy.

There are really so many pros, I could go on and on.

    Cons:

That howl! Beagles don't bark, they bay. This means that when my dog decides to make noise, the whole neighborhood hears her.

She is so stubborn. Beagles are incredibly smart, so they know how to get what they want (in most cases food). They are relentless until they get it.

I am not sure if this is true of all beagles, but mine is a total sissy diva. She will howl like she is being killed over the smallest things like if she steps on a pebble.

Overall, I highly recommend beagles. They take some work, but it is so worth it at the end of the day.

We would be rescuing him. Originally, we strongly considered a breeder (for some kind of doodle) because we didn't want a rescue dog with "baggage". But this one is a puppy so we feel like we could still have the influence we want to have.

  • Fun fact: shar peis get less wrinkly as they age!

  • That's awesome!  H and I looking for a dog.  I convinced him to get a Yorkie.  We considered going the breeder route.  Then I saw how many other Yorkies need a good, loving home. So now we're on the hunt for a rescue.  I actually just filled out an application for a nice little boy who will be up for adoption on Sunday.

Good luck!  Post pics when you find your little fur baby.

  • I've never had either breed, but I'm pretty sure I need one of these guys in my life.  Stat.

  • SO. CUTE.
Fi and I have the worst puppy fever right now. Our lease is up NEXT June, and we're already excited to move and get a dog.

  • TOO CUTE! I also agree with going the rescue route. We just rescued our newest addition (not from a shelter though... he approached FI on a reserve and was in dire conditions) and he has turned out awesome!!! He is so attached to us and just thrives on snuggles. Hell, he's been trying to climb into my lap while on the computer for the last half hour! (He's also 40 lbs and 7 months old... not a lap dog by any means!)

  • Love beagles. They have nice temperaments. ( Love their relatives, the Basset hounds most in all the world. Even with the baying.)
  • I had a beagle for 14 years. He was my dog "before kids" and trust me, your dog before kids is your child. I loved that dog so much. We just put him down 3 years ago and I still think about him everyday. He was SUCH A BAD DOG. Beagles are awful but in the best way. They run away. They are nearly untrainable because they are hunters. They follow their nose and nothing stops them. Scrappy Doo ran away every single chance he got. He once ran away in the middle of New York City and I had to chase him up and down the Times Square streets. Dear Lord that dog was terrible. I would NEVER buy another one while I had kids because I think children should have a dog that won't run away every time they open the door a crack. But otherwise, I can't wait to get another one. They are beautiful and so smart. Oh also they can get really bad allergies. Scrappy also had allergies. It's one of the main reasons we ended up having to put him down. I included a special picture of Scrappy.

  • My beagle did bay but really never unless I made him. So in general he was quiet. He also didn't chew stuff up. My current lab chews stuff up.

Scrappy had a code word that his previous owner (only had him for a year) apparently bred into him that made him bay. One day one of my friends was playing with him and said "Bababoeey" and the dog went berserk and started baying and howling like crazy. You could say lalaloeey, wawawooey, hahahooey and NOTHING. But bababooey and he went mad. It was the funniest thing. I would do it once in a while to show people the "trick". It was known as the "Worst concert in town".
