NYE '14/'15 - hopefully be engaged?! [Timeline set by BF a few months ago - and I know the ring is ordered because I may or may not have accidentally gotten a voicemail from the jeweler. Oops on the jewelers part . . . ]

February '15 - have credit cards paid off under 35%

March '15 - be down another dress/pant size, go on an amazing Cruise to the Bahamas . . . . we need it a little bit.

April '15 - start house hunting

    Summer '15 - As long as we're engaged - have venue/photographer/DJ booked for Fall '16 [Hopefully. . . ]

Fall '15 - hopefully be in a house - as long as we're in a house - Puppy time!

  • @jenna8984  Fair warning, while they're both technically the same language, Canadian-French and Parisian-French are vastly different.

From someone who grew up with Ontario-French from kindergarten, was taught by a Parisian-French immersion teacher and who was completely confused the first time I went to Quebec.
This. I lived in Montreal for 9 years and when I first moved there I barely understood the Canadian French. I was also taught Parisian French in school in Mauritius and I was as confused as @jennyleigh16 !

Well shit, maybe we'll just stick to Spanish then! But I do want to learn basic phrases, I've heard Parisians are not very friendly if you just start asking them questions in English. But that they are really nice if you start off with like Bonjour- parlevous englai? (I know I spelled that all wrong lol)

@ladymillil Those are pretty awesome countries, I hope you get one! I'd be stressed getting pregnant then having to move to Europe. What is your research on?

I have to look for a fellowship about a year before I want to actually start working. If everything goes ok baby should be born in Canada and about 6 months old by the time we move overseas. My research is on sexually transmitted viruses and the vaginal immune system.

French Canadians, especially in Montreal or Quebec, will not be any nicer to you for speaking English! If anything they might be worse as they are very very attached to anything French. However, any effort you make will be highly appreciated :) What I noticed in Paris is that they might not necessarily like to answer you in English but there are so many English speaking tourists that they don't seem to mind so much. Now if you're planning to live in France and can't speak French, that's a different story!

  • @jenna8984 I definitely had that experience in France - even if they understand you, they might turn their nose up at you for speaking English. (Not limited to France, of course - we all know plenty of Americans who wouldn't give someone trying to speak to them in Spanish a second glance.) No matter what country you're in, you should always approach people in their own language and make your best effort to communicate that way rather than asking for English right off the bat. They'll often see that you're struggling and offer to try in English anyway! Pointing at the menu or a sign while trying to sound it out goes a long way!

In France and in Brazil we found that a lot of people spoke multiple languages, so if we couldn't understand each other in French, Portuguese, or English, sometimes German or Spanish did the trick! That was actually the only way my Brazilian Portuguese-speaking friend could communicate with someone in Portugal for work - they both spoke Spanish!

Yes ma'am! We MAY decide to just drive because I'm terrified to fly and make a road trip of it.

  • FI (will be H then- eee!) may go to Australia in June for work - if that happens, I'm moving heaven and earth to be able to go over there for at least a few days.
    image

  • This month: Go to DMV and get new (married name!) driver's license
    Next month: Start CNA training
January: Complete CNA training. Find job as a CNA
Spring '15: Complete landscaping of back yard
Summer '15: Lose enough weight to be a candidate for tandem skydiving.
    Fall '15: MAKE BABY.

General goals: Lose about 40 pounds and get my resting heart rate down. Resume taking modern dance classes.

Also, for you ladies who haven't been, Alaska is well worth it. I got to touch a puffin, hug a wolf, get splashed by a whale, see the Aurora Borealis, and swim in the Arctic Ocean!

Parlez-vous anglais? :) Spanish and french are actually very similar languages because they both originate from latin (I think?) I took a few Spanish classes and I was surprised how easily it came since I was already pretty fluent in French. If you speak Spanish fluently and have some context you should be able to sorta get by anywhere French. I'm not saying you'll be able to have a conversation but you should be able to find the bathrooms and order a drink.

    Say it with me now:
    Where are the bathrooms?
    Ou sont les toilettes?
    Donde estan los banos?

You're on your own for the drinks.

Edited because I haven't spoken French since high school and tenses should match.

Yup, both Romance languages, in with Italian. And, I think, Portuguese, at least to some extent. Once you know one, the other ones are a weensy bit easier. Not much, but it's not like going from English to Mandarin would be. They're much closer.

My goals are pretty sad. Pay on student loans, set a damn date again, move out of my parents house (hopefully sooner than later...), get married. Maybe get my paralegal certification? Not sure. MAYBE start TTC?

It's much more of a Canadian vs American thing though.  If you're Canadian, Quebecers expect that we should all be able to speak French.  If they hear an American accent, they're much more happy to speak English cos they don't expect Americans to speak French.

    Goals

End of this year - Make it through the holidays without major family issues.  Sounds easy in theory....

January 2015 - Get DH a new car for his job he is starting which requires a longer commute (the truck is a guzzler)

March 2015 - Pay of my remaining student loans and start paying on DH

May 2015 -  Welcome the first baby to come from one of my BFFs!  I can't wait!

    - Also start looking for new positions in my current company - Time for a change!

Summer 2015 - Get some housework done.  There is much to choose from: bathroom, windows, back patio, new exterior paint.  I'm at a loss on where to start...

Fall 2015 - Take a small vacation for the year to celebrate DH completing his masters (end of summer) and hopefully a full time job offer.

So there's my goals.  I'm starting to think about kids and if it became part of the plan that's ok, but I think we will try and wait for 2016!  We're looking to take a big international trip in 2016 so my plan is to start trying after that.  Also, there's still a lot of questions about our long term location until DH finishes school.
