Food Menu - Is It Weird

So... our venue has super fancy food. An example: Roasted chicken supreme with a feta and back pepper crust with a fig and balsamic reduction.

My palette is that of a child - I like chicken fingers and grilled cheese.

So my question - would it be weird if everyone else got super fancy food and i had like, regular chicken and french fries or something?

I've seen posts somewhere (possibly in a wedding etiquette book?) that it's in poor taste to feed your guests different food then yourselves.  Does this only apply if you're eating prime rib and they're eating chicken, or is this a serious thing?

Thank you!

  • I think that this still falls under the etiquette guideline you mentioned and would technically be considered a "no". However, I honestly don't think I have ever paid attention to the food on the bride and groom's plates at a wedding before.

  • I don't think I would notice or care. I think it's awfully considerate of you to not serve all of your guests chicken fingers and fries. :)

  • Can you ask the venue to just have one simple option for people who are picky, and that's what you'll also eat?  I imagine that if the food is too complicated/fancy for you, there might also be a few other guests who'd appreciate a chicken fingers option.  And I bet it wouldn't cost anything because it's cheaper than the other food.

Or maybe you can have them just take the fancy sauce off an existing entree.  Roasted chicken with a feta and black pepper crust is going to taste good to you if you like chicken fingers.

This. I too am a picky eater and would really appreciate a simple dish option.

  • I think you will be fine. "down grading" is better than upgrading.

Just in case you could still offer it in the form of a kids meal.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I think it'd be nice to offer "The Bride's Special" to your guests, as well.

  • I like the suggestion of getting one plain type of meal offered to everyone. My FI pretty much only eats plain chicken any time we go out and same for my SIL. They don't like steak or fish or fancy sauces.

I was a bridesmaid last year and the bride special ordered herself sushi. At the time I thought oh that's cool that she's getting her favorite thing! But now after being on here I realize that was pretty rude.

  • I would prefer chicken fingers and fries over most of the food I see or read about at weddings. I had a hell of a time picking food for my wedding that I would actually like.

  • My DH is a picky eater, so we made sure that one of the entree choices suited him, his even pickier son, and any potential guests who may not like "fancy" food. Not that our food was fancy, but reading how it was prepared sure made it sound "fancy."

If you would prefer something more simple, like other PP's have said, just downgrade an entree or make that entree more simple. We had steak as an option with a mushroom sauce...ummm no, what other sauces do you offer? They let me sample 3 others at the tasting and I found a red wine one that I liked (I hate wine, but that sauce was amazing!) and we went with that instead. I bet the Chef is willing to work with you as well.
  • If I were a guest, I'd probably wonder why I didn't have the option of Chicken Fingers & Fries instead of the fancy-dancy food. I'm more of a meat & potatoes type of girl myself.
