Escort Cards for small children

edited August 2014 in Wedding Etiquette Forum
Sorry this is not EXACTLY etiquette related, but I can't decide where else it belongs and this board definitely gets the most traffic. My problem is we're making escort cards and assigning tables but not seats. I have several very small children (almost all 11 children invited are under 5). Do they get their own escort card that mom/dad has to pick up? Or do I make 3 cards that say "Smith family" or what is easiest?

I suspect I am over thinking, as we're 2 weeks out and I'm starting to get a little anxious about all the things I pushed to the end of planning (by necessity really, like place cards and table arrangements). Any advice/help is appreciated!

Re: Escort Cards for small children

  • We are two weeks out as well... yay!

IO don't know if I am doing it right but I plan to put the children on with the parents

Married couple with children: Mr. & Mrs. xyz lastname
    and family

Single with children: Mr. xyz lastname
    and family

If they only have one child I will put the childs name instead of "and family".
When I have mentioned the RSVP for caterer numbers and seating, both FI and my families look at me like I am stupid. I don't think they are used to it and I want to make it as least complicated as possible.... I hope
  • I did one for each person, regardless of age.

We did it by families for kids not of reading age and individual cards for others and it worked out fine.
  • I'm doing one per couple (didn't specify who got which entree on the RSVP) and one per child, except babies who will be on the parents' card. The kids will KIND OF have assigned seats, since some will need high chairs, and they'll all have a kids' pack left at their seat with crayons and whatnot. They can obviously move them but I'll put those where they make sense (against a wall if possible, or where there's room for a stroller). I know when I was a kid I'd have loved my own card.

  • We had quite a few children at our wedding, and we had escort cards for all of them. It actually made it easier because we counted out 10 cards for each table, instead of trying to remember that the table with the Jones family had 3 kids, therefore 3 fewer cards.
  • We did them for the couple of kids we had that were school aged, but not for babies.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • We had a lot of kids at our wedding. Everyone (including my 2, 10 month old nieces) got their own place card.

There were 4 children in high chairs, which were at their assigned tables. We had one kids table, with 11 children ranging from 7-12. Each kid at the kids table got an escort card.

I know it is kind of silly, but when I was 5, I would have felt so honored to have my own place card at a wedding. It would have made me feel grown up :)

  • I would make cards for everyone. The kids like seeing their names and it does help you keep track of the number of people at each table.
  • I did an escort card for my toddler flower girl and my cousin's newborn baby.  Not sure how the flower girl's parents felt, but the newborn's parents LOVED seeing their daughter's name on something formal. And I'd imagine it would be fun for a child who can read to see their name on something like that.  Sometimes it's the little things.

  • I included the few kids that we had at our wedding on their parents card, since I did 1 card per couple and the kids were sitting at the parents table.
  • If you only have a few kids coming and/or the kids are very small, then I think you can include them on their parents' card.  Otherwise, I'd make a separate card for each kid as well as each adult guest or couple.
  • I did "Smith Family - Table 5" for my wedding. I don't think parents would think to look for escort cards for their kids.

If they are seated at the same table as their parents and/or have the same last name as at least one of the parents searching for their escort card shouldn't be too difficult. It should be with a parent's card.

This! My cousins and I always loved having our own cards when we were little. It made us feel special.

  • My escort cards were attached to cookies so of course everyone got their own regardless of age :-9

    Stuck
Ours were attached to jelly beans. I did a card for every individual - including for my 7 month old nephew, which my sister promptly took a bazillion pictures of him next to.
