My fiancé and I are getting married this October. We have several invitations left over and thought it would be cool to invite some famous people.  Has anyone done this? I'm just curious as to what the response time was and how you went about it. Thanks!

Re: inviting celebrities to your wedding

  • I wouldn't do it unless you actually have a relationship with the people in question.
  • People do it. I don't get the allure, but whatever floats your boat.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • You'll get a note of congratulations from the Obamas, just send the invite to the White House. As for the others it will depend on how their PR people handle these things.

  • I don't get it - if you get anything at all, you'll get some form letter that their secretaries or interns hate dealing with.

  • I personally think it is a dumb thing to do.  The actual celebrity will never see it (nor would they really care if they did) and whatever you receive will be something handled by a lowly intern who prints a digital signature of the celebrities at the bottom of some pre-written, by someone who is not the celebrity, note.

  • It's not my thing, but I've never gotten the appeal of autographs.
  • I think doing this is pointless.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I don't really get this either.
  • My mom recommended sending one to the president. They'll send you a congrats - that's pretty fun! Other celebs, I'm not so sure. I've worked for celebs, and most of the time physical mail is just a pain in the ass and ends up in the trash (sadly).

  • I know it's ridiculous but I am totally inviting Chris Harrison. I am shamelessly obsessed with reality television and I tweeted at him a few months ago asking if he would officiate our wedding. He politely declined, but I was so excited that he tweeted at me I about died. Even if he doesn't respond I am going to give him an escort card because my friends will think it's hilarious. Everyone else won't even notice and just think it's another name of another guest they don't know. Now that I'm thikning of it, David Hasselhoff might have to get an escort card as well...

Just out of curiosity, how do you know they'll actually appreciate being asked, especially since Chris Harrison already declined to officiate?  If you don't know them, I'd leave them alone.
  • I don't think most (gracious) celebrites are annoyed by their fans. I'm not chasing after him down the street in Beverly Hills screaming at him. Or interrupting him having a meal in a restaurant. I'm just sending a wedding invitation to his professional address with a funny explanatory post-it stuck to it. I'm 99.9% he will either never see it, or will see it and not be annoyed.

P.S. I didn't really expect Chris Harrison to officiate my wedding either. The man tweets with fans constantly. It's his job and it was funny.

If you're 99.9% sure he won't see it, it really just doesn't make sense to me to invite him.
  • Because there is 00.01% he WILL see it, check the decline box, write his name on the RSVP card, and send it back. In which case I will hang it on my wall FOREVER. Lol.

It's really no different than writing to your favorite celebrity and asking for their autograph. That isn't considered rude - It's totally normal and fun and people have been doing this for a hundred years! They can send you one if they want, or then can throw your note in the trash. But if they send it back to you on your own wedding invite, it's 10 times more awesome. I get it if autographs aren't your thing! But no one is putting anyone out by sending an invite.
  • I don't get autographs.   I've met plenty of celebs.  Never asked for the auto-graph.  I guess I get in person ones over mailed in ones.   At least you know they are signing it and not some lackey.

I think there is a difference between asking the celebrity to sign something for you and asking them to come to your personal occasion.  If you yourself wouldn't accept a wedding invitation from a stranger, and would be side-eyeing it, I think it's not a great leap that a celebrity wouldn't appreciate a wedding invitation from a stranger who sent it based solely on their celebrity.
  • If you have extra invites, I see no harm in inviting a celeb (or two) to your wedding. Just don't expect them to reply or show up. My sister invited Harry Connick, Jr to her wedding (he has a connection to her H's family). My sister had no realistic expectations for him to be there (if he did come, she may have ditched her H), and I don't think she chose him over an aunt or family friend. It's harmless.
  • I'm going to invite a Lotus dealership owner to my wedding,
maybe I'll get lucky and he'll drive down in a lotus and offer that as a wedding gift.

    Lol.

Is anyone who wants to do this prepared to actually host the celebrities and deal with all their security and other issues on the tiniest chance that the invitation will actually be accepted?

We always say to be prepared for 100% attendance, and that includes celebrities too-oh, and their SOs.

Haha. That's a problem I'd be more than happy to take on. Lol.

Well, then you'll also have to cope with their demands for special foods, drinks, music, photography, security and just about everything connected to the wedding.

Also, consider something like what happens in The Godfather when Johnny Fontane shows up at Connie's wedding.  He upstages the couple.  Do you really want that to happen at your wedding?
  • I've read of different things happening. For example the Queen of England did show up for a couples wedding. So they might come. But I don't think Micky or Minnie Mouse would show up miles away from Disney areas unless hired or for a charity. So the Disney invites and President ones are just for the certificates that you can get.
Others like Nathan Fillion (Rick Castle and Cap. Mal) are reported to sign the invitation and sending it back.  Lots of mementos made at this time may as well have ones you want and are fun: Mikey, Cinderella, and the President are common ones. The Pope and Queen of England are others that send certificates.

I know you may not realise this, but she is the Queen of the United Kingdom. Please don't insult Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the rest of the commonwealth by just saying Queen of England. That is like if here we only refered to New York as the USA. I think there would be 49 other states saying a quick "excuse me??".

I know it is a common occurance in North America to say England meaning GB/UK but it is actually INCREDIBLY insulting!

    England=/= Great Britain or UK

UK= England, Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland.

    GB= England, Wales, Scotland

I am interested to know whose wedding she so happened to show up to.  I am doubting it was Joe Blow from bum-fuck wherever.

No more than you would have to for any other guest.  It's rude for any guest to demand special food, aside from being accommodated for allergies and dietary restrictions.  Same with drinks and music.  If they make any special requests for photography they should be accommodated if possible, just like you would for the comfort of any guest.  It would be rude of them to request special security at the host's expense, but if they're planning on bringing their own security then they should be accommodated if at all possibly, and if not, told "I'm sorry, but due to XYZ reasons we are unable to accommodate your request.  I hope you are still able to join us."  Just like with any other guest.

On the whole I'm meh on the topic of inviting famous people, but I find the bolded to be ridiculous.

And celebrities are famous for good manners and not having entitled attitudes and not throwing temper tantrums if they don't get their way even if it's not "their" occasion? Bullshit. You can find it "ridiculous" but you're in a minority.

Some are good, polite people, but some are so used to the spotlight and having their own way that they make non-celebrity 'zillas look tame.
  • Man, listen to everybody crap all over it. Invite celebrities if you want. Its not harming anybody.

It may not "harm anyone" at best, but at worst it's a waste of time and resources that could be better spent on the guests who will accept the invitation-and whom you actually have relationships with.
