I can't decide if I love this or hate it.

I have NO idea how I'm going to decide on a wedding cake.

Re: I can't decide if I love this or hate it.

  • I would love to eat it.  But I'm not big on looks for a wedding.  But weddings have always said "nicer" or more formal to me, and this doesn't fit with that view.  But if that's what was served, I'd so eat it without complaints.  I also love icing, so less would make me a little sad

  • I feel like if I showed this to my venue, they'd laugh at me. But something about it is appealing. Maybe because I've never seen it before.
  • Boo I can't see the picture and now I really want to know what it looks like especially with the "venue may laugh at me" comment.

  • I feel like if you're iffy on a type of icing, this kind of cake would be the way to go. And lord knows you wouldn't have to mess with any fondant at least.

I would probably love this (even though I'd have to knock myself out with benadryl because of the delicious delicious strawberries).

  • "Naked Cakes" have been somewhat of a trend the last few years. I think they are pretty in their own way, but it seems more like a cake for a brunch or shower versus a wedding. But if you like it go for it!

  • I would shove that cake in my face so fast! It looks delicious! If you are having reservations, though, I say go with @beethery's suggestion and use the type of cake and different icing.

  • I think it's pretty. I also think most wedding cakes look inedible, and this looks delicious. I'm also not a huge fan of most frosting (and I HATE fondant) so this is right up my alley. I wouldn't serve it at a black tie function, but think it's perfectly wedding-appropriate otherwise.

  • I've never seen those personally at a wedding, but I've seen pics of that type of cake floating around the wild world of pinterest. It really appeals to me because I'm not much of a frosting girl. We went with a traditional cake for our wedding, only because I wanted to play it safe. But I would freaking devour a naked cake like that at any wedding I go to.

  • I'm really not a fan of fondant either.
  • Fondant can really look nice but it tastes grooooosssss. I LOVE icing/frosting. I really do, but I can recognize that it isn't for everybody.

I feel like my dad would love a naked cake because he's the kind of dude who scrapes off all the icing but the top (or all of it in case there's a lot between layers)

  • Another vote that fondant is nasty ass! We are just doing buttercream.

  • l My mom made our cake and we decided to leave the sides bare.  She's great at icing tops of cakes, but in the practice run the sides were really stressing her out.  So I remembered these cakes from Pinterest, showed her a few, and she went with it.  I think they turned out awesome!  We actually had a longer line for cake than we did at any point for the bar (a first in my family).  One thing I think helped with how it looked was that it was red velvet cake, so there was a cool contrast between the red cake and the white/ivory buttercream frosting.  Now, our wedding wasn't black tie, but it certainly wasn't super super casual either.  Agh, I wish we had our pro pictures back now so I could show you how it turned out:(
  • @maggie0829 It's a 6 layer naked cake with strawberries and what looks like amazing cream filling between the layers.

I'm having a Bruins cake....so I think I'll get more laughs at the venue than you, OP. And I like the one you posted, looks yummy.

  • FI LOVES the look and idea of "naked" cakes.

However, my hill to die on was demanding as much frosting as possible.

  • Icing is my favourite part so I would be disappointed with a "naked" cake.  Also, "naked cakes" are a trend recently.

  • I was originally going to do dessert from my job, but the package we ended up choosing actually includes a wedding cake. So now I have to decide on something. FI has been extremely involved in every aspect of the wedding - choosing the invitations, the food, he's helping me make the centerpieces. But every time I ask his opinion about a cake, he just shrugs his shoulders!
  • I love the look of it and the whole strawberry shortcake thing it has going on.  Those flavors are right up my alley.  Plus, fondant is disgusting as everyone else has noted.

My only concern would be about the edges of the cake drying out.  Icing or fondant is what helps the cake itself stay moist by keeping the air off of it.  Since most bakeries make their cakes a day or two in advance, not to mention the few hours it sits out on display at the reception,  I would worry about how to keep the cake part from drying out.
  • I love it, and it looks delicious! But I'm weird and not a big fan of frosting.
  • love frosting too, so I wanted to add that mom put MASSIVE amounts of frosting in between the layers.  I was so sad that we ended up not eating the cake, apart from the bits we fed each other:(
  • That cake loo absolutely delicious. And very pretty. Naked cakes are trendy right now but a lot of what goes in to wedding are what's trendy at the time. If you and your FI like it, go for it!

  • My cousin had a cake like this in 1998-she never knew she would be such a trendsetter. People loved it. She also had a more typical chocolate grooms cake.

    That's a good point!

As long as the edges aren't cut, they should be somewhat protected by the nice crunchy cooked edge.

  • Love it. Most "naked cakes" I see lately look like unfinished mistakes, but this is lovely, because of the fillings.
Ultimately, no matter how pretty typical wedding cakes are, a cake is dessert.  This is a great looking dessert. I'd do it.
  • Our baker doesn't do fondant as a rule - which was one of the reasons I made an initial appointment with her. She said it was a cake abomination.

Agree naked cakes are a trend, and I'd be sad to lose out on buttercream, but go for it if you like it.

  • Also my cake is more for show. People are welcome to eat it if they want but if the fondant is nasty we will have apple crisp, pies and other treats to chose from. Maybe you could get a frosted one from your work so the icing lovers can have that?

  • So, if my wedding is more on the formal side, will my guests revolt and say, "WTF was Climbing thinking, having this casual wedding cake while her husband is in a tuxedo!?!? What a dummy!"?
  • FI LOVES the look and idea of "naked" cakes.

Then your FI can have a naked grooms cake, and you can have your icing crazy cake :)

I hate fondant, but DH's cake was fondant and it was delicious, not hard and chewy like I've tasted before. I think it depends on the baker!

That naked cake is pretty but I agree not for an indoor wedding. It's a casual looking relaxed cake. Maybe an outside reception since there's no icing to melt. Definitely a bridal shower though!

  • It's beautiful! I love Cake and strawberries but hate frosting and fondant so it seems perfect to me.

It does seem miserable to cut though.
