I can't decide if I love this or hate it.

Re: I can't decide if I love this or hate it.

  • I'm sorry, I have to be a vote against naked cakes. My opinion is that they look sloppy.  I'm sure that's 100% delicious, but so is buttercream frosting.  I would assume that people who don't like frosting can simply push it to the side and eat the cake anyway.

I wouldn't judge anyone for getting one, of course! It's just definitely not something FI and I have chosen for ourselves.  I think being able to get fun stuff on the sides of your cake is half the fun of wedding cakes.  Ours is buttercream but it'll have dots and look like champagne bubbles.  Simple and fun.

I doubt they would call you a dummy, but I'm a firm believer that wedding decisions need to "match" the venue in terms of formality.

Super duper ritzy ballroom and a BBQ dinner just doesn't make sense, KWIM?

Maybe you can do the naked cake at a shower?

I'm not having a shower. The venue is a little upscale, but it's also very....mountain-ish. I don't know if that makes sense.
  • I am not a fan of naked cakes because they just look unfinished to me. Also, fondant is really not meant to be eaten (even though it is food) which is why you are supposed to peel it off and then eat the cake which should have frosting below the fondant since that is what makes the fondant stick to the cake.

  • I think I like that it's so different. And that's what I was looking for. Really simple but different.
  • Not a fan, personally. I'm sure it tastes great, but I just don't care for the look f it. Our baker makes her own fondant out of marshmallows and it actually tastes pretty good (plus, there's always the super tasty buttercream underneath!) If it's "you" and you love it, I say go for it, though!

Can you post pictures of the venue?  What else are you doing decor wise?

Honestly if you REALLY want it go for it, the cake is a small detail in the grand scheme of things.  As long as you are properly hosting everyone you're good.

  • It sounds like you're going to think about this cake from now on and not be happy until you can have something like it. Go for it!

  • OP, if you want something really different, what are your options with the baker? My venue also included the cake through a local bakery, so we went to the bakery and looked at all the options. Some of the more creative stuff did require a surcharge above what we were already getting included in the venue pricing.

Something I've seen that's "different" but not naked is a half-and-half, for example. One side very traditional and formal, the other side more "fun".  Depending on the bakery that's doing yours, maybe they can consult with you and get something that'll fit your venue.

What if you had dark chocolate buttercream frosting with little rock climbers on it the layers instead of a traditional cake topper?

(I looooooved cake shopping, in case you couldn't tell.)

FI LOVES the look and idea of "naked" cakes.

However, my hill to die on was demanding as much frosting as possible.
Then your FI can have a naked grooms cake, and you can have your icing crazy cake :) I hate fondant, but DH's cake was fondant and it was delicious, not hard and chewy like I've tasted before. I think it depends on the baker! That naked cake is pretty but I agree not for an indoor wedding. It's a casual looking relaxed cake. Maybe an outside reception since there's no icing to melt. Definitely a bridal shower though!

Eh, we are just going cupcakes. That way we can have more flavors and whatnot.  In addition, we can have some with buttercream frosting filling and some with fruit filling.

Groom's cakes just aren't a thing in my social circle.  The only wedding I've been to where there was something close was where the cutting cake was different because the bride had a dairy allergy.

ETA: But I do think that would be a good compromise if we had gone a different route!

  • @climbingbrideny  That is a BEATUIFUL venue!  If the ball room/reception space has the same look and feel I don't think the naked cake will be too casual. The pictures have a very elegant rustic look and the cake will fit in with it beautifully.

When you said a more formal wedding I was picturing a more traditional ballroom.

  • Decor wise, I'm doing some pretty simple stuff. Painted wine bottles, corks and votives for centerpieces.
  • I think a nicely done naked cake would go spectacularly well with that GORGEOUS venue.

  • What a beautiful venue! That cake would totally fit right in.
  • I love your venue. That cake looks amazing and I'm not normally a fan of naked cakes. I say go for it!

  • Thanks everyone!! I am in love with the venue. It's an amazing place.
  • Gosh I just love your venue! It's so beautiful. The cake would really go quite well with the feel of the place. And you seem to love it so I say pull the trigger and go with the naked cake!
  • Check this rustic cake out on the wood slab.

  • Check this rustic cake out on the wood slab.

Don't know why but I feel like this one if over-doing it and crossing into hot mess territory.

I think it is all the flowers...  The flowers + wood slab + "busyness" of a naked cake = hot mess.

  • It's the icing + heavy-handed powdered sugar that's making it look wrong. If they'd cleaned the icing up and had a little more restraint with the sugar, they'd be in business.

  • Your venue is gorgeous!  I think your cake will go with the decor splendidly and I now really wish I could go to a wedding there.

So there's an idea for your mountain-esque wedding venue! Just clean this cake up and you can make changes as you see fit to work with your theme. The base for the cake I think will really pull the cake into your theme, whatever you do choose.

Just to clarify, I was referring to the wood-slab cake in this comment :)

  • I think it looks delicious. It isn't like you are serving slurpees from 7-11 (although that would be AWESOME). I think it is great for your venue.

  • The cake looks pretty and different also delicious.  I am a big fan of icing do I'd be a bit disappointed in that sense.

If you're going to do something like this, please allow me to recommend White Cherry Icees and Disaronno.
