What do you wear outside of work? I need help

So as I'm packing for my 3 day weekend in NYC, I just got depressed because I have like NO clothes that aren't work clothes (business/ office). I packed the 2 loose casual tank tops that I've been wearing for years and 2 pairs of shorts from American Eagle (kinda like a khaki material but in black & grey). I packed these same items for my last 4 vacations. Like I dunno, all my friends on FB always have these adorable outfits in their pictures and I'm always wearing a ratty Bruins t-shirt or that same striped tank top. I love sundresses but when I'm walking around all day I need sneakers so clearly that doesn't work.
My grandma gave me an early wedding check and I may go try to up my wardrobe to look like an actual 30 year old woman....what do you wear? What brands or types of shirts? If you go out on a dinner date, or just walking around a city?

  • I'm a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl.  Though I prefer my t-shirts to come from L L Bean, they hold up much better.  I like The Loft and New York & Company for dressier stuff.  I haven't really done much clothes shopping since before I got pregnant the first time.  I'm planning a major shopping spree once I get my body back in shape after this little one is born.

  • I like ModCloth when I feel like splurging, but mostly Target, TJ Maxx, random cheap shit.

  • I have a few pairs of Cole Haan flats I wear for walking, but if I'm just around town at home, I wear flip flops. I wear the shoes with jeans, leggings, or capris. I have khaki capris or jean capris. I own a ton of tanks for when I'm out around home, but I primarily wear tees from J Crew when doing sightseeing.

  • @lolo883 me too! I got this at marshalls like 5 years ago and I wear it to death...

  • Loft, Gap, Old Navy, Target. I wear a lot of sundresses or just shorts and tanks.

I try to get cuter tanks (silky ones vs. ribbed ones) but I have also been in a rut lately.

  • I think shopping at 30ish is the hardest shopping.  Maybe thats just because I am 30 though.  I feel too old for so much clothing and too young for all the other stuff.  Right now I am looking sooo so stylish in my worn out cutoff shorts and a tank top, luckily no one has to see me looking like this.

I am also mostly a jeans and blouses kind of girl.  I go for more fitted jeans and flowy tops.  I like silk button ups or other soft tops.  I am a texture person, I will buy something because I like the way it feels and notice how it looks second, and I will refuse to buy something cute because it doesn't feel nice.

I second cheap stores, I wear a ton of TJmaxx, Target, Marshalls stuff as my weekend wear as I can feel free to buy a bit more trendy (and less classic) knowing that it is cheap so I won't feel bad when it gets worn out.

When I am on vacation I wear sundresses a lot because I think it makes packing easier.  Rather than try to plan around sneakers, I spent time and research finding cute-ish comfortable shoes that I could wear with sundresses.  I think Ked type shoes look cute with dresses, or I wear sandals, or toms. I put insoles into almost every shoe I own and that has really helped.
  • I'm mostly a jeans/t-shirt and sundressess girl. I'm in a bit of a shoe rut right now. For some reason I don't like sandals (other than flip flops), so summer is always more difficult for me, shoe-wise.

  • Target for maxi dresses, and Bob's Stores for random clearance clothes.

  • @steph11814 same here! I think all sandals like gladiator or strappy are hildeous, and I can't wear flip flop more than a 20 minute walk. And i cant stand sperrys or boat shoes. Maybe I'll have to check out some of @Jells2dot0‌ Cole haan shoes.
I used to wear all these awesome bright colored Nike airs....but now my friend have 10 year daughters who wear the same ones so I feel ridiculous wearing them.

  • Jeans, t-shirts, blouses, dresses (I love dresses and I get a lot of them from Modcloth), leggings, boots, flats, shades, flats, a couple of cute jackets, and sweaters.
    image
  • My weekend stuff is mostly target and old navy. @JasperandOpal‌ I'm 30 and feel the same way! Just had this convo with my SIL the other day. I feel like an awkward teen all over again.

@jenna8984 I do like boat shoes, but I mostly stick with ballerina flats in the summer.

  • Ditto Francesca's and Target.  I also get a lot of cute weekend tops from J. Crew on sale (and if you're a student or teacher, extra discount!)  I've had good luck at Madewell sales lately, but it's way too expensive to shop until things go 50% off sale price.

Lately I've been getting a lot of wear out of these pants, because they are so lightweight and can be dressed up or down.

@JCbride2015 where are those pants from? want... need...

edited because I now see the link in your post. yay!
  • Ditto JasperanOpal. But I hate a lot of styles now anyways. Everything is so baggy and shapeless in the tops that it just makes everyone look fat (unless you're 5'10" and about 105lbs). I have curves damn it, and I want to show them off!! Anyway, I'm not really any help, since I work in Lulu and relax in Lulu. Sometimes Nike and Under Armour too. I do like INC brand at Macy's, and we've got a store here called RW and Co. that does a lot of nice casual stuff.

  • Ditto @lolo883  I love ModCloth.  They've got such a wide range of clothing.

I'm just a T shirt and jeans girls on most occasions.  I like graphic tees though, and there's a company called Society 6 that does a whole bunch of designs on American Outfitters shirts.  I've found that they've held up pretty well, but I've only had them a couple of months.  They do go through the wash once a week though.

Yay! I have them in black and the light gray. I hit a really good sale and got 30% + 20% off. Can you tell I like sales? ;)

  • I live in summer dresses in the summer. Casual/cotton dresses, maxi dresses, cute little dresses, dressier dresses.... Yeah. And flats or flip flops. I'm not a huge shorts person but I have a few pairs. Before our HM I bought a ton of old navy tanks and short sleeve shirts that were on sale. They are great with skirts or shorts or jeans. Just versatile and 'wear whenever' kinda clothing.

  • I can safely say I do not dress like a grown up. I'm currently wearing a tank top from the girls section at Target, black shorts, and black and white argyle knee socks with combat boots.

But girl, you gotta check out www.polyvore.com it's not a shopping website exactly but rather it lets you put together outfits and looks! Srsly, it's amazeballs. Really playing on there with different looks and ideas helped me figure out what I like, what I don't like, what looks work, what looks make me look like I'm high. I can waste hours on there.

I love Target, Ross, Goodwill, yard sales, modcloth if I have money, occasionally Hot Topic still, I have trouble in some stores because I'm small, and for some reason "Ladies Petite" is always cardigins and slacks and I do not dress like that. If I dressed like that people would think I had a court date. So I end up in the kids section trying not to dress like a kid. JCPenny's junior section isn't too bad for me. And Express. I love Express. But you gotta wait for the sale. No sale, no go.
  • I have a pair of Keds that I am basically obsessed with. They are sneakers and provide support, but they are also cute and a little sparkly, which makes them work with more outfits. I also have a pair of gold Sperrys that I wear constantly with all kinds of outfits. I felt silly paying 80-something bucks for a pair of gold boat shoes but I wear the crap out of them.

  • @magicink That's one of my favorite episodes of Will & Grace! I also love the one where Matt Damon pretends to be gay to be on the choir.

  • I just wanted to say I think everyone's suggestions are really good.

This might just be me personally, but I don't know that I'd use my grandmother's wedding gift to spend on clothes for myself... I dunno. I know it's yours and your FI's money and you both can do whatever you want with it, but that was just my initial impression.

Oh that one was awesome! I was looking for a good Karen drinking one (I love Karen) but then this one just made me crack up laughing. And it was a hilarious episode, especially when she described all the things she's into.

Oh yea good call! FI complained about the same thing while we were packing so I said WE should go shopping together and get some new things, not just me. I'm cheap so I only meant spending like $100 of it and not the whole thing. Which really, I don't even know why I mentioned the gift because I certainly have $100 in my checking account that I could use lol

  • YOU NEED STITCH FIX! It is perfect for trying to branch out and try new things. It's a monthly service that sends you new clothes to check out. There's a $20 fee for each box, and then if you keep anything in the box (I've never gotten one where I didn't keep at least one thing) that's deducted from it. Seriously, check it out. It won't buy you a whole wardrobe in a day, but it's a good way to add new styles to your closet over a few months time.

I love me some colored jeans/capris. When I'm not working, I'm usually wearing some colored pants and a flowy blouse with some flats. I have sparkly gold flats I wear all the time. For the short term (while you're waiting for your first Stitch Fix!) I'd say go to the mall and find a lot of pieces that will go with different things. Maybe pieces you could work bits from your work wardrobe into. I love a good flowy black top because I can wear with a tight mini skirt and heels and dress it up, or throw it on with a pair of capris and dress it down. Also find some casual dresses that you are comfortable with wearing out and about.

Adding a couple of our engagement pictures to show what I mean:

This dress. I love this dress. It's so flowy and comfy and great. I wear it all the time.

This black flowy shirt was from Stitch Fix. I wear it with so many things. It so versatile.
    image

Even if stuff like this isn't your style at all, the point is the same - versatile, comfy pieces that you can wear over and over again and feel like YOU in.

  • There is never anything wrong with a bruins tshirt. Ever. :)
  • Honestly I am a fan of a comfy dress or a tshirt/cute top with shorts and flats. I am super picky about sandals and not a fan of most of the shoe trends so I have some comfy flats and flip flops or if they match I will wear my pumas.
