What do you wear outside of work? I need help

Re: What do you wear outside of work? I need help

  • Some of you guys really sightsee and walk around a city all day wearing flats or boat shoes or flip flops? Without socks? And it doesn't kill your feet? I can't imagine doing that, I'm such my mother with hardcore walking shoes and ankle socks.

  • I tend to dress more on the casual side. In the summer, I wear a lot of dresses - both short and long. I have a few pairs of cute shorts. A lot of days, I wear jeans and fitted t-shirts. A lot of them I've gotten from The Gap or J Crew.

For dressier tops for going out, I actually tend to have a lot of luck at Forever 21. I've also gotten a few cute things at Banana.

I wear the same flats that I wear to work they're the kind with actual cushioning and a little arch support. and I have those little ped socks so my shoes don't get stinky lol
  • I'm old, I wear what I want. I'm also fat, so I wear what fits :P

Sorry, I know that's no help. Wear what makes you feel good!

I tend to need a little arch support or cusion, but otherwise yup, shoes without socks all the time. My only problem with flats is that my feet get sweaty in them, I try to get some insoles that suck up the feet sweat for them. And flip flops are a must in my neck of the woods. I like stacked ones myself.

Oh yeah.  I rarely wear socks unless I'm working out.

Sneakers are trendy now, so yeah if I'm wearing sneakers I wear socks.  But boat shoes, ballet flats, nope nope nope.  One of my friends always wears those little beige thin socks with everything, even high heels, and it looks so bad but I just would never say anything to her.  It totally takes away from the shoe.

If I were going to walk around NYC all weekend, here is exactly what I'd bring from my shoe shelf.  I'd wear no-show black socks with the Nikes.

  • I absolutely walk around in flip flops! I wear them year round here in AZ. I even wear them to work since work is super casual most of the time. I loathe socks.

Lol maybe its just me being from new England and always having freezing feet. And I just don't like the feeling of bare feet on the floor, when I'm at home I always walk around and sleep in socks.
What brands of flip flops have good arch support? My pair for the beach are just the $3 old navy crap.

  • I pretty much live in flip flops all summer long. This includes when I'm doing a lot of walking.

I forgot - Express can also have some really cute dressier options.
  • I hate socks. Despise them. I only wear no-show ones when I'm working out, boot socks when I'm wearing tall boots, or tall ones when I'm hiking. Otherwise, no socks touch my feet.

In summer, I live in dresses and sandals or shorts and a flowy top, no matter where or how long I'm walking.

But yeah, the old navy things are crap. I wear them around the pool and lake, but that's it. My mother has arch support issues but can usually manage in Birkenstocks. Most of my sandals come from Target (not great quality or support, but they're $15, cute enough, and will last me a summer or two), DSW, J Crew, or department stores (Nordstrom and Macy's especially when they have shoe sales).

  • I primarily wear flip flops from J Crew and Havaianas. I also have two pairs of Fit Flops, which are super comfortable.

I hate socks and avoid them at all costs. @jenna8984, my favorite flops are Clarks. They are leather and look nicer but also have support. The pair I have now are a couple years old and I still wear them all the time.

  • I also hate socks. I only wear them when necessary. And you know what's annoying? Even the super super short socks still stick out of my sneakers at the gym. I feel like it makes me look like such a dork.

Reef flip flops are probably my favorite.
  • I'm 35 and it's hard. I used to live in sundresses and flip flops or sneakers on weekends. Now, it's jeans or shorts, cute t-shirts or tops, and either flip flops, walking sandals (LOVE Merrells), or Cole Haan wedges.

I also live in cardigans. They're a favorite. For me, the key is clothing that fits properly and is in a flattering color. I range deom jeans from Old Navy that I've had for decades to stupid expensive t-shirt-y things I've picked up in random shops.

  • I'm so seasonal with socks.  Can't stand them in the summer and rarely wear them, but love putting them on in the winter cos they keep my feet warmer.  I only wear little ankle socks though, unless it's a dressy event with dark trousers.  Then I wear black dress socks.  These are my favourite socks, but I like them with the heel tab on the back.  Less blisters.

I mostly wear dresses/skirts during the summer. I'm not a huge fan of shorts, but i'll also wear skinny jeans/colored jeans and a tank top.

I generally wear flats or low wedges, these are currently my faves from Modcloth <---clicky I walk 5-7 miles every day in these (I have them in all the colors!) and they're awesome. Plus, they go with pretty much everything!

    ETA: picture difficulties!
  • I mean for example, DH and I are going to NYC for a week and I'm planning on wearing primarily flip flops, ballet flats, and Toms knock offs from Payless (they're awesome). I have noticed in the last year or so that my feet hurt wearing just flip flops way more than they used to. Maybe I'm getting old and creaky in my 28 years.

  • I walked a billion miles around DC wearing Pumas a couple years ago and thought I had collapsed my arches. Hurt SO BAD I could barely hobble around. I had to wrap them up in Ace bandages. So, sneakers aren't always the answer.

However, I meandered Sao Paulo in these without a problem.

I wanna get some Reefs for when we go to Spain, if I can find cute enough ones.

  • I wear flip flops all over NYC all the time. Moved here six years ago and I've never had issues.

The issue I DO have, however, is what I like to call "city feet". I mean, they get DIRTY.

  • Honestly I am a fan of a comfy dress or a tshirt/cute top with shorts and flats. I am super picky about sandals and not a fan of most of the shoe trends so I have some comfy flats and flip flops or if they match I will wear my pumas.

I think we have the same closet.

I have some really cool sparkly Puma flats (they don't look anything like athletic shoes) that I get a lot of use out of, and they're soooooo comfortable.

ohgodyes. It's gross. But the alternative is sweating in closed toes and nobody wants that either. Have you seen the "city foot wipes" that Birchbox sells? I'm tempted.

No, I haven't. But I have a scrubby thing I use at the end of the day to wash them. I also put a really good lotion on them with socks to prevent the stanky dry heels I also get.

    My feet can get gross.

  • @lolo883 I totally have those aerosoles and they are awesome but still cut into my toes after a few hours.

So we had a great time in NYC, and cleaned up with some outfits! H&M is always hit or miss for me but it was a hit this time. I got 5 tank tops and a skirt and FI got 2 shirts and 1 shorts and total for all was $90. Woo!!

  • For travel, I swear by a pair of dark blue jeans ( I tend to go for old navys sweetheart boot cut). Can dress down with a t shirt and sneakers or dress up with a dressy top from ann taylor, loft, jones ny, or banana, heels and jewelry/hair/make-up.

As a Floridian, I live in sandals /flipflops from march until November when I'm not working. Ive even mastered the art of running in flippies without hurting my feet or falling on my face.

Op, dark jeans and a dark pair or three of denim shorts with some fitted t shirts and fluttery ones should work. Avoid gladiator sandals unless you want to face evil chipmunk and the "tiger" pictured below in the ring of battle :-)
