Ok, so for my birthday back in June, DH got me a coupon for skydiving.  He didn't buy anything, it was just a print out of the company as a date suggestion.  He's totally cool if we don't do it, and do something even more exciting instead, such as mini putt.  ;)  I think it would be pretty cool, and I'm not scared about skydiving per se, but more that the chute won't open.  It is a tandem jump.

Do we go, or do I continue with my boring but alive existence??  Anyone done a tandem jump before??  Any suggestions or tips??

ETA - Will be a post and run

  • I've always wanted to go skydiving!  I say go for it!

AHH! Go do it (if you don't hate heights or planes of course)!!! You will feel like such a badass afterward. I did a tandem jump two years ago in Las Vegas (our office's yearly incentive reward). It was fantastic but yeah, I almost peed my pants while we got strapped up.

The tandem jumps are great because you don't do anything except basically get out of the guy's way. They'll teach you a couple poses before you suit up - it's basically keeping your arms away from the guy and pulling your legs in when you land so he can do the landing without anyone's legs breaking. I went with a co-worker who has done a few solo jumps and he said it was actually more fun to do the tandem because you get to look around and yell and whatnot without having to worry about altitude, speed, when to pull the chute, etc.

My partner reminded me that I'm more likely to die driving to work every day than I am jumping out of a plane with him (kind of a wonky statistical comparison, but you get it).

If you are nervous getting suited up though, I will say, try not to be the last one in the plane - because then you're the first one out. I sat on the edge of a plain with my legs dangling out for a couple minutes while everyone prepped. Terrifying.

H is airborne qualified, but I love getting to tell him that I've done free falling and he hasn't. Seriously, go do it. It's terrifying, but so much fun. I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I could. (sorry this was long).

  • I'm pretty adventurous and I love trying new things. However, skydiving is not on my list. Even doing a tandem jump, I'd be scared about parachute problems.
  • Do it & tell us all about it afterwards! I've always wanted to, so until I do, I will live vicariously through you ;-)

  • I love skydiving. I've jumped twice(tandem) and want to go again. ------------------------------------------ You don't even feel like you are falling because there is no point of reference at 13000 feet. Or there wasn't when I was in Jersey and Indian jumping. Now I wonder when I jump here in the mountains if it will be different? Ummmm??----------------------------------------------------------------- I hate rollercoasters. People think it's funny I love sky diving. When my dad comes to visit we are going to para-gliding up in Aspen.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Yeah, heights and the jumping doesn't bother me so much.  It's the potential splat at the end.  I always figured chute problems must suck, cos then you spend the next few minutes knowing you're going to splat into the ground and there's not much you can do to stop it.

I figure though that tandem jumps must be pretty safe since the other guy wants to make it too.

I went skydiving and it was really scary, but empowering. A good friend of mine went skydiving every weekend.  I figured the company had a really good track record because he would show up to work every monday.   So my sister and I went.  Caught on video, I said,"This is really fucking stupid!" Lol.  I don't think I would go again... maybe I would.
You never sleep so hard in your life than after your first jump. Once you adrenaline subsides... instant hibernation. I still get a little creeped out when I hear a prop plane, or open a bread box (the door to the airplane i jumped out of resembled a rolling door to a bread box. lol) It was a great experience that I will remember forever, even though it was a little scary. I find scuba diving was scarier.
The scariest part of skydiving is when the parachute opens (i know... it not opening would be really scary.  Lol) When the chute opens, you feel like you have hit ground, because you meet a lot of force when opening the parachute.  The slow decent to the ground is the worst part. (I HATE FERRIS WHEELS)  Anytime I feel like i am lingering on the verge of death, it is terrifying.  I would rather meet it with a catapult.  The free fall is so much fun.  You don't even feel like you are falling, but like you are floating. There is nothing like it in this world
  • Its fun! I have been 3 times. All were when I was in college, so I can't actually say I would go again. I think I would be much more scared now. I wasn't scared at all when I went. But I did have an oh crap moment when I looked out the window and saw that we were in the air.

If you want to pull the shoot, they will let you. If you say you want but then don't pull it when you are supposed to, the instructor will pull it for you. If a bird flys into your instructor and knocks him unconcious, the backup parachute will open once you get to a certain altitude. I say go for it! And get the video if you go, it goes by in a blur.

  • Do it! So much fun. I did a tandem jump... had complete confidence in the dude I was strapped to. what got me was I just expected it to be like in movies where they sort of roll out the door of a giant plane... nope, tiny plane, where you had to STEP OUT ONTO A LEDGE and hold onto the wing, and when he taps on your shoulder you jump off in a backflip. But until then, you're just STANDING OUTSIDE OF THE PLANE thinking of nothing except that people belong INSIDE planes.

All told though, completely awesome. You really don't feel like you're falling since you're so high up... just seems like you're floating with a lot of wind in your face. And it's really cold. And if you're me, you scream SHITSHITSHITSHITGODDAMMITFUCK! on the video, which Mom wasn't too pleased about. Wear pants you don't care about; mine ripped when we landed.

I did it once. I'm glad I had the experience, but it's not something I would do again. Like lolo and lynda said, you don't really feel like you're falling since the ground is so far away. And for me, in that moment, I didn't really care about crashing. There's too much "this is amazing" to worry about potential problems. I have a few friends who have had skydiving accidents (they dived regularly so their risk was higher of course) so it's not something I'd do again. But I'm really glad to have had the experience and wouldn't take it back.

To the bolded...because for me I would pee in them.  Legit.  I would pee on my instructor-person like a Chihuahua...

I say if you are up for it, you should go.  My friend went and her chute didn't open but the reserve did.  I mean, that's why they have these things so she shrugged it off.  She said she'd go again.  Nothing phases her...
