To those of you who buy expensive workout pants

If I buy something nicer than my 8 year old Old Navy yoga pants, will they keep my fat from shaking like jello in a shiatsu chair every time I try to run? I already sound like a herd of elephants on the treadmill, but when the noise makes the whole gym turn to stare and judge I'd prefer if my ass wasn't moving independently of the rest of my body. :-/

There's a Lulu and a Lucy store near my office but I've never worked up the courage to even try anything on. All the people in there have legs smaller than my arms so I don't even know if they have a size big enough for my thunder thighs. :-(

Sorry if mobile TK eats my paragraphs.

I think Lulu goes to size 12, maybe 14, but they do have 12's for sure.  I don't think they'll keep your ass from jiggling though.  I wear a 6 in their pants, and I'm pretty sure my ass still jiggles when I do anything like running.

ETA Lulu also has some compression type capris, so maybe they'd help keep everything tucked in a bit more??  I'm not sure though.  They're called "In the Flow Crop II"  I just like them for the pattern in the fabric

  • @lolo883 I hope at least some that talk about the giggling was a joke.  You send me pics of you in your dress.  I can't see the jiggling being too much of a problem, or you sounding like a heard of elephants.

That said, don't worry so much about it.  Almost everyone in every gym I've ever been to (including the ones in Thailand) giggled on the treadmill.  In order to stop it, you need to be ridiculously skinny.  Embrace it!

Oh there's a LOT of jiggle. And it's not even so much about people looking at me (though I hate that); it's physically uncomfortable. :-/

I think "In the Flow Crops" are more for yoga than running. I find the Lulu yoga stuff doesn't have the compression so it doesn't help with the jiggle problem. I have the "Run Inspire crops" for running. They are compression and I don't feel jiggly at all when I wear them. With the compression stuff I have to get a size bigger than I normally wear.

  • If you are mentally prepared to shell out $100+, nothing beats CW-X capris or pants. That shit binds you like a mummy. It's a work out just getting them on. Nothing will move. They sell them at running stores and probay big sporting goods stores like Dicks.

  • I second the Inspire crops from Lulus. I definitely feel like they are supportive.

Please don't feel like you can't walk in there. You are working out and you deserve to feel comfortable just like everyone else.

Yup, they're technically for yoga.  I use it all for everything though.  I actually don't do yoga anymore, and haven't for quite a while.

  • Upon further investigation, my ass is definitely too fat for Lulu. :(

Yes he is.  According to him, I'm too fat for Lulu pants, based on the size I wear.

  • I think LuLu are more for yoga like activity. I think nike makes the best capris, I get them at marshalls or tj max. I just bought some great workout tanks at old navy though, I think they redid their workout gear. Might want to check them out too.

  • I ordered some compression capris from Under Armour that looked like they might be big enough, although some of the reviews said they fall down. Anybody have experience with those??

  • Well, if it's physically uncomfortable, that's a different point.  I hope you find some good pants.

  • I got some amazing Capri ones from tjmaxx that I loved so much I went back to get another pair. I can't frigen remember the brand right now but they were like $15. Key is they are spandex-y (not cotton) but the black is really slimming. No way in hell I'd spend $100 on Lulu. Even the Nike ones are TJ are great.

I have some UA compression pants. They do fall down a bit in the crotch. It's weird-the waist doesn't really move, somehow you just end up all bunched like you have a nice package between your thighs. But UA has a bunch of different cuts/materials so I can't say I have the same ones you do.

  • I just bought these from Athleta and they are the strongest compression capris I've ever owned.  I swear they are tighter than my Spanx.

I haven't tried Underarmour tights, sorry.

  • I've really come to find that with work out pants, you get what you pay for. Any time I've spent $$$ on pants (or tops or bras), I find that I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality. My Gap Body pants do a decent job of holding my muffiny top excess in.
  • Big fan of the Old Navy compression pants over here. I have full pants, capris, shorts. I love them and they are really reasonably priced.

  • I'll have to check out Old Navy and TJ's tonight... see what I can cram my lardass into. I threw away half my clothes yesterday because they don't fit. It was not a good weekend. :(

I was just going to suggest Athleta! They are fantastic! (I have actually worn a pair for Spanx-like purposes once, haha)

I used to work for Banana Rebublic (same company as Gap/Athleta/Piperlime) and got them with my employee discount.

They are a little on the pricey side (though not as expensive as Lulu), but they last forever. I have one pair that I bought in 2008-ish that are still in great condition. I wear and wash them (with no special care taken) 2-3 times per week and they don't look worn at all. I have also grown considerably in the ass width department since then (I have probably gained 20-30 lbs - damn kids!), so they have had to do quite a bit of stretching, but they still compress incredibly well.

ETA: I am a size 14 or 16, and am wearing the large, currently. However, if I were buying new ones, I would probably size up to the XL because of the weight gain.
  • @ashley8918 do you feel like they're pilling/wearing out quicker/getting see-through with the additional weight?

Not at all! I actually have them in my gym bag for tonight, so I'll see if I can get a good close up of the fabric later.

P.S. One of my biggest complaints with workout pants/yoga pants is the see-through factor! Especially with the spandex-y/tights-type pants. I find that I have that issue with the cheap pairs (Walmart, Target, Old Navy, etc.), probably due to the size of my badonkadonk. Because of that, I pretty much only wear my super old Athleta pants, haha. Now you've got me wanting a new pair! Maybe a grey to switch it up a bit... hmmm.
  • I have a few pairs of Adidas capris.  I got them from Dick's.  I always lean towards workout pants that have a wider waist band because they don't cause the muffin top nearly as much as those skinny waist bands do.  I also purchase pants that aren't made of cotton/non moisture wicking material because they "breathe" better, reduce pilling/wearing out in the inner thigh area and don't show my swamp ass when I get a good sweat going :)

  • I am too big for Lulu and I run, too. :) I love my Nike capris. They have some compression, but best of all, they have a draw string at the waist that keeps everything in place. The ones sold at TJs and Marshalls don't, and that always ends up being my problem.

I totally agree with this. I NEED the wide waistband.

Also, I am DYING over the swamp ass comment. It is so true!
  • Yeah the wide waistband is why I still wear my old-as-dirt fold-over yoga pants... but I need to strap this ass down or it's gonna take flight.

  • Are you wearing yoga/general workout pants from Old Navy, or the compression ones? I've found their compression tights do the most "locking down" of any of my workout pants (I bought them a size smaller than I usually do).

Apart from those, I second Nike and Adidas, and this is just another vote for CW-X--not only are they tight, they have seaming and "extra" support in strategic places to not only keep everything "in," but support it, too. I swear my triathlon shorts that they make are doing the bulk of the work to keep my hip together when I run.

  • @KatieinBkln these are just the regular old, fold-over waistband, flare-leg capri, cotton spandex yoga pants. I think I bought them before compression was "a thing." I may have bought them before the internet was "a thing." They're that old. No technical features whatsoever besides "pants that are kind of stretchy."
