(NWR) Removing printing from glassware?

So, I went out drinking with FI, one of my BMs and her BF last night. Super fun, but the drinks were super expensive because they came in a "souvenir" glass. They're actually really nice glasses, so we took them home and we want to use them, but they say "Little-Ass Beer" and the bar's name and logo on them.

I'm not quite sure how to describe the printing: it looks like those personalized glasses the Knot Shop sells (http://weddingshop.theknot.com/personalized-shot-glassvotive-holder.aspx) so not etched into the glasses, but raised.

I'm having trouble getting the printing off; I've washed them, tried acetone and scraping them off with a razor blade and so far nothing :[ Google hasn't given me much either, possibly because I'm not using the right words to describe the printing. Any suggestions?

  • My suggestion would have been nail polish remover, but it sounds like that didn't work.  Is it more like a sticker, or printed ink??

  • Maybe silk-screened? I tried to see if the bar chain's website had a description of the glass in their shop, but they only sell it in-store

  • Rubbing alcohol? I don't know how much that will help since you tried acetone though.

DH says make a paste out of sugar. He said to search removing screen printing from cars and you should have good results.

  • Did you try legit acetone, or acetone-based nail polish remover? Because acetone-based nail polish remover is not really pure acetone.

Any abrasive would maybe work too, like sugar in the PP above.

  • I used nail-polish remover, but scrubbed for a bit with it and got nothing. Can you explain the sugar-paste idea a bit further? Do I scrub with it, leave it on? How do you make it?

  • You scrub with it. A sugar cube would be easiest. You could also make a paste with sugar and water. Basically using it as an abrasive.

I found this when I Googled it:

  • I removed screen printing from a beaker using Solujet and a strong solution of potassium hydroxide; it only worked on one beaker, so your mileage may vary.

And I don't imagine that's household-common. I'm interested, too - I broke my plain beaker on Saturday (much sadness) and I'd like another one if I can make it quickly!
