I managed to break my e-ring.

Friday afternoon before leaving work I realized my center stone was askew. A quick-thinking coworker told me to put the ring in a baggie, and good thing she did--- by the time I got home a prong was completely broken off and the center stone was completely out of the ring.

We took it to the jeweler on Saturday and as he was examining it, he said, "Wow, the prong's completely off. Oh, this is platinum. Yeah, that's really hard to do. You probably knocked it on something at just the right angle..."

Yeah, thanks, trust me of all people to break a platinum ring. Our bathrooms at work require one to scan their badge for the door to unlock. I'm pretty sure I whacked my hand against the heavy-duty door jam there.  I'm so pissed at myself!  FI just keeps making fun of me for being a klutz.  I usually tell him (after knocking my hip, my toe, tripping, or whatever) how klutzy I am and he always says, "Oh, you're not a klutz."  How ya like me now!?

I'll be without the ring for a week and it feels so weird.  I'm actually worried people will notice (a friend noticed) and speculate something's wrong and we called off the wedding or something.

Am I the only klutz here or....?

  • That's amazing to break platinum! I'm sorry that's happened. If you're concerned about what others think, can you wear another ring on that finger so "no ring" doesn't draw attention?

  • FSIL broke her ring, and didn't notice until the diamond had fallen out. Fortunately, they found it and were able to get it fixed. I haven't broken my ring, but I've damaged plenty of things with it. My setting is really high/large (lots of metal in the setting) so I bonk it against things all the time, and it usually wins.

  • Less than a month after I got my ring, my dog pulled me out my front door really hard, and I scraped my ring, wrist (nice scar!), watch, and vivofit.  Luckily it was the underside of the ring that hit the door frame, so that is where the scratches are.

I told my mom that it was damaged and she was like "what is it, plastic?  Gold doesn't scratch!"  Wrong, old lady!!

  • I'm glad you noticed and got everything safely tucked away. I knocked my ring on my suitcase (soft side) this spring and the centre stone became a little loose too. That thing was immediately in a little pouch for safe keeping.

  • I'd be pretty skeptical about the prong being platinum to begin with. Sounds shady.

  • @Sugargirl1019 I did want to wear another ring, even my future wedding ring, but it just seemed weird too. No win!

@lolo883, the ring is from a reputable, family-owned-for-generations jeweler. I don't doubt that it's platinum.  The way the ring is set the prongs are very tiny. It's a sapphire (oval and shallow) set in a diamond halo so the prongs are only perhaps 3 millimeters long by 1 millimeter thick.  Since the entire setting rises off my finger quite a bit, frankly I'm not surprised I busted this thing a long time ago.

It seems the jeweler is fixing it for no charge, but thank goodness for insurance anyway.

  • FI had my setting custom-designed.

When they first cast it (platinum), they messed up and only put in four prongs.

He made them redo it for six prongs because he doesn't trust me not to do what you just did. Rightly so, in my case.

I still check the stone every time I bang my hand - it's an heirloom diamond that belonged to his grandmother.

It's going to be a long lifetime.

  • That is so stressful. I still can't believe I have not lost my ring. Which I am incredibly happy about. I am always having to put new tape around the underneath to make it a little tighter. I am a size 5 which fits perfectly when my fingers swell, but anytime I am cold it is ready to slip right off.

The higher the karat, the easier it will be to scratch.

  • FI thinks I'm strange for not wanting to wear my e-ring after the wedding. I'm always worrying about destroying it and think it would be much easier just to stop wearing it. I love it but it's more important to me to have it than to wear it, if that makes any sense at all.

  • A stone fell out of my ring 2 weeks ago, and I'm still without a ring.  I feel naked.
  • That's crazy.  I'm glad you noticed before a stone fell out!

  • Wow, I guess platinum is pretty hard to break! But good thing you managed to save everything before the stone fell out somewhere! I managed to lose two of the little halo diamonds surrounding my sapphire on my e-ring. Cost me $57 each time to have them replaced. The jeweller was wondering how I did it...she double secured all the diamonds and sapphire before giving it back to me. Been a year since that and everything is in place now.

Oh no! It's a good thing you caught it! I ripped a small stone out with fuzzy mittens about a month after I got mine. It took a month to fix because I had to mail it to the jeweler. I know those feels.

Nobody said anything, or even noticed. The only person who did notice was a sister who hadn't seen the ring yet.

  • @loveislouder, yes, I'm a fidgety person too and I keep going to touch it out of habit... nothing. Naked.

For the others who have lost stones and whatnot... ugh. Hugs to all of us.

  • No. I reject that you managed to do such a thing, OP, because if you managed to do such a thing to platinum, there's no way in hell my poor beautiful sterling silver ring is gonna survive its lifetime with me. I bang mine and catch it on stuff and ... Nope. I'm just going to go be busy completely ignoring the existence of this thread and the non-existent incident which incited it.

(Seriously, OP, I'm so sorry that happened. I would be so sad. Hugs for you and itty bitty platinum bandaids for your ring.)

  • I completely bent my platinum ring! Don't ask me how but I managed to do it. I check my stone everyday, it has been loose twice since he gave it to me a Christmas. It's insured but it would break me heart if I lost it. The ring belonged to his grandmother and I have no idea how I would ever explain to FFIL that I lost his mother's ring.
  • the first engagement ring that I had, the diamond came out of it luckily it was within the warrenty so I brought it back to the store and they had me pick out another one, whatever ring that I wanted, and I got the money back for it towards a new ring. My fiance almost had a heart attack because I woke him up crying my eyes out because I lost the stone.

  • Don't worry.  It's not just you.  My dog ate mine - I left it on the coffee table while I was moisturizing my hands - and of course we rushed him to the vet.  The vet said not to worry, because dogs usually pass things like this, and only to bring him back if he started getting ill.  I was worried about a 12 lb mini schnauzer being able to pass something that size.  Well, I was right.  But he did puke it up about three days later...  Under my bed; right in the middle of it.

Hopefully that makes you feel a little better.

  • I am so glad I have the ring I do. It looks like a wedding band. It's a gold band with nine channel set diamonds. I don't really have to worry about knocking the diamonds out. At least not until the edges start to wear down, which won't happen for awhile. My mom has an anniversary band that is very similar, and in the at least 10 years since Dad gave it to her, she's only had to have the sides built up once.

    How do you check it?

  • @missdelilah that's far above and beyond the "dog ate my homework" excuse, now isn't it.  Wow. Poor puppy and poor you!

  • He actually didn't seem to mind at all.  He was totally normal puppy for those three days.  I think poor FI, who had to diligently check the poop.

Actually, my mom outright lost hers.  We're really not sure what happened.  The last time anyone saw it was in the house, and she expected that she'd find it when we moved, but she never did.  There was a lot of feverish checking of the pockets of everything she owned, and moving furniture around, but it never turned up.  Thankfully everything was insured, but it doesn't replace the emotional significance of the item in the same way.

Yet another story to help you feel slightly less klutzy.
