I'm over thinking this, right?

I've got a wedding to go to over Labor Day weekend.  The colors are pretty diverse - navy blue, sky/baby blue, pink and gray.   My go to wedding guest dress is a short sleeve navy sheath dress but since I know the bridesmaids are wear short navy blue dresses, I don't feel comfortable wearing that.

I'm thinking about this dress (<-- click) as an option since it would be the right level of formality based on everything I've heard/seen.  I've got in the royal blue color.  This would work, right?  Just because two of the wedding colors are blue doesn't mean the whole blue spectrum is out for dress colors on guests?

My mom and sister both have me paranoid that wearing any shade of blue would be inappropriate.  Help!?

TIA.

  • I think you're fine. Especially since it's long and you said the bridesmaids are wearing short dresses.
  • Yep, you're good!

  • You are over thinking it. I honestly think that even the navy sheath dress is fine. I guarantee other people will be wearing navy. But I really like the royal blue one you picked. Your mom and sister are wrong - the whole spectrum of blue is not "off limits". For pete's sake...

  • I love the dress!

You could probably still get away with the navy though- just add some colorful accessories.

  • Thanks all!  I'm super excited about having another place to wear the dress so soon!  And it's one of my favorite colors.  I just got a little worried when my fairly traditional mom and definitely less traditional sister both agreed blue was totally out!

    Thanks for restoring my sanity!

  • Yup, you're good!
  • Shoot I've had friends tell me they're purposely trying to find something aqua to wear to my wedding. Wear what you like.

  • I had two 'real' bridesmaids, but I could have had five because three others wore navy dresses with nude heels. My BMs picked their own dresses so we laughed about everyone having great style and that was it. Don't be paranoid, it's not a big deal.

I think you're fine! That dress isn't as dressy as a bridesmaid/wedding party dress would be, so no one will think you are inappropriate. Nobody can expect blue to be out! It's such a common color for dress events! If it and the wedding colors were like seafoam green or fushia, and the dress was bedazzled, then I would side-eye you.

    It's so cute!

  • Thank you. I just ordered that dress. Love it!
  • Oh man, I love it!  I think I might order it for a wedding that I have coming up...

  • You're over-thinking it. My colors were cobalt blue and scarlet. Quite a few of our guests came in some shade of blue or another. I didn't even think of it until I saw pictures.
