Jealous whining

I am doing the jealous whining today.

So I have been out of work for three months. I have been searching for work this whole time, and have yet to get so much as a single interview.

Today, I found out that my brother is going to be promoted from Security Guard to Assistant Manager at his Wal-Mart. He will be making $50k per year.

I am jealous, and kind of angry. Not with my brother, but with the system. I did everything right--never did drugs, never got drunk, went to college and graduated cum laude. I pay for all of my own stuff, and haven't asked my parents for money once since losing my job. But I can't get a damn job. My brother is getting over a drug habit, never did more than a month of any post-secondary school, and still bums money off of Dad all the time. But he has been handed a great paycheck (more than my fiance makes, in an area with lower cost of living than ours) and I can't figure out what the difference is. I know life isn't fair, but seriously?

Thanks for letting me rant. Have a puppy gif.

That sucks. I hate it when stuff like that happens and all you can do is think 'life isn't fair". DH was unemployed from late January until last week. It was June before he got interviews, and he had about 4 or 5 before he got offered a job. I know it's tough but hang in there

What field are you trying to find a job in, OP? I had a college degree and when I first started out all I could find was temp work doing filing for an insurance company. Seriously, an 8 year old could have done it. But I worked my butt off and they moved me up quickly in the company.

Are you open to taking a step backwards to take a step forward?
  • @lc07 Absolutely open to entry-level stuff, if that's all I can get. I am looking at data analysis, administrative, and editorial work. I have three customized resumes so that I can quickly tailor my resume to the type of job I'm applying for. I just want a job at this point :(

Have you tried temp agencies? If you kill it it's quite possible that the employer will bring you on full time.

I temped for Siemens Medical for two years through Randstad. It was the best job I've ever had... but they still cut the position. And then the department I was in went under.

So yes, I am registered with temp agencies!

Also, I don't doubt that you aren't working your butt off trying to get a job so please understand I don't mean to sound patronizing.. Just trying to come up with ideas. But make sure you talk about your aspirations and skills when you are out socializing. You never know who will be like, "Oh! I know so and so is looking for someone exactly like you!" I find that when I put myself out there more and be vulnerable, opportunities present themselves.

I've found that auto insurance companies seem to have withstood the economic crisis fairly well. The ones in my area are constantly hiring. I guess people never fail to get into car accidents and since insurance is mandated that helps. I know some women who really love data analysis and administrative work for the company I used to work with. You don't happen to be in San Diego do you? I have some great connections at the company I used to work for even though I'm not there any more.
  • I've been out of work, too. It sucks hard core. Hang in there!
  • @lc07 No, you don't sound patronizing! I appreciate the offers. Unfortunately I am on the east coast, and FI loves his job so it's unlikely we'll relocate anytime soon.

Well, maybe check website of local insurance agencies to see if they have "hiring" pages!
  • I graduated from grad school last year, and spent the vast majority of the year unemployed. It was incredibly discouraging, especially since I was looking every day. FI and some of our friends were getting jobs in our field (same grad school program) and it was really hard not to be jealous and resentful. There were a lot of times when I honestly thought things would never get better.

Then I caught a break. I got a few interviews, and one of them led to a temporary job in my field. That job has now become permanent.

It will happen for you. Keep your chin up, talk to a counselor if you want to (I did), and don't compare your life to others'! It will make you miserable.

    You can do this.

Steph's advice is great. I've been self employed for 7 years so I'm kind of out of the regular corporate America life but is it appropriate to ask why you were not chosen for a job?

This is a very good thing to look into. A lot of employers will do debriefs with you if you ask.

When I was still looking for a job, I didn't want to ask because I already had low self-esteem and didn't want another reason to feel bad about myself. But I finally got the courage to ask for feedback, and it went so much better than I expected. The majority of employers won't be dicks about this and are happy to help.

I will ask, once I get an interview. That's the most discouraging part... I haven't gotten a single call back yet.

I did just revamp my resume last week, so hopefully I'm doing things better and will hear back from jobs in the future. The lady at the unemployment office turned my thoughts about resumes upside down!

Part of what was really frustrating for me coming out of school was that I was told I didn't get interviews or jobs because I was overqualified. They were afraid to hire me and have me move on as soon as I found something better. I just wanted a job!!! Arggghh..

  • Do you have a LinkedIn? DH had a couple companies contact him after viewing his profile and one looked like it could turn into a job but he accepted an offer at a different company because faster turn-around from interview to offer.

that's the thing. It costs money to hire and train an employee.  They don't want to waste their time and money on someone they know is looking for something better and will leave them.

Check out catering companies.  They are normally on-call type jobs that pay pretty well.  They are more likely to hire people who just want extra cash.   The jobs are often at night and weekends to it doesn't interfere with interviewing for normal 9-5 jobs.

  • Unfortunately nowadays it takes months before one can land a job again. I know what it's like but don't worry something will come up! Of course you'll find a job, just be a little more patient:) Now I'm feeling a little apprehension myself wondering how in the hell I'm going to find a job when I move to London!

  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I (kind of) know how you feel. When I graduated college it took me 4 months to find a job. I was waiting tables and working part time with a recreation department I worked for through college. I could not get an interview to save my life. I knew I would get hired once I got an interview because I excel in face to face situations. The only reason I got the interview and job I'm in now is because my old boss knows my new boss and told him to interview me.

Also, it is discouraging when I went to school and got my BS and will never make as much as FI. He is in school right now but made more than me this summer hwne he worked full time. He will have an associates degree.

Keep your head up! Something will come up!

  • When I moved back East from AZ, I was naive and thought my accounting degree and 3 years experience would instantly get me a job. Took me 6 months. There were a few companies that brought me back for 3 interviews and it down to myself and one other candidate and they kept choosing the other. I emailed the people who interviewed me and asked for any constructive criticism that may have helped me get the job and all of them something like "I have no advice for you- you were great and we loved you! But this person was the same as you and just happened to have experience with our particular softtware". It was always something that I really had no control over, which was super frustrating. But eventually it worked out, I took a lesser paying job but it was something. Same with my bro, barely graduated high school and he was making a ton selling high end cars. Keep your head up, it'll come together!!
