Because we love food- leftovers vs. fresh

What foods do you prefer when they are fresh opened/ cooked?

  • Olives. I absolutely love black olives but they taste so much better when a brand new can is opened rather than the ones I've had in the fridge for a few days.
  • French fries. I don't care if you heat them in a toaster or oven, they are still never as crispy as freshly fried!
  • Steak. I like mine rare and heating it up always cooks it through too much for me. Even 1 minute in a microwave can turn it from red to brown center.

What foods do you actually prefer when they are leftover?

  • Popcorn. I love leaving a few handfuls from the night and eating them the next day when they are just starting to go stale.
  • Eggs. I know we have a lot of egg haters on here. I dislike them cooked fresh (scrambled, omelet, fried) but I love them when hard boiled and eaten the next day.
  • Soda. I hardly ever have soda (maybe 4 times a year) because I'm just not a fan of the carbonation. So when I do buy one because I'm fiending for the taste of Dew or Root Beer, I'll take a small sip and put it in the fridge for a day and drink when it's almost flat.

Re: Because we love food- leftovers vs. fresh

  • Meatloaf. Cold leftover meatloaf sandwich with some ketchup? Heaven. And most soups and chili get better after a day or two.

Everything else has to be fresh. All my other leftovers used to get packed up in Tupperware and thrown away once they got moldy. I just don't eat them. Now, that's FI's job. :) He comes home for lunch nearly every day and polishes them off.

  • Fresh: agree with fries and steak!! I also need soda to be cold and fresh.

Leftovers- certain pizza, peeps, popcorn, au gratin potatoes

  • I also prefer flat soda. Something about the carbonation upsets my stomach.

When I make pepperoni rolls or chili, I eat a little the first day and then feast on leftovers. The flavors are just better the next day!

Fruit must be fresh. I really dislike canned fruit.

  • Chinese food, spaghetti, pizza, fried chicken = leftovers.

    Everything else I prefer fresh.

  • Pizza, chili, Chinese food, and chicken I like better the next day. All of it is usually eaten cold except the chili.

I definitely agree about the steak since I make it super rare, but if we have left over skirt steak I will totally use it up as cold steak sandwiches.

Forgot about chili! I can eat leftovers for a good week. Mmmm, now I want chili.

  • Definitely second the meatloaf and pizza as leftovers (cold slice of pizza for breakfast=heaven!) and I enjoy leftover/cold mashed potatoes. Really any kind of potato I will happily eat leftover.

I must have soda fresh though I drink that pretty rarely now. I also love bubby water and thanks to my SodaStream can now indulge in it whenever I want. I can easily drink a liter of that in a day so it doesn't have time to get flat.
  • Leftovers:
    Chili
    Pasta Salad
    Pulled Pork
    Chicken Pie

Fresh: Definitely steak, I eat mine really rare so heating it up over cooks it
    Mostly anything else

  • Everything fresh for me.  I always make extra and save the rest for lunches.  Funnily enough, I love it all for leftover lunch at work, but I'm not so hot on it for other leftovers.

  • I also agree with the chili! I made a humongo batch last weekend and that is all I ate last week. I was A-Ok with that.

Leftover: cookies (I like them better the next day when they are more crunchy), popcorn, thai food, meatballs

Fresh: fried chicken, roast, turkey...usually any meat.

  • Leftovers: same as pps--soup, chili, bbq items (pulled pork, potato salad, coleslaw), pasta salad, spaghetti; roast beef--slice it cold with lots of mayo, salt, and pepper on white bread, with tomatoes only if you have really good ones.  Mmmmmm....

Fresh: steak, potatoes, most meats that weren't listed in the leftovers.  I can't do fresh fruits and veggies because they make my stomach hurt like crazy, so they are always really well cooked or canned :(

  • Pizza, Chinese, and almost any soup/sauce food (thinking Baked Potato Soup and Jambayla) - the flavors meld and just get yummy!

  • Meatloaf is the pretty much the only thing I like next day.  Lasagna pretty good, but I never make it myself.   I pretty much hate all over forms of leftovers.  So much so I never bring home leftovers from a restaurant.  We try and cook just enough so we do not have leftovers.  If we do I will eat it for lunch the next day.

Now I will l make up meatballs or pulled pork in the crock pot and they freeze them for later.  I boil them in the bag to reheat.  I find they taste like they were freshly made that way.

My excuse to make chili in the summer: hot taco salad. I make a pot of chili and pour a scoop over lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese, and crunched up Doritos. SO GOOD.

Girl I don't even use the stove in the summer. Too hot for open flame. If it can't be cooked on the grill, in the crock pot or in the microwave, we don't eat it.

@lolo883 Do you have a pot that can withstand high temperatures?  Because you can absolutely put it on the grill.  FI has made spaghetti (sauce AND noodles) and even baked cookies (!) on the grill.

You can also do cobbler on the grill.  Pretty much anything you can put in a pot or pan can be cooked on the grill.

I have a cast iron pot, but I'm too lazy to give it the cleaning it needs. :) We've done campfire cobblers before, and I've made mac and cheese on the grill. It's not like I'm suffering grilling steak and corn though. ;)

  • Acceptable leftovers: Pizza, Chinese food, thanksgiving food, steak for steak sandwiches, fries are acceptable when reheated in the toaster oven with lots of cheese on top

    Fresh: Everything else

DH eats most of the leftovers in our house.

  • I can and will eat just about anything leftover. So much stuff tastes better left over, so I don't mind. However, I draw the line at seafood and fruit. Those must be fresh.

You don't have to wait just make the chili in the crock pot! That's the only reason I'm up and on here this early I got up to throw chili in the crock pot and corn bread in the oven before it got too hot to want the oven on.

I can't do the meat in the crock pot though... I have to brown it in a skillet before I throw it in. Skeeves me out otherwise. Plus I taste it a lot while it's cooking, so I need the meat to be edible right away.
