So my best friend is throwing a Halloween party at her house this year (her address sounds very fall/halloweeny too) and I am struggling to come up with any ideas at all. There will be a prize for best costume! I have waited patiently until September before asking others!

I would prefer to do a couple costume with H but can't think of anything creative and that wont break the bank!

I would love to hear about your best costumes!

Last few years;
2013 - H was Ron Burgundy and I was Veronica Corningstone (The movie Anchorman)
2012 - Large group that went as Harry Potter, I was Luna Lovegood and H was Professor Snape
2011 - Clue! This was may favorite ever! I was Mrs White with the lead pipe and H was Mr Green with the Rope (we did have all 6 characters)

Re: Your Best Halloween Costume!

  • I can't say how this would affect the bank, but a few years ago DH and I were The Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland. He is really tall and skinny, and we did his makeup just like the movie.. and we were super popular in the club that night! The costume was fantastic quality, complete with the hair and hat. We were super adorable legit.

I don't know if you remember the show Double Dare, but a few years ago FI and I went as Double Dare contestants. We got tons of compliments, and the best part was it was fairly affordable. We got the matching contestant shirts on Amazon for about 15 bucks each, then we bought matching track pants for another $15. The most expensive part was the helmets, which were about $25/each. FI then glued clear cups to the helmets with red "fill" lines taped on. ETA: We also got safety goggles which were like $5/each.

This (obviously) isn't us, but our costume was pretty similar:

  • About 70lbs ago, I was a slutty nun, and then the next year I got some kind of army girl costume and made it look less lame by combining it with stockings and a garter belt, and my great-uncle's WWII medals and dog tags.

Those were my best costumes to date.

Last year FI and I were zombie versions of Fred and Wilma Flintstone. I did the wounds with toilet paper, liquid latex, makeup and fake blood. You can't tell with the lighting in the kitchen, but our faces were grey and dead-looking. I was pretty proud of my neck wound. There was a flap of skin that kept sticking to my necklace. It was fun to stick my finger in.

(FI bought his costume, my dress was homemade, necklace was like a dollar and I spray painted it.)

  • I think our best Halloween costume was Beetlejuice and Lydia. I bought Fi's costume which I'm usually against, but upgraded the shirt and tie to some from his closet. I did the red wedding dress and made it out of 2 thrift store prom dresses that I took apart and a crap load of tulle.

  • We are going to be Gomez and Morticia Addams.

  • We were Fred and Wilma one year, we made both of our costumes, and it was really cute.

This year we are doing Dorothy and the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz.

This is what I was last year!  DH was a creepy priest, molest-ache and candy in his pocket included.

My favorite was back in my skinner/sluttier days, I simply took a Twister board, wrapped it 'round myself and wore the spinner around my neck.  You can guess how that night ended up.

    I'll keep you ladies posted! I'm a little short and curvy for the catsuit but oh well. (;

  • I was Peggy Bundy last year. I'm also a big fan of dressing up as a friend/family member without them knowing. The year before last, H was our best friend and I was best friend's mom. It was hysterical.

  • I'm not too good at costumes. Kids ones? Yes all over it but for H and I, I struggle. We were 80 fitness instructors one year. Last year we were egyptians. I don't like being specific characters unless those characters are brown. I know rhat is probably bad but otherwise it's hard to recognize and a costume is no fun if there is a lot of explaining involved.

Totally agree with the bolded! Even things you think would be obvious, people don't always get. My mom and I went to Vegas a few years ago for Halloween. I didn't feel comfortable donning a super sexy costume, so I did the Tom Cruise Risky Business costume--white button down, boxers (couldn't bring myself to just do underwear), white socks, and Ray Bans.

I've never seen Risky Business, but I've at least seen that part of the movie, and so I figured people would get it. I spent most of the night explaining what I was supposed to be. For reference:

  • One year I went as zombie Marie Antoinette. That was awesome. I had to make the dress and wig myself because all they had was sexy Marie Antoinette and I was all I don't want to be sexy I want to be scary. I didn't really "make" the wig. I repurposed it. I took a normal Antoinette wig and added dirt and fake bugs and stuff to it. I had these really cool fake stitches all around my neck. H managed to find me a zombie cake. So I went around all night in my horrible fake French accent saying "let them eat cake".
  • Last year I was Marshall Eriksen and Fi was Lily.  I wore all Columbia gear with a Vikings hat (the kind with huge horns on it).  We made Fi a shirt with purple paint handprints and he got a red wig and paintbrushes to carry around.  Then he was embarrassed about the wig-- he said it made his face look fat, I kid you not.  So by the time we went out, I just looked like a Vikings fan and Fi looked like he lost a battle with a fingerpainting child.  Fail.

We need ideas for this year.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • My favorite was when H and I went as the Sun Drop girl and boy from the commercials. It was so much fun and everyone seemed to really love it! It was very easy to do and cheap as well.
  • We're thinking of making our Halloween party 90's themed, so I want to go as Kelly Kapowski and Zach Morris from SBTB. But FI wants to be "Jake, from State Farm." Not 90's, bro. And not clever, your name is Jake. And I couldn't just roll with it and be Flo from Progressive because a friend has been her already.

  • My most successful costume was "Not a Happy Camper".  I purchased from ebay a camp shirt and took an old pair of cargo shorts.  I cut holes in the cargo shorts and set the butt on fire.  I put holes in the camp shirt and rubbed it in some dirt.  I had crazy hair with a stick in it.  Then took an old pair of sneakers, dirtied them up and fired up a marshmellow, then stuck it on my shoe.  People did need to ask me who I was, but as soon as I said I was "Not a Happy Camper", they got it.

I love the double dare idea!

  • H and I have never done a couples costume. We always have such different ideas that we just run with it and do our own thing. I can't decide what I'm going to do this year. I was kind of thinking as going as the other mother from Coraline.
  • A couple years ago FI and I went as Heisenberg (him) and Jesse Pinkman (me).

We still have the baggy of fake meth stuck to our fridge - I'm not sure what the prospective renters thought when they toured our suite :P.

Probably my favourite costume was Cat Woman (grade 1, I think). My dad made me this amazing mask modeled after the one Michelle Pfeiffer wore.

  • DH is going to be Murder Bear a la venture bros. I really want to do Dr. Mrs. The Monarch when I'm back in shape for it. Im debating doing an older arya stark
  • Two years ago H & I went to our friend's party as Wesley and Buttercup from the Princess Bride. I am not sure if any of our friends are doing Halloween parties this year, there has been an explosion of babies, if so H & I want to do something from the Hunger Games.

  • We're going as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo this year. I found an awesome dress online a while back and FI wants an excuse to grow his hair longer. Our names are very similar and I have red hair so we get teased about it a lot anyway.

Based on your siggy, what about going as one of the OITNB inmates and FI could go as a prison guard?

  • FI and I have never done one together. He is not the costume type at all so he just wears his beard (real) and hockey jersey every year.

I have done- slutty schoolgirl, slutty patriots player, slutty beer wench (it was college and I was single)

Older and in relationship- 80's aerobics lady- super easy. Lisa Simpson- found red dress at forever 21 for like $5 and blow up saxophone. Pageant loser- wore my bridesmaid gown from my brother's wedding and I made a sash that said "runner up" and put makeup down my face like I was crying. Oreos & Milk- I cut the top and bottom off a cardboard box and wore it as you would wear a tube dress. I had a tank top and shorts underneath, and decorated the box to be an Oreo box. Made my guy friend at the time a cardboard cutout of a milk gallon to wear around his neck.

  • A few years ago I dressed up as a margarita and my BFF as a martini. That was fun :)
