House-hunting (AW/PIP)

Most of you know that H and I are looking to buy our first home. I mentioned this house in @allusive's thread and she asked to see pictures so here they are!

We looked at this one a week or so ago and H fell even more in love with it but I fell a little bit out of love with it. My main draw is that it's a little big for us. After discussing it in depth with H and hearing his thoughts on all of the space, I'm totally in love with the house again! We've driven around the neighborhood a few times and it's adorable and right near the train station. The commute to work wouldn't be any worse for H and it would only add about 10 minutes to my current commute.

I absolutely LOVE the porch.

Also, the entryway and those doors going into the living room. You can't see the stairs but I'm in love with them too.

There's also a formal dining room and the kitchen is on the 1st floor. I hate the kitchen and that'll be the first thing we tackle if we buy it. There's no oven and the entire space is just set up really strangely.

On the 2nd floor is the master bedroom and master bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub (!!!) and large stand up shower and also a guest bedroom and full bath:

On the third floor, there's 3 additional rooms including a giant (and weird) walk in closet. H and I decided we would make the smallest of the 3 rooms a storage area and turn the other 2 rooms into 1 big room which would be another guest room and H would keep all of his sports things in there. Although, if I get my way, the entire 3rd floor will become a cat sanctuary for me to house the 27 cats I would like to have.

There's also a full finished basement which is currently a music studio. H and I aren't musically inclined, though, so we would like to make this space a movie room. There's a half bath down there and a separate laundry area, too.

And there's a lovely backyard for Lucy to run around in, a small deck, a driveway and a shed.

Our realtor is working to get answers to a list of questions we have and depending on what happens there, I think we're going to put in an offer.

Also, H found out this morning that he's getting a 5.5% raise AND a bonus! He already agreed that the bonus can go straight to fixing up the kitchen in this house if it ends up being ours hahaha. Today is a good day :)

  • @Swazzle - OK I haven't READ this all yet and I'm about to dash into a meeting - but I just have to say I LOVE WHAT I AM SEEING!
  • @GoldenPenguin I love that house it's adorable.  I love the kitchen island.

  • I am totally jealous of your oven!

    And your pool.

    And your fireplace.

  • @Blue I love the house, so jealous of the pool.  I really wanted a house with a pool but we both kinda admitted we were too lazy to deal with the upkeep.

    Anniversary

  • @peaseblossom55 we totally would not have gotten a pool if we weren't in FL - but really, out of all the houses in FL we looked at, I think only one didn't have a pool.  It's almost a requirement down in these parts.  And H uses it like almost daily.  I'm in charge of the chemicals though, so you know it's good haha

@swazzle you will have all the awesome house things so soon!!  And really, for some reason, my H doesn't like the fireplace.  He wants to take down the stone and put up more modern looking stone (he knows what it's called) and probably make it smaller.  I personally don't really have big dreams for the fireplace, but I AM SO STOKED that we can hang our stockings on there once we get a mantle.  I don't even care if we don't have kids yet - stockings need to be on the mantle so Santa can fill them.  Duh.

  • Yes if we were in FL I probably would have pushed for the pool @blue & White

@Swazzle - So nice! I love the porch and my FI would kill for that basement studio! I on the other hand would want a theatre. Perhaps we need to find a house with 2 basements...

@GoldenPenguin - Weird bathroom closets not withstanding [ ;) ] it looks really nice! I love the yard and the pool; FI's family has Trex decking and they love it...it's probably 8 - 10 years old and doesn't look at all worn.

@Blue & White - I want your skylights and yard please. And also to live in FL so I will have no more shitty Canadian winter.

I have no fun house to AW yet. I'm still peeved about not going for the last house we liked, and our realtor is going away for a couple weeks so we're taking a break from searching. Sounds like FI wants to change our search criteria AGAIN and look for a house that needs work (he is referring to them as "Property Brothers" houses, but I'm calling them ugly houses). I fully understand his rationale, that we can get a bigger/detached house instead of a townhouse, and that his family's construction company can get whatever work we need done for a low cost, but I am NOT looking forward to owning a construction zone.

i would so do this! you are lucky to have family to be able to do it for cheaper. just think, you can customize things to your taste.

  • @lmcooper86 there's a difference between a house with mold and holes in the walls and a house that "needs work". It sounds like your FI's version of "needs work" has holes and mold, lol. That's not okay. We wanted a house with good bones that we could live with until we had the funds and time to fix things we wanted to fix. What that means is I'm likely to have at least 2 years with a brown toilet :)

  • @Blue&White We can't invite Cinders ( @LaPeanut1018 's dog) because she is a serial killer and will kill all the baby bunnies and things we come across.
  • @southernpeach89 given that my house recently had fleas, I wouldn't recommend bringing dogs within 1000 feet either, haha. fleas are the devil.

  • @lavenderfields - Yes, it would be great if we could customize things that are important to us and definitely great that his family's company will be able to do work on any house we get, but it's a bit intimidating to think about taking on major work with our first house. We'll see.

@Blue & White - I'm not sure how much of a fixer upper he's looking for, and I think that's where my worries are coming from. I have no interest in mold or walls that are falling apart! I was too crusty to talk about it yesterday when he brought it up, and we had a family dinner to go to last night, so we haven't had a more in depth talk about what he has in mind. I wrote out a full page of concerns and questions I have about this idea, so we will be having a very serious discussion about it tonight or tomorrow. Our realtor had a personal emergency come up this week (she's a friend of ours/his family, so we know what's going on and we don't want to pull her away from that) and she's away for the next 2 weeks, so we have lots of time to figure out what we're really looking for before we go into our next round of house shopping.

Hid dad floated this idea. He said he didn't want to shoot down the house that we liked and not offer any alternatives (yeah, thanks...I'm still annoyed), so he apparently did some looking and thinks that this is a great idea. I don't know what exactly he think he found online, because my search didn't turn up anything appealing. I want us to talk about it JUST US, and come to an agreement on the things that are important to US. I understand that he values and respects his dad's opinion, and I'm certainly fine with his parents and mine giving their input on what THEY think is important in a house, but at the end of the day it's going to he OUR house and OUR money, so OUR opinions and wants are the ones that matter most. I'll give his parents a chance to put in their two cents, but after that I don't want to hear any more complains about the size of the backyard or the proximity of grocery stores. /end rant. and /end CAPS.

Enough of my ranting, I want to hear more about potential new houses!
