New Orleans vs. Las Vegas?

My fiance and I have decided to stay in the US for our honeymoon and we are torn between New Orleans and Las Vegas. I've been looking online and requesting visitor's guides but I thought I'd ask TK folks for opinions. If you have been to either and/or both we'd love your opinion(s) and/or suggestions on the pro's and con's of each plus fun things to do, etc, etc. We'd be going in mid-May 2015.

Re: New Orleans vs. Las Vegas?

  • New Orleans is an awesome city. Great food, great music. Lots of cool history. I'd choose it over Vegas any day.
  • They're very different. I don't see Vegas as a romantic honeymoon spot at all. Can it be? Sure...but New Orleans is amazing. I've been there twice and I'm headed back in October. Great restaurants, beautiful things to see and so much history.
  • Definitely New Orleans. More unique, regional food, architecture and culture. And way more romantic.
  • While Vegas is a lot of fun, I don't think it's very romantic.  New Orleans is beautiful.  It is just an amazing city.  New Orleans has great night life but also very romantic.
  • Well depending the atmosphere you are looking for I'd say New Orleans. It is so amazing, food from Napoleon House, Yo Mama's, Court of 2 Sisters for brunch  There is NOTHING like it I've ever seen in the US.  Vegas is fantastic, which is where my wedding will be in 23 days, but it's not really considered romantic in my opinion, incredible nightlife and shopping .  New Orleans has the street cars, and Jackson Square stole my heart.  Tons of super cool art.  And Magazine street is amust do.  Clearly, love New Orleans!  Oh and Coopers to eat.  Do your research, yelp has tons of reviews and they do not lie! Vegas is amazing for the giant big city life feel, but not romantic really.

  • Stay off Beale Street in New Orleans for the most part, there is much more to the city than the neon lights of Beale :)
  • I would do New Orleans, the cultural experience would be amazing, plus I hear they have some pretty amazing food.

Personally, I'm a fan of Vegas. But it depends on what you want to do and the experience you are looking for. We enjoy gambling, but it really is more an individual activity, and gets old (and expensive) after a while. They have some awesome shows and restaurants. Freemont Street is fun to do once or twice. If you've never been to Vegas, just walking down the strip and looking at all the hotel designs is awesome. It's hard to look past the lights of the casinos and find other activities to do there, but can definitely be worth it. I would suggest some of the day trips, like to Lake Mead or Grand Canyon, to do some more fun activities together outside of casinos.

We had our wedding in NOLA, first time either of us were there, and weren't super impressed. NOLA is nice when you get outside of the French Quarter. But, we found the FQ area to just be dirty and smelly, especially at night. DH really spent all his time there near FQ and absolutely hated NOLA. I was there a few days before DH was, so I had more time to do sightseeing in Garden District, Metairie and others areas outside of FQ, so I had a better experience. Being interested in history and architecture, I had really looked forward to the trip, but was kind of disappointed with it. I had a good time, and some of the things there are definitely awesome and worth seeing, but I wouldn't be upset if I don't go back.

I know someone that worked there for years. The food is great.
  • New Orleans is awesome! Cant wait to go back.
  • Mid-May can be great weather....or full on blistering in Vegas. I would go New Orleans.
  • Depends.  New Orleans is definitely the more unique city, great food too so you can eat high-quality all trip if that's important to you.  However, if ultra-luxury pampering is supposed to be a part of your honeymoon (high-end spas and golf and pool pampering and trendy dining/bars type of thing), Vegas is definitely the better bet.  That's the only occasion where I'd say Vegas over New Orleans.  If you're looking for a mix of high-end to casual experiences, or just a casual experience overall, New Orleans by a mile but research what neighborhoods you're staying in ahead of time and how you'll be getting around, just like any city.
  • Both have their unique qualities.  New Orleans is lively and has some great restaurants and shopping.  Las Vegas has beautiful hotels, fun casinos, many restaurants, and excellent nightlife.

Personally, I'd go for Las Vegas.  Regarding hotels, I stayed at Paris Las Vegas, but I've heard many good things about The Cosmopolitan, and it's beautiful on the inside.  Here's a picture of The Chandelier, a bar that's right in the casino.
