Shoes: Pretty or comfortable?!

What did you decide? Did you get the cute shoes or comfy? I am TORN. These shoes are perfect for my dress... but they are 4 inches tall! I can handle heels, but 4 inches on my wedding day has me worried. Any adivce?

Re: Shoes: Pretty or comfortable?!

  • I had both.  I wore pretty and uncomfortable shoes for the ceremony and then changed into not so cute and comfortable wedged flip flops for the reception.  Looking back I wish I had just worn the wedges the entire time because unless I picked my dress up no one saw my shoes.

  • A little of both. I have wedges with an ankle strap for the ceremony because it's outside, but I had already bought awesome turquoise pumps so I'll wear those for pictures/reception. The pumps are half size too big so I put insoles and a heel liner in them to make them a bit more comfortable and secure on my foot. If I get sick of being in heels though I'll just go barefoot. :)

Same.  I wore gorgeous heels for the ceremony and then changed into wedges for the reception.

And then at some point int he night, I ended up barefoot.  As is the norm for me.

  • I wore a pair of PP's that were comfy. I did change into wedge foam sandals towards the end cause my shoes were rubbing. I should have left the pumps on cause the foam wedges were worse.

  • Comfy!  But only because I'm glittering the ever-loving crap out of them to make them pretty.  I just picked flats that feel good in the arch, and won't slip off my heels when I'm dancing.

  • I would prefer a cute pair of flats or sandals.  No one is really going to see my shoes anyways, and I want to be comfortable.

  • I have a pair of platform heels that are actually really comfortable.  I'm also getting a pair of cute flats that I can change into as the night goes on.  We are getting married in Vegas, so I expect that we will be out partying most of the night, so I will likely need to change them at some point.  I'm sort of torn on what flat shoes to get though.
  • Maybe I will get these wedges link instead. I think I can make the whole night with these and they are pretty still!

Thank you everyone for your comments!
  • Go comfy. I was a BM in a wedding recently and the bride had these GORGEOUS designer heels but was literally miserable in them. She ripped them off and wore flip flops as soon as she was done taking photos. I'm guessing you don't want that.
  • It really pained me to go with comfort over height. I love tall heels! But I also love kicking them off after a few hours when my feet are killing me. The thought of my beautiful wedding dress dragging on the ground if I have to change into flipflops or barefeet kills me. So I settled on 3.5" Betsy Johnsons. They are really comfortable, even if I will look like an oompa loompa next to my 6'4 FI.
  • I went for looks, but not completely uncomfortable.  I wear heels  most days and def have had plenty of nights out in uncomfortable shoes so I figure I could deal with it.    I made it almost the whole night, although my feet were getting very sore.  I had flip flops somewhere but had no idea where my overnight bag had gone.  I finally couldn't take it anymore and took off the shoes and sent my mom on search of my flip flops :)
  • I am considering getting a pair of designer leather flats to change into. My dress is short, so I won't have to worry about it dragging on the floor. Both pairs of shoes that I have/will get, I want to be able to wear more than just one night, so that was and is one of my focuses.
  • I went comfy and do the regret it. If your dress is floor length, no one will see your shoes.
  • I got wedges, but they are 4 inches, which is REALLY high for me so I'll probably ditch them after pictures and switch to platform flip-flops.

  • I had to ask SIL what her shoes looked like because I never saw them. Go for comfort.
  • Neither.  Keep shopping for a pair that is pretty and comfortable.  I ended up choosing a metallic wedge with horse bits on the toes for my wedding at a horse estate.  I wore them all day and night, no problems.  There is a shoe out there that is right.
  • I'm all for pretty! Since you can handle heels I think you'll be okay for the majority of the day. Maybe get some cheap low heels for dancing.
  • I think you can have both, but if you find you cannot then go for comfy. No one looks at your shoes, really.

PS - I do love the pair you linked, but four inches is a little to cray-cray for me.

  • It's totally possible to find shoes that are both.

That said, I don't remember what shoes any bride wore at her wedding, mostly because you don't notice them under a long dress.  And who's staring at your shoes anyway?

Mine are pretty, but 2 3/4 inch heels.  It was either that, or 4, and at 4 it's a real gamble.  I wore 4 inch heels when I was BM in another wedding (mostly because I had one day to buy a pair of shoes - travel related issues - and those were the most suitable pair I found).  I ended up wanting to take them off by the reception.  But of course, in Australia - the land of over regulation - you're not allowed to be barefoot in a venue that uses glassware.  I guess my sister didn't think that plastic cups were classy enough.

  • It's definitely possible to get both! I found a pair of 3 1/2 inch heels I was pretty happy with and I should be comfortable all night in. 4 inches is a little too much for me...Just keep looking around! You don't have to compromise pretty for comfy unless you really just can't find something that fills both needs for you. I find that tall heels that have some sort of platform at your toes tend to be a little more comfortable to wear for a long period of time than heels that have no platform.

  • I was seriously considering getting a pair of wildly expensive stilettos and calling it good for shoes. Then I thought about it more and realized, nobody is going to see my damn shoes.

I'm going to be wearing a long dress and I want to get my groove on, so I'm going to wear a pair of cute 4" wedges I already own. Might paint the soles dark blue. That's it.

  • You should be able to find something pretty AND comfortable if you try. But I'd definitely set some comfort requirements, and then find the prettiest shoe that meets them. I wear heels regularly, but I wanted a low heel for the wedding because my groom isn't too tall and I didn't want to tower over him. I also have wide feet, and not too many shoes come in a wide! I ended up buying these: http://a9.zassets.com/images/z/2/8/2/7/8/4/2827844-p-MULTIVIEW.jpg. The heel is only like 2 inches, and they fit well. I also have a "back up" pair of ivory wedge sandals I wore as a wedding guest a couple months ago that were fine all night, in case these unexpectedly start hurting. For me, it's not just about the fact that no one will see the shoes, it's about how I feel overall in the outfit, and the shoes are a part of that.
  • I went with these:

But I'm going to have flip flops with me as a backup plan just in case!!!

I wanted something I would wear again.

  • I wear uncomfortable shoes all the time, so I bought mine based on looks. I did compromise a bit and get them half a size too big so I can put some comfortable insoles in them though, which is a route I totally recommend if you're more into form than function like I am with shoes.

  • I spent a bit more money and found a pair that are pretty & comfy.  I am typically not a heel person, but I wanted height for my wedding (DH is 1' taller than me). But, I also refused to sacrifice comfort since I knew I would be on my feet all day and didn't want to be miserable with sore feet on my wedding day. I found a pair of designer 4" heels that I loved (blue snake skin print) at an outlet store.  Normally about $500, but on sale for $180!  My cheap 1.5" heels hurt after too long, but I can wear these 4" ones all day with minimal pain. And they look great to dress up blue jeans and work with other dresses I own, so they are now my standard "dress up" shoes.

I really wanted a pair of Jimmy Choo's, since my research showed that they are the most comfy heels you can buy, but they didn't have any I really loved in my budget.  They do have a lot of them for sale online, often women selling their wedding shoes, for decent prices. And outlet stores are awesome for finding good deals on designer shoes.  And if you don't have outlet stores near you, many of them do have websites where you can buy cheap.

  • Go for comfort. You can always jazz up a pair of simple comfortable shoes with some great shoe clips (see etsy for some fun options from blind to bows to feathers).

I'm did the same, I took a pair of super comfy slingbacks with a kitten heel and glittered the crap out of them.
