DUGGARS!!

Re: DUGGARS!!

  • What's blanket training??! I'm curious!
Blanket training is where you basically teach your infant to stay on a blanket - by smacking them every time they try to crawl off. After enough smacking they'll never try to crawl off the blanket again and then wherever the parent puts the blanket the kid will stay there.

I grew up around families that did this (actually my upbringing was really similar to the Duggars...I'm really glad I figured out it was all wrong and got out) and it's no way to treat a child. The way I look at it, it's no different than putting a shock collar on a dog and training it not to leave your yard. Children obviously aren't dogs so you really shouldn't treat them that way. Blanket training also punishes a child's natural curiosity and makes them timid - really not something you want to do to your kid before the poor thing can even walk or talk.

    Ugh, it pisses me off.
I looked this up on Wikipedia and thought it doesn't sound so bad, it just sounded like the kid was taught to stay on the blanket, so similar to a playpen. The smacking part was left out on Wikipedia. This is so awful.

  • It's all part of the Train Up a Child system of parenting.

Which has been behind several horrible child abuse cases and deaths. If you ever thought to yourself "How do I raise my children with systematic abuse and neglect but protect myself under the blanket of religious freedom?"  well, this is the system for you!

Some of the suggestions in this parenting style include.

"fasting" for picky eaters, depriving them of food and then feeding them nothing but the food they don't like.

spraying children who are slow to pick up potty training with a hose.

Hitting your children with flexible plastic plumbing tubes.

There are large portions of the book and website dedicated to the importance of a switch, and what makes a good one. Even young babies are encouraged to have their reaching hands hit with switches.
  • Oh my lord all of this sounds awful! Gah!

  • Well, the married male spawn is now working for what I'd consider a hate group - National Research Council - and the cult hasn't disowned him, so I refuse to watch anything with them.

Granted, my meeting with them years ago was psycho evil nasty people. Ick. I'd rather deal with the Westboro crazies.

Do you mean Family Research Council? Googled the NRC and it looks legit (I have never heard of them), but NRC + hate group shows up FRC.

*I don't watch the Duggars, cause they be craycray, so IDK which son works for which company.

  • I think it's cute how some of you think that the girls being married off are suddenly going to know what being unsupervised is.

Do you really think Jimbob would approve of a husband who isn't going to rule over his daughters the way he has? Do you think a man who wants to marry into that family isn't in love with their fucked-up practices that make the man the most important person?

Well  Derrick does go to work (accountant at Wal-Mart).  I'm assuming Jill is left at home by herself once in a while.   Unless I guess if one of her sisters is required to "visit"  or she is required to go back to her house while he is at work

Anna and Josh moved away from both families.   I'm sure she goes to the store and stuff without Josh.  They have filmed her driving by herself.  But then again, the film crew could be considered accountability partners.  Or even the kids for that matter.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
